Murph
I've got a Shar Pei that's going on 4 and have cheaped out lately on food, and not hunted as much as in the first few years of his life so he's getting less deer meat. He's big for a Shar Pei and a great dog and I'd like to give him any advantage I can. Educate me on your favorite dog food.
ChanMan
aWe use Royal Canin and our dogs trhive. They have different formulas for various breeds, but I'm not sure if they have one for Shar Peis. From a different perspective, I have gotten them a bag of Chef Michaels dog food and they dance when I serve that up. We don't think they do as well nutritionally on that food, but they certainly do love the flavor!

Bingo. He was not eating well last summer and the wife found a cheap brand he liked, and there ya go. Now I think he's not as healthy as he could be. I'm going to go get some Blue Buffalo when the stores open and starve him until he'll eat it.... (not literally.....)
Guest Farnsbarns
We discovered a dry food here for working dogs called Ataki (not sure of the spelling). It's only available at a few specialist places and because it's for working dogs it's exempt from our VAT (20% sales tax). You have to buy a minimum of 15KGs but that helps the price too. Our dog loves it and it's apparently very good nutritionally. We mix that with various sources of meat, sometimes it's what we're having (she loves chicken) and sometimes it's dog meat. Izzy
I feed my dog Purina One BeyOnd. Not the best, but good enough. Basically, I read the back and looked for NO corn and for the first ingredients to be MEAL (chiken or lamb) not by-product or "animal" MEAL. MEAL means the meat has been "rendered", it is concentrated. If your first ingredient is just plain chicken...you're getting duped into buying less protein. I worked at a vet clinic and when dogs came sick the vet would say, "make him his own stew with lamb, rice and veggies." I think if we threw some cheap meat (on sale section) and some veggies and rice in a crock pot and served the pups from that all week, they'd eat less and be healthier. Note the poo of your pooch. My dog's poo is smal and odorless. That's how it should be. If your dog goes a lot and it stinks...not a good thing. That means he's only using a small portions of the food, the rest is waste. Wow...I just went off. My bad.
slavestate
That's where I'm headed. You'll be very pleased. I worked at a pet store for awhile and they really are one of the only options out there for honest food. So many of these companies get bought up after they release a product that is sincere and it takes a great length of time for the truths to come out about their deterioration. Blue is not one of those companies.

Educate me on your favorite dog food. any kibble w/no soy...as soy made our Shar-peis fur fall out & turn to hot-spots. the best food we've found at a reasonable price is Purina-1 or Pedigree Mrs.B. just informed me that Purina-1 has two forms of soy.....so that leaves Pedigree, which is what we fed our Shar-Pei. and his skin problems went away. bonzoboy
I feed my 100 lb. German Shepherd a mixture of mostly dry food with a fair amount of premium canned food stirred in and mixed with just enough water to make it very moist without being watery. Most days we also mix in whatever's left on our plates and we always keep left over gravy to stir in with her food. She's a very fussy eater and if you give her what appears to her to be too much food in her bowl, she won't eat any of it.You have to give her about 2/3 of a cup at a time, any more than that and you'll end up throwing out the whole works. BTW:Despite being 100 lbs. she doesn't have one ounce of fat on her and she's just a very big girl with a big bone structure. She was so tiny when she was a pup-she was way smaller than our other shepherd was as a pup-that we named her Poco-Spanish for little-but she is far from little now and her size makes her look very intimidating, but in truth she is very timid except when someone comes near our property or near the truck when she's in it alone.
