  1. OP on a Gibson sponsored site: "What kind of beginner guitar should I buy with cost not being a concern?" FM1: Yamaha FM2: Alvarez FM3: Gibson, I don't like Yamaha FM4: Martin FM5: Some Yamaha's are cheap and poorly made FM3: Some Martins are made in Mexico FM6: Some Gibsons are made in China FM7: Those are Epiphones FM6: Yeah, "BUT QUALITY" ..... some Epiphones are higher quality than some Gibsons FM4: How dare anyone point out, on a Gibson site, that some Martins are made in Mexico. SOCIAL MEDIA - not for the feint of heart.
  2. I had those slowing down for my on a '64 LG1. I cleaned the innards out and oiled them and it made a big difference. Although enclosed, you have to remove them to replace them, so you can try using a bunch of WD40 shot in there to force out all the dirt and clean and then some type of lubricating oil. Before putting back on, they should work fine. BUT, of course, if they don't = you are no worse off and can order a replacement set. Difficulty, obviously, is getting a set that matches the holes already in the headstock. Others here will no doubt have that info.
  3. Technically, they've been made in a dozen different countries - Korea, etc. And one could argue they started out in Turkey. Where Mr. Epiphone started making them out of gourds or something. Currently, mostly in China I believe...
  4. I have 3 'Trophy Wife' guitars. Have, over the years gotten to the point I can say we are equals. They've gotten a little old, I'be gotten a little better. Working together.
  5. A question many of us here will enjoy speculating on - even more than when asked by an Intermediate Player wanting to upgrade from his/her Beginner Guitar. I'd steer clear of anything over $1000, just to narrow the field. If you have access to a good Used Market, you'll find stuff there. Then, If And When you feel you've achieved a major breakthrough (completed Mel Bay #2 ?) you can reward yourself with a better guitar. Yamaha makes professional grade guitars, not just Intermediate and Beginner. Gibson does not make 'Beginners'. Their subsidiary Epiphone does - in China. The key - as mentioned above - is to get one that is "Set Up" well. If you have to fight it, you'll lose. A good music store, specializing in guitars - with a 'technician' - should be able to steer you to one they can tweak. Go with Light strings for at least a year. Not Medium Light. Don't worry about a 'cut-out', as a beginner you won't be playing that far up the neck on this one. And, finally, get one that 'looks good'. If you get an ugly one, you'll tend to leave it in the case.
  6. Rolling Stone came out with a list in 2010. I had to go back to find it. Only 100 Top guitarists then. As I recall there were only a half dozen females Joan Jett. Joni Mitchell... About as useful as if Amazon published lists like this. "Top Ten Chaffing Dishes of All Time" in 2010. And then - came out with "Top 25 Chaffing Dishes of All Time". Anyone who disagrees with the choice of "Kitchen Aid" in the top spot also gets a punch in the nose.
  7. Em7 - another term we use here to suggest the other person or persons melt at the mere thought of a heated discussion. Merriam-Webster is constantly challenged by the new words and new definitions of existing words too. So - it is understandable some here don't appreciate the nuances. I'm sure every country has their own words to describe the same things: Putz comes to mind. Cheeky Monkey... Even the term 'wood' has a double meaning. (Got to keep coming back to 'guitars' so I don't get criticized by the ... WHOOPS, almost used another pejorative !
  8. I'm Flubber, You're Hide Glue. (Got to keep it ALL ABOUT GUITARS, right?)
  9. Sorry. Maybe the term is more 'slang' than a 'colloquialism' ?
  10. Read her bio. Definitely a great person. She was a pioneer in 'Women's Rights' but in a good way. Several years, after 'Three's Company' became a hit, she insisted she get paid the same amount as John Ritter. The difference was significant. Producers refused. She called in sick for a few episodes. Got fired next season, series died. So - she raised awareness tenfold of the unfairness in pay practices for people doing the same job. Which, in the late 70s and early 80s was usually women. In my 'field' in the early 70s, women represented maybe 10% of the total - 20 years later, it was at least 50%. Fair pay, I'm sure, followed fair hiring. Ironically - Sommers was basically 'boycotted' by Hollywood for being a real live example of activism, and not just an airhead talking the talk.
  11. I can't really comment on my preferred B/S tone wood - because I don't have enough specific experience. (Obviously, I'm commenting anyway.) I think you would have to have three guitars - representative models like the J45 - with the 3 different tone woods, strung with the same brand of strings. THEN, you would have find someone with 'normal' hearing, and a player who can play a half dozen representative snippets identically. Without a reasonable attempt to use 'the scientific method', all a peson can do is decide which guitar of several they own and play regularly - sounds best to them - and then assume it is based on the tone wood. So, I know which of mine sounds best, clearly. But it would be presumptuous to recommend the tone wood and NOT disclose it could be due to the body shape, bracing, age, strings, etc. Maple.
  12. American colloquialism. A person, male or female, who is part SnowFlake and part Blonde.
  13. Not something that has shown up on my 3 Bozeman made guitars. So, I would assume it must be a function of variations in the manufacturing process and not the move from Kalamazoo/Nashville to Bozeman. A maxim for achieving 'quality' is 'consistency'. Did they run out of one type of inlay glue and use another for a week? Another possibility always to be considered on a guitar 13 years old - is did a previous owner do something untoward to it? The Corvette owned by a little old lady that only drove it to church on Sundays, is suspect when someone says "It was kept under my bed for x years." This is no doubt only cosmetic and, as you suspected, not an indication the guitar is a fake.
  14. Yep - fwiw, I couldn't open link either. Keep plugging away. Woody Guthrie wasn't in it for the money either. Matter of fact, I'd guess most who are turn to 'The Dark Side" and slide into "Popular Mainstream Music".
  15. Guitar Rescue 101 !!! Fantastic Job. Saved this one - it had one foot on a banana peel and the other in the trash heap. Also curious how you fixed this divots ?? They seem to suggest this guitar was played and loved for at least 50 years on a regular basis.
  16. Really great guitar work. And a fantastic piece he chose. I didn't recognize it as "Wake Up Little Susie" though. Dr. M - truly a beauty !
  17. I never told her. She didn't ask. BUT, she also gave me a really nice Thalia Capo I use and leave out so she can see it. 🙂
  18. I was, I think, 16 when they surfaced on the world stage. Some of their songs were amazing. As JVi noted - there's a point in our live where our musical sensibilities are heightened and what we hear then creates a foundation. (well, I paraphrased). But, some of their songs never struck a chord with me. As Sgt.Pepper said - later albums seemed over-produced. Probably started right after "Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
  19. Video is outstanding. He's great: "The students are all Caucasian, but now identify as Asian... thinking that'l increase their SAT scores !"
  20. I had a dog named "Farley" once. She self-identified as a cat.
  21. Was a guy named Mike selling them? A pillow for your guitar, or a pillow for you with a picture of your guitar? I had a 'legitimate' one. My daughter got it for me, one desperate Christmas Present shopping event a decade ago. Sits on your knee, "C" shaped foam w a black zippered cover. Sort of like a classical guitarist would use to raise the smaller classical guitar. I think they came in 'large' or 'medium' size. Tried it out a few times - gave it up. Gave it away. To "GoodWIll" ! It would probably be ok if you were 7 feet tall and playing a 3/4 sized guitar.
  22. So ... Since you're running out of time - here's some ideas. Go to the retailer you purchased the actual Super Jumbo 200 from and get THEM to help you by loaning you one OR loaning you an Epiphone Look Alike Version. Phone around to Guitar Centers to see if they have any 'rentals' they would rent to you. And, less 'honestly' - go to the GC website for Used Acoustics and find one you can get shipped from wherever it is to your closest GC, pay for it as if you were buying it and, return it after the celebration. Find another new one that can be shipped to you before the ceremony, purchase that one and cancel the order with the retailer that screwed you. Consider a Different Iconic Model. The Hummingbird is as impressive visually and tonally. (Is that a word?). Get a photo of an SJ200 - bring it to some graphic designer place to have them make a life-like blow up. Like when people get checks from the Lottery. As a final observation - many of us here are retired. I think we could count on one finger those who got a brand new $5k guitar as a Retirement Gift. So, you're friend should be ecstatic if he just gets a copy of the Back Order Slip. G'Luck !
  23. Next you'll be claiming you like "What strings do you use?" threads and are saving up for a Pelham Blue J45. What have you done with the real Sgt. Pepper ? How about a gratuitous comment about "G Strings" !!???
  24. Agree. When even the experts here get tangled up in their underwear trying to figure out the difference between Historic, Vintage, True Vintage, '42, '43, Inspired By Gibson and Endorsed versions - just for one model .... it might be time to call the Marketing Department in out of the parking lot.
