This calls for a limerick.

Gibson mostly builds guitars that we adore
though every now and then, they get an idea for
A guitar that prompts people to sue
An ugly instrument that costs thousands new
Ladies and gentlemen, that’s the Theodore

🤨

"When Gibson builds an axe that's not fetching,

You can count on Sparquilito's kvetching,

So when they brought out this eyesore,

Aptly named the Theodore,

You just knew Sparky'd be retching."

I just couldn't help myself.

Let’s see Joe B gig one. He won’t cause he’s a vintage guitar snob cork sniffer. He will play nothing less than a guitar he payed half a mil for.

Or just put it in a case and put it goes after the QA department writes numbers on a tag.

I began to liken those to "toe tags." Remember my $7000.00 LPC BB 50th anniversary? The board binding issue? Naked eye could see that easily.

Edit,

Me thinks both are guilty of  a "post of the day" nod

@Sgt. Pepper

Even your old couch as s back drop couldn't make a Theodore look good

The ol’ couch would have rejected it for sure (and it’s seen plenty of Sarge’s butt!)[laugh]

It’s like Ovation and Parker we’re having an offsite weekend for their design teams and our hosts raided the wastepaper bin.

If I were Rodney Dangerfield, I’d be asking if you get a free bowl of soup with that guitar

No you don’t. You get the pleasure of owning one ugly guitar that Gibson would later built that looks quite similar.

Maybe a free hair cut at Supercuts. Short back and sides.

Edit/repost,

I've no idea how quoting Sarge came out tagged as my quote.

AN ODE TO THE THEODORE

(a poem)

They say there is someone out there for everyone under the sun
A soulmate for each and every one of us
That person may be plain and drab, or their looks might positively stun
But we need not be alone when the Lord comes to summon us

A man may be a gnome, and a woman quite a harridan
And they both might not be the best looking
So, what if they are united by some good Samaritan
And she loves his wit, and he loves her cooking?

They can be happy together, happy as two clams
It could be the best relationship ever
He makes her laugh as she bakes candied yams
and there could be no disagreements whatsoever

So, stick with me here, I'm finally getting to the point
Don't get impatient, and move onto some other thread
It's just that 'ugly' and 'pretty' are a matter of viewpoint
And one man's stale pizza crust is another man's bread

What if even a hundred people love the Theodore?
What if they find it most fetching?
Sure McCarty wasn't a hero in the Korean War
But we got the Explorer, Flying V, and SG from his sketching

So what if he sketched a real stinker
And envisioned a real turd of a guitar?
Perhaps I'm just being a wishful thinker
But somebody out there eats haggis, and millions love NASCAR

The Theodore could end up being a cult classic
I guess that's what I'm steadily saying
The velociraptor wasn't popular back in the Jurassic
But in modern film they are preying and slaying

This ugly Gibson just might be the next big thing
In 15 years everybody might want one
It could be the most desirable object with six strings
and be more popular than cheese in Wisconsin

So let's reserve judgement and try to be fair
Let's cool our jets, Herr Kommisar und Lionel Barrymore
Because years from now when our grandkids have grey hair
Everybody might be going mad for an old Theodore

I'm gonna shut up now.

Sparquelito,

Unlike you, I can't write Epic Poems, as my attention span is far too short.  So I'll just stick to the Limerick ('cause they're short and quick):

There once was a man from Kentucky,

who one day tried to get lucky,

He built an ax,

So ugly it distrax,

That even Gibsonsters think it's just kucky.

Thankyouverymuch.

The design drawing of the Theodore was dated March, 1957. Teisco didn't release those until the 60s.

There was a production model 'Tulip' Rickenbacker in 1957,  Maybe that was what Ted sketched?

I always thought Rick’s were overrated. I’ve watched a setup on the basses and it’s a different beast compared to “regular” guitars in general. No thank you… Just as tulips belong in the ground only showing up briefly every spring, I hope this one never blooms

I wasn't expounding the virtues of Rickenbackers here (I could do. I have two 650s).

I was making the point that this sketch from 1957 was not very original due to the Tulip already being in production.

Yeah, but apparently Gibson kept this secret drawing made on a napkin and locked it away in the vault until they made them a few years back. How did Tiesco get their secret design? A man on the inside, guitar espionage? Nope. Answer - they didn’t. Even I have seen Tulips before. Just some company making a design they thought was a hit. Nope on that too. Maybe they are selling like hot cakes in Holland.

Okay people we need a new guitar design to compete with F & G. Any ideas?

How about a dumb pointy one that looks like flower? I think we have a new head of design with a big promotion. Call the wife and tell her to defrost that pot roast, no TV dinner for you tonight.

Agreed the resemblance is striking… people like what they like and they can say good or bad as well. I know you haven’t taken offense or anything to what I said and I wouldn’t take offense if someone said something about what I like. It’s just after I learned about Ricks wrt how they are set up and such, I have been deterred from wanting anything to do with them. I don’t care for the bridge design nor the 2 truss rod scheme to be specific.

Looks like the Theo custom has been discontinued. The regular version is still on the website, and it’s about the cheapest humbuckered Gibson you can get so jump in quick if that’s your kink!

I wouldn’t even take a picture of it on the old gold couch. It’s that’s ugly. I think the custom shop ones were a limited run and not meant as production guitars till now.

My kink are The Kinks. From about ‘67 -‘79 they made very few bad albums. Most are so damn good. The theatrical era gets slagged on, but there was great stuff on those albums. Once Give The People What They Want came out, Ray mysteriously lost the plot, and the albums they made till the breakup are unlistenable to me. Come Dancing was their last hurrah. Cheesy Caribbean riff anyone?

I picked up a cassette compilation album decades ago…not sure I’ve ever listed to it. I’ll check them out on Spotify sometime. I was in a covers band that often opened with a version of Well Respected Man but I could probably only name 4 of their other songs with any confidence.

Something Else, Village Green, Arthur (it even has a song called Australia on it, Lola Vs Powerman, and Muswell Hillbillies are great albums. Sleepwalker and Misfits are really good too. Dont bother with anything after Low Budget.
