  1. Really KS? That's interesting. Explain further?
  2. I don't even know why SWater's set up team would put 'extra lights' on a guitar of that substance w/o a warning, and packing a complimentary set of 13's in the case in anticipation of the inevitable disappointment. It might as well have been set up with nylon classical strings as far as waking up your guitar goes. Your J will pop with mediums on even if you have to drop the tuning a step (D-D) to ease the strain on your fretting hand. I thought the recent post about a member who noticed his guitar had opened up after he had been parking it in front of his bass amp was a lesson in 'tonerite-eousness'.
  3. Ooops, there's a hole. https://reverb.com/item/17513226-gibson-l-30-pick-guard-w-mounting-bracket-1935-tiger-stripe
  4. How much cleaner is the finish under the guard? Photo? You got a lot of strumming to do.
  5. ...of course, I'd take the pick guard off.
  6. That's as perfect and beautiful as an old guitar can be. Wouldn't even cross my mind to 'refresh'. Almost as nice as this. None of my guitars are shiny pretty. I'm happy with that.
  7. Value floats with condition, Sam. I've tracked many L00/L0's, and find nearly all sellers know their stuff, so ballpark estimates run the spectrum. Repairs like neck resets, fingerboard planing/fretjobs, and other structural issues have to be investigated and asked about in detail, so you aren't surprised when you open the box. Look at the highest/best condition piece, and the so-called beater. That's the estimate range right there. I see a fret board re-surfacing on the horizon with Dave F's suggestion. Remember, you're keyed into a special version of the model, so your search is narrowed, and perhaps going to be more costly.
  8. Good luck. They're out there, but getting rarer. Ask folks here to keep an eye out for you and DM if they have a lead. I'm always window shopping, so I'll put you down on my trusty desk blotter.
  9. Here's your deals, Sam. Pony up brother. PPal gives you six months interest free. https://www.ebay.com...WYAAOSwBFtbce6O https://www.ebay.com...MAAAOSwZHpbdGRZ While the color wouldn't effect the tone, I understand why the black finish is cool. You'll have to hunt and be patient for the true black w/white P'guard. I helped a friend sell a mid-thirties beauty a couple years back, that was a well kept under the bed case queen. It sold for just under 6K. I have heard of an occasional complaint about 'dull' sounding L00/L0's, but I've played a few from the 30's and 40's, and never been disappointed. Super light weight and hefty neck are right up my alley. There are members here who play newer copies, so they'll probably chime in, but I'm a fool for old wood.
  10. Hey, I forgot you were NYS local. Do you remember the earliest version of the TCrier in the old general store in Beekman? It's moved once or twice since, but I'm talking '71-72.

    Enjoy. Dave

  11. Thar she blows! Think I got it. Selected and copied the box BBcode (message boards and forums). Duh.
  12. I'd like to check it out but that link is funky. What's it called?
  13. 'I see a pale falling down from the trees, winter is coming and it's plain to see...I spend the cold night in my lonely room, Is it the winter to which I am doomed?' That's some bad song, but I love that first GFR album.
  14. Jack Bruce wrote it. Figures a bass player would get it. Mountain was my first ever concert. Blew my mind, 1969, at the Wollman Rink in Central Park. I came home from that one a changed kid and proceeded to ruin my parent's life.
  15. I'm guessing that it was added as a means of suppressing a tone someone felt was too bright or harsh. I've seen a lot of odd materials under saddle.but intuition tells me the saddle should always be in direct contact with the soundboard.
  16. Lucinda William's, 'Six Blocks Away', Elvis Costello's, 'Girls Talk', and after hearing Taylor Swift's (by accident) nauseating cover of Tom Petty's 'American Girl', I rotated the song back to the top of my pile to tighten it up a little. Cheap Trick's 'Surrender' is easy and fun too, but as my memory weakens I'd like to work the pile into a set of 20 or so that when someone asks me to play I don't shuffle papers like I'm at a real estate closing. There are a few songs that as hard as I try I can't 'convert' into a solo mode with my limited musical abilities. The Band's 'We Can Talk' is one.
  17. Right! Either the neck is soft and the head is lifting or the belly is lifting. There aren't any other ways for the action to rise. That's a hefty instrument and probably needs a heavier string and less neck relief. If your luthier can get that truss rod back further in the stiff position you'll be less likely to have drastic action changes due to atmospheric conditions. I'd give that sucka' a 1/4 turn clockwise and play it for a while.
  18. Good luck. There are pages on pages of debate on humidifying guitars on this and other forums.
  19. Before I started guessing at humidity I would have the neck angle looked at and truss rod position finalized. I have very old acoustics, never cased (except for travel) and hanging in a room whose humidity varies with the season, though I keep them in air conditioned comfort when the real summer heat arrives to stay. In winter the house stays (I live outside of Cooperstown in upstate NY) in the 30-40% humidity range. Never have trouble with the kind of string height variations you describe. It should drop in pitch slightly if the neck is arching with the humidity, but it's a complex relationship so you should be starting at a good set up baseline first.
  20. Very cool. Thanks. Chalk me up 10,000 more hours.
  21. Honestly, unless you can touch it up with the point of a needle I fear you'll notice the touch-up more than the scratch.
  22. I've owned two over the years. Big and boxy with a tone that didn't have the depth and woody character of a J45, though they were nice in the 'Guild' sound range. I would say comparable to Goya and Takamine to my recollection. I swapped out for Gibsons and Martins.
  23. Yep...it's called a chromatic harp. Never have seen one you can flip over though.
  24. When I was a kid I had a favorite uncle who played a chromatic harmonica...very entertaining. Later, somehow, I ended up with it, and might actually still have it in a box somewhere. The moment when I really got interested in playing the harp, though, was when I saw this performance. I must have been in my twenties, and ran right out to buy a set of blues harps. Hope I have the right vid. There are other versions of this out there.
