It's a "passive" chip, like on old credit cards, where it just bounces back some code (e.g. serial number), which is then accessible in their database. So no big deal in any case (except for ruining those slabs of precious wood). I think it's all #bs. 😁
I read it too. There was a link somewhere and the date was recent. So it is not "fake news" in any way or form.
For a manufacturer it's the proper thing to do, to inform their customers of any policy change. So it's a WIN-WIN for everybody.
And just some minutes ago, the second series of THE PROCESS has begun on YouTube, showing how guitars are made in Bozeman, Montana. Wild coincidence, or 2023 coming for great acoustic guitars?
Never saw these guys before. Personally I am not a big fan of the music "style"... However it is quickly apparent, that they are top-tier as guitarists, technically & artistically! 👍
I presume, that it is not Richlite that you are talking about here, but some cheaper way to make lower end fretboards.
Out of curiosity, I Googled Richlite, and it is made from "high quality paper with resin": https://www.richlite.com/whatisrichlite
The correct anwser is "because it's iconic". Never had a Martin (or acoustic for that matter), but I know its sound from countless songs. No custom shop ambitions, just a normal set of guitars. This music is sheer enlightenment! 😄
Until then a Les Paul Standard (check), LP Tribute Special (check), ES-335 (check)... still in line there's a J45, and a SG 61 Standard. (Also a Fender Tele and a G&L Asat Special). I view the Martin D28 as a luxury! 😁
We can make some small exceptions, though. When one has a Tobacco Burst LP, a cherry ES, maybe a Vintage burst J45, and a natural Martin D28, you are allowed a blue Strat or LP Special. I could live with that! 😎
