MrZeeEpi
Okay I'm probably missing something here, but I can´t figure out how to use the new Epi straplocks that come with the LP EX prohecy. If attach my (leather) strap to the thingy on the guitar the straplock cannot be slid over it without using a hamer or something, because of the thickness of the strap. And I can't figure out a way to put the lock on first without it just falling off again... it can (in my view) only be firmly attached to the strap (with a crew-on nut and a ring). Or is my strap too thick? its... well regular leather thickness. I must be overlooking something... this should be straightforward right? Can't find a manual on them either.... Does anyone know how to use them? (Or an instruction .pdf) Thanks!
jcwillow777
I'm not sure what kind of strap locks came with it. I like to use Dunlops. I bought a strap a while ago, brought it home and the same thing. I couldn't get the strap locks on because the strap was too thick. I took the strap back and got a different one. Voila - no problem.
pohatu771
I use Fender/Schaller straplocks, and I've had more trouble with strap holes being too small. I have one Fender strap where I actually shaved the hole to be bigger. It was a $5 strap, but it had thick ends so I'm still confident in its guitar-holding abilities. They fit fine on the Gibson USA strap I use for my Casino. I need to buy some gold straplocks for my newer Strat.
mealz1281734035
I use Fender/Schaller straplocks' date=' and I've had more trouble with strap holes being too small.[/quote'] Yea I use Scaller straplocks too and have experience the same problem! In the end i somehow got the strap onto it without doing anything to it, hasnt caused any problems yet...My strap was also a bit thick, but once i got it on i tighted it as much as i could with a spanner...havent had to tighten them since! TheX
Schaller's here too...same problem but they work so well that it's worth the trouble getting the strap to work with them.
TWANG
I use dunlops and can't help with the epis.. never saw them! They go on any strap I've found so far. I use thick leather. I've also tried Q parts.. and here's a little warning. some of the designs are sharp looking.. like firewheel.. but they break. if you get Q parts straplocks, get the ones like western or the plain chrome which is solid and not cut into a design.. it's etched instead.. and they wont break. the part I'm talking about is the cosmetic washer on the outside of the strap.. the strap pulls against the washer and since it has designs carved through it. holes.. it bends and then breaks. alfsboy
just get two bottles of Grolsch and use the red stopper washer to stretch over your ordinary strap buttons,It works a treat,
MrZeeEpi
Thanks I'll use that Grolsch tip on my other epi ;) I worked out how to fit the Epi locks. If anyone's interested I'll post a picture.
Biff
Works like a charm. Old picture, Schallers on all Epis but still no strap locks other than the Grolsch rings in my Strat yet.
bear222
I mentioned this method once before and it's really dumb, but it works!! Go buy a bag of hot dog buns, remove the little plastic tab that closes the bag [ It is a little plastic square with a heart shaped cutout in the center ] Now slip this little unit over your strap button after you put your strap on. It holds!!!;)/
Dave
I have the schallers on my Epi. The guitar won't fit into the case with the strap on so I need something removeable. I did have to put a drop of lok-tite on the threads of the Schallers because the nuts kept loosening up on the leather. There's also a plastic lock I bought once that was dirt cheap but worked well. It was two plastic discs made together that rotated to close two oval shaped holes down to a circle that locked around the strap peg. If I could find them again, that's what I would use. They were cheap, effective, and lasted forever. I still have one set on my Strat that are over twenty years old.
Ricochet
no strap locks other than the Grolsch rings in my Strat yet. Is that a Grolsch Limited Edition? I thought they were only available in orange?
tvyellow
Those plastic strap locks are made by Dunlop, I found them at St. John's Music
rythmking24
Thanks I'll use that Grolsch tip on my other epi I worked out how to fit the Epi locks. If anyone's interested I'll post a picture. Hello, Erm, yeah, I'm having the same problem as you were. Could you please explain how you managed to get them securely attached? And are they secure? Cheers. wardog
i have the epi straplocks. unlike the schallers or dunlap, the clearance of the threaded part is not very deep. i had to work it down with a nifty tool i use from stemac to tight all the nuts onto bolts. pliers will work find. i basically tighted as much as i could and waited a day or so to allow the leather grain to compress. Then tighted some more. as for how they go on. strap button slides into the carved out groove of the straplock and then snaps into the groove. Warning the little half moon clip the snap onto the narrowest part of the strap button is prone to break. better off keeping the epi straplocks as a paper weight and getting a better brand. Nattsvart
I use Dunlop straplocks on one epiphone and one fender. Not without problems.... First, on my thick Fender leather strap, the strap part was really hard to fit. It was just too thick leather and I ended up having to hammer it faltter with a ball hammer. Then also it was a bit hard to fit it on the guitar. The little screw seems to be a bit longer and thicker than the standard screw and quite hard to get deep enough. And you really have to push it down all the way for the lock to work. but worse than that is that the head of the duslop screw is quite poor. It is week and will easily break if you arent very careful and then you have to drill it out. Finding a better replacement screw may be hard becasue the head has to be very exact to work. I was very careful and inserted the screws slowly (and by hand, not using an electric screwdriver). Works quite well after they are installed but i wish Dunlop had spent another dollar on a better screw. the epihone straplock i never figured out, but have heard they are unreliable and got the Dunlop instead. Kind of have to keep using Dunlop on all guitars now since it saves me getting new straps as well.
hoss49
I just drilled the holes deeper for the Dunlops. Then the screws went in fine, with no harm to the guitar or the screw head.
