heymisterk Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Hi All, and happy Thankgiving, I'm in the market for my first Les Paul Standard, being that I like my SG Classic so much. In shopping online, I've noticed that that so-called "faded" models - at least online - look just as good, and seem to have the same hardware. So, my question is, why are they cheaper than the "non-faded" Standards? Many Thanks!
Ian Martin Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Because they're made in China and the neck is set with poop instead of glue.
AXE® Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Less Nitro-less Polish-less labor intensive-less pickup covers- Les Paul.
heymisterk Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 Because they're made in China and the neck is set with poop instead of glue. Uh...the ones I've seen have "Made in the USA" stamped on the headstock...
nikko18 Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 he is just kidding XD haha necks set with poop. check out the second response thats probably why. in my opinion the faded ones look even better, thats why i faded mine down.
AXE® Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Because they're made in China and the neck is set with poop instead of glue. Damnit Ian .... lulz
Ian Martin Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 what are faded women easier? Why? Because their illustrious factory shine wore off years ago, now they're stuck with 5 kids, no husband, and a crack habit.
Riffster Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Hi All' date=' and happy Thankgiving, I'm in the market for my first Les Paul Standard, being that I like my SG Classic so much. In shopping online, I've noticed that that so-called "faded" models - at least online - look just as good, and seem to have the same hardware. So, my question is, why are they cheaper than the "non-faded" Standards? Many Thanks![/quote'] The fadeds have less coats of nitro, I think standards have about double the coats. Less work to apply the coats and wait in between and also less curing time so you can move them out of the factory faster. The maple top is also (generally speaking)less pretty than the top on a standard. The more flame on the maple the more expensive the guitar.
Thundergod Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The maple top is also (generally speaking)less pretty than the top on a standard. The more flame on the maple the more expensive the guitar. ...not on this beauty...
ninety1vee Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 what kind of pups you got in that LP fingers?
Thundergod Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Here's mine. Now that's a beauty! pecially this one pic' date=' you can really see the flame there:
Tim Plains Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 So' date=' my question is, why are they cheaper than the "non-faded" Standards?[/quote']It's because they're second rate guitars.
Slogold Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Damn.....I Don't have mine anymore. They are really sweet lookin sweet soundin Guits. Here's a pic of her from my photobucket. Now this is what I have.
Ian Martin Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 WOW guys! Beautiful Fadeds! I wish my Standard had an awesome Foto Flame like that!!! Epiphone quality right thar!!! ;-P
cob666 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I have a faded also. Went into GC to buy a new Classic '60, played about 10 different Pauls that day and ended up getting the faded. I really liked that the pickups didn't feel as hot as the pups in the Classic. Comment on the time spent on the finish: at the store I noticed that there was a hair in the finish right next to the neck pup tone pot, showed it to the sales guy, he called over the manager and they knocked a nice chunk off the already nicely negotiated price! Oh yeah, this is the same guitar that I've been having fret / binding issues with but I'm not convinced that that is related to the model of guitar.
stymye Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 is your fretboard shrinking/ if it's really dry it would shrink to some degree
stymye Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 that has a strange graph paper look to it than the typical smooth flame , may be the lighting of the photo tho. definately different!
stymye Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Here's mine. that has an almost graph paper figuring to it than the typical smooth flame that I'm used to , may be the lighting of the photo tho. definately different!
retrosurfer1959 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 i think it's just supply and demand there moving them out so the prices are low one of Gibson's best in years I love the faded finish models both look and feel That finish is pretty wild looks like you could play suduko or whatever the number graph game is on it.
Riffster Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I stand corrected then, that is a lot of flame. The ones I have seen at the store had less flame, I actually prefer less flame, too much of it reminds me of PRS. The fadeds are described as having a hand rubbed finish...no idea what that means...
cob666 Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Interesting side note on the faded finish. All the ones I've seen don't come with the pick guard attached and mine has been sitting in the case since I bought it almost 3 years ago (the pick guard, not the guitar). I took the pick guard out thinking I might finally like to install it and it is now a different color than the pickup rings - ARGGH.
AXE® Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 The fadeds are described as having a hand rubbed finish...no idea what that means... That means it isn't polished on the 32" polishing wheel....
