Too Many ("Personal") Guitars? What's the Limit?

If you know exactly how many guitars you have, then there's room for more......

I don't bother keeping track of the numbers anymore.....

Same thing, but with guns for me.

I currently have 29 stringed instruments-26 guitars,an autoharp,a ukelele and an electric mandolin plus 11 amps and a myriad of effects. Each guitar has its own sound and feel even each of my 4 Strats has its own voice, although easily identifiable as a Strat each one has its own unique tonal fingerprint, the same goes for my 2 Casinos.I am a tone junky and the more guitars I have the greater the number of colours i can access in my tonal palate. There has yet to be a guitar or amp made that can emulate the tonal nuances of every guitar made so tone junkies are stuck with having to go out and add guitars and amps to their arsenal. Some people may be content with an uber-distorted Les Paul through a heavy metal pedal and a cranked amp but I love to hear the clean unadulterated tone of a well made guitar. That's another thing, after many years working with wood and many other materials I've come to really appreciate craftsmanship and the differences of techniques used by assorted luthiers. It's intriguing to see the different techniques used by master builders from various countries and I really appreciate excellence in craftsman ship.So that in a nutshell is why I need so many different and even similar guitars.BTW I know fellow player/collector from France who has no less than 80 Strats alone and there's also a guy I know of who has more than 80 Orville Les Pauls. When I see guys like that I don't feel so guilty for only having 29-so far.

Bonzo boy...

This technically is off topic but...

You have good comments but they're difficult to read when there are almost no paragraphs to discern.

The human eye doesn't like dozens of lines of type to read. It loses its place.

Keep writing as you do - it's aok - but chop things up a bit for readability please.

Thanks for pointing that out Milod,I'll make a note of that and keep it in mind in future postings.I feel that there's no limit to the guitars one can have to add to their total tonal spectrum-no such thing as too many.

Could be a lot worse guys and girls. Could be spending the money on stupid things. Thats the way I see it. I just wish I had money for Gas lol....

Oh well, maybe 2011 will finally bring me that R8 that I've always wanted. Could never part with my Traditional but an R8 and a nice Marshall would be super sweet for 2010 :)

Why not, Charlie? I know I have too many guitars but I don't actually think way. I look at is as my own private music store.

Have you ever been in someone's home where the entire place was littered with gear? I have - a local guy was selling his 50th anniversary R9 and I went to check it out. Pretty big, old house that I'd say was around 4,000 sq ft. I went in through the side door (because I later saw the front door was blocked by a Marshall stack) and literally had to step over a few amps blocking the doorway to get in. The guy said he had well over 100 guitars (a good 50 of them were just lying around on stands, couches, the floor, on one another, etc.) and somewhere around 50 amps...and I'm not talking cheap stuff, either - '52 Les Paul, '61 SG, maybe 15 '50s/'60s Strats/Teles - just sitting there like garbage. The house was just littered with gear. I was at a loss for words.

Yep Ive been in a house like that [crying] [crying]

every day! But I don't leave them laying around there in cases or wall hangers

Well, as a gigging musician, I soundly believe that "Two is One, One is None".

You have to have at least one backup guitar and I usually use the same philosophy with amplifiers.

The rest are acquired over time and I use them all regularly. I have 7 guitars and they are used in rotation.

I don't buy guitars to collect or for "value" but each one has its own feel and vibe to it - they have personality.

i found my GAS abated once I finally bought what i really wanted. I spent years buying guitars because they were cheap, or cool looking or "good enough." But I always wanted more. Then I sold most of them and I bought my R9; I have been content ever since. In fact, I wouldnt mind selling a couple of the ones I have because I never play them.

Variety is the spice of life. It's fun to pick up different guitars for different moods. I have 2 American Fender strats, both very different. Gotta have back up in case of string breakage.
