Im going to America in the summer

Hey, on a weekend I could help you get to Rushmore but...

It all depends whether you want more of a rural or an urban experience. Believe me, you get 90 miles from Rushmore and you can be in areas with .5 or less human beings per square mile.

But... some also has to do with "when." I would NOT recommend early August for Rushmore or anywhere else very near Sturgis, South Dakota, USA, 'cuz it's the Bike Week there and nearly all the accommodations in the area are hard to find in a strong biker year.

On the other hand, for July 4, there may be no place better than the geographical center of the US that's perhaps 90 minutes from Mt. Rushmore. A town of 5,000 with the next town to the north some 70 miles away... one of the nation's oldest rodeos on July 2, 3 and 4...

Then again, it ain't urban. It makes Ohio look like the whole thing is a crowded, horribly cramped village because you can see 30 miles or more just from the high prairie...

I am from Cleveland, so I hope you enjoy the Buckeye State.

Someone mentioned Cedar Point, and there really is nothing else like it in the world in terms of collection of amazing thrill rides, including mind-boggling roller coasters. At Cedar Point, you will be exposed to the best...and worst people that America has to offer! [biggrin] From Columbus, you would be looking at about a two hour drive.

NYC is amazing, but you are looking at a good 7-8 hour drive each way, not to mention the costly nightmare of parking when you get there. If you travel to NYC, DC, or Chicago, you should at least consider Megabus.com

Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame really is great, especially considering, you know, that you are on this guitar forum! While there, check out a Cleveland Indians baseball game, less than a mile away from the Hall. And Cleveland is a cheap city.

Good luck! PM me if you need any more advice!

Jeff

I thought you have to be 25 years old to rent a car in the USA? Better double check before booking the car and paying anything.

I just rented a car in Florida a month or so ago, and I thought they had a 25 yrs old limit. I'm 43, so it was fine.

EDIT: Just looked it up online. Under 25 means a surcharge for being a younger driver. But looks like 21 the minimum age requirement.

So, call and ask before booking - internet info ain't always right.

Woops, Should have read the date you were going to arrive. Here's what I had Posted for you.

Dang, 2-3 weeks!! I just love road trips so here's what I'd go see if I had come here from the UK.

Head to Milod's neck of the woods (around The Black Hills) for a couple of days, then off to Yellowstone National Park and nip up to Boseman MT for the Gibson Factory. You'd get a sense of the size of the USA that way with some really cool sites and see a great place for guitars just a days drive from Yellowstone. Big trip, but it's a BIG country. That's why we have such a BIG national debt.

That would just be what I'd do (been on a few trips like that). I don't care much for the metropolitan scene anymore. The Rock & Roll hall of fame would be great & if you like Bikes then the National Motorcycle Museum in Ohio would be excellent. What could be better, Big Skys, Great Acoustic Guitars, & Some great bikes to start things off!! [thumbup]

Speaking of licenses.

As an outlander, what does one have to do to be approved to drive on US roads? When I went to Germany we were told that in order to drive in Germany we needed to take and pass a driving test. Since our daughter and SIL were living there and had acquired licenses, we just let them chauffeur us around.

Oh, and in case you hadn't thought of it, you'll need to provide proof of insurance covering the US.

Oh, yes and if you do have to go to the Driver's License bureau, be sure to register to vote! [thumbup]

Finally! Just in case you hadn't heard, we drive in the right side of the road here.

That first picture...by any chance are those puppets/a costume from when Roger Waters did The Wall live in Berlin? Cool guitar pics too, glad you enjoyed your trip! Should've stopped by up in Rhode Island, sure you can drive across the whole state in an hour but the beaches here are pretty nice [cool]
