surfpup
...another reason to belong to this forum. Not only can you get excellent guitar related information, but we have members here with a variety of talents. Let's say for example, your son needed to make a medieval sword replica for school. How big should it be? Tip shape? Cross guard size? Well, I hit resident medieval reenactment specialist ChanMan with a PM and we had what we needed in a few minutes. Yet, another reason to love this place! BTW, here's the result - thanks again, ChanMan!

ChanMan
You don't know the half of it... I referenced Ewart Oakeshott's work, as it is recognized as one of the most comprehensive studies done on medieval swords. Check out type Xa: photo borrowed from EJMas.com: http://www.ejmas.com Very impressive work sir. Very.
surfpup
Cool - had we thinned out the "handle" part (I'm sure that's not the right term) we would've looked a lot like the Xa sword. The other thing limiting us was the humble 1x2 which doesn't leave much room for taper. I notice the examples are all a lot wider at the cross guard than at the tip. Still, I'm happy with the result. If there are any dragons in the neighborhood they had better watch out!
ChanMan
I dunno man... I think you pretty well nailed it. That is a fine reproduction given the information you had. The dimensions I gave you were from the type X sword.... he classified several types ( X-XXII). Lots of leeway in how to make it and you got it pretty dead on. Again... really well done! ChanMan
Pleeeeease don't get us interested on another hobby now...! We barely have the time for guitar playing and lurking at the forum...! Nice work guys! Everyone involved that is! Making wooden swords or fighting with them ? It's a very cool hobby' date=' but admittedly not for everyone. It takes up loads of your time with armour building, polishing and repair. You'll need to fight weekly to maintain any kind of skill level, and you will carry bruises almost constantly. You will be forced to drink home brewed beer with an AC of over 9%, eat food cooked from medieval recipes, spend weekends away from technology watching scantily clad girls dance around campfires to the beat of drums you may or may not be playing. It sucks. I wouldn't do it....
Hector Arcadius
All hobbies boil down to one thing that you fail to mention: Do chicks find you sexy when you say you're dealing with it...? That's the million-dollar question here! (the camp fire part was... interesting!) LOL!!!
