tweed2
OK, for those of you that haven't been following along, I picked up a "USED" 62 Reissue Sheraton last week, and it arrived today. Love the retro case, the neck inlays and the maple laminate body look great in the Natural finish. Two things that I knew when I bought it. First was that it was USED. I'm fine with that, at $460 (with reissue HSC), it was still a bargain. And, the Gibson minis had been pulled and "upgraded" to Seymour Duncan SM-1s, which was OK, too, because I have a set of Zhangbucker firebirds in the works already. Here's the thing that surprised me. All of the info that I've read on this guitar says that the hardware is Gold. The hardware on mine is definitely not Gold, the seller said it looked more Nickel to him, he was specific on that in his description. I think that it looks chrome. So the tuners are Grovers, the trapeze is a Frequensator, all metal pieces look correct, except the color. Could it be this became a 311 guitar because all of the gold hardware had a finish melt down? I recall complaints of flaking plating when they first came out. That would explain the pickup replacement. Don't get me wrong, it looks and plays great. So far, after a quick 15 minute tune up and play, It's all I expected. Just trying to figure out what I have here. I'll post pictures shortly, let me know what you think. Also, I'm going to pull the label out and try to figure out what the serial number is, it's hidden under the refurbishers label.

6string
If there was a problem with the gold flaking off that could easily explain why yours is "Used". Especially if there are no repairs to the body/neck. Flaking hardware = replacement = non-original = Used. Seems very plausible to me, and a great way to get a killer guitar at a reduced price. Looking forward to pics.
tweed2
well, here's a picture of Sheri Baby (from Frankie Valle and the 4 Seasons song) and the other Epi hollow bodies I have. Now I will agree that the hardware on the ZBD (right side)is gold. But the color on the Sheri (left side) isn't even close. I dentical to the chrome finish on the Casino. Here's a closer pic of Sheri Baby

Thanks Epi !!!
bobouz
FWIW - I recall seeing a listing, I believe on Gbase, for a store or private seller who replaced the gold hardware with either nickel or chrome hardware on this model. It was touted as a selling point, as the change made the instrument unique compared to the stock version. Not being much of a fan of gold hardware, I thought at the time that it looked quite good. Could be that your guitar is one of those. Regardless of it's origin - Congrats!

Seems like a lot of work and expense, unless someone wants to hoard gold hardware for these. Whoever did this, did it right, and I'm happy with the results. Just curious. ne_buddy
Late comer here. I'm thinking about buying one of the straggler Sheraton Reissues and it seems to have those same finish cracks on the binding/neck near the nut (first few frets). So... Has anyone actually had a '62 Sheraton Reissue with a broken headstock or a seriously cracked neck (i.e., not just finish cracks)? Has anyone had a Sherri Reissue whose finish cracks got significantly worse over time? Thanks for your help!
capmaster
Very nice add, Tweed, congrats on your buy! Looks very nice from here. Love chrome over everything else, then nickel, then gold, so I think it would be OK for me, too. :) Happy playing, mate. B)
Dennis G
Congrats Pat, looks like a great addition to the herd. Question for you though: I noticed how close together those guitars are hanging. Was this just for the pic's or do you keep them that close together? While you don't get as many 'quakes up there as we do, the ones I have hanging are about 6" apart, and I've only hung solid body's, not semi's or hollows. I fared quite well during the recent round of shakers, and was actually sitting here looking at them during one of the aftershocks. They didn't even budge (thank you Hercules hangars). Now back to our regularly scheduled program. And I only have one guitar with gold hardware (my Ovation Elite) and it's a PITA to keep looking good. I'm a chrome or nickel guy if for no other reason than that.
tweed2
Thanks everyone, she's going through a transformation as I write this. I've lengthened the bass lae (no mkore string length issues), added my McCartney strap pin backing block, changed the pick guard to a black one, and I'm getting ready to pull the SD mini hums and install the custom wound Zhangbucker Firebird pickups. I'll change the input jack while I'm in there, but probably leave the pots. Plays, looks and sounds good now, can't wait until the Zhangs go in. As far as the hangers go, those will be reworked shortly. They are to close, and since I've cut back a guitar or two, I can space them a little further apart. Always a keen eye for details, Dennis. Kaiser Bill
Congratulations...she is a beauty. I've been toying with getting a 335 or an Eppy similar to a 335...possible even a 339. Then again I just got the Midtown Kalamazoo in October...do I REALLY need another guitar of a similar configuration?? Of course if the price is right!!!!!!
