which epi next

Well I need some advice on my next guitar purchase. I have 2 great semis a sherri and Ibanez. Now I'm thinking either a Dot or a Casino on the next buy. I'm hoping after I liquidate some of my stuff I might be able to bargain my way into a higher priced Epi. Either an Elitist or a vintage Japanese epi.

If I was to go on a dot or Casino, There's plenty on CL, would I be better off shooting for a particular model or reissue model on those 2 epis? It's not that I'm a professional player but would like something really nice, as much as I could afford. For instance, I could go regular Dot,never played one, or maybe I should look for a deluxe Dot.

Everyone talks about the Elite/elitist so I'm thinking that's just about the benchmark. Actually they seem a little more reasonable than Vintage 80s Terada or Fujigen.

Any input would be appreciated.

I'll reply with the two you mentioned: Casino and Dot. Here's my Elitist Casino:

I added the Bigsby, but it is basically my "go to" guitar

Then, there's my (highly modded) Dot:

After all the mod's, from a cost point of view, it's a coin toss between the Casino (which I got a great deal on) and the Dot, but don't sell the Wildkat short either.

It's somewhat the best of both worlds for a lot less money:

Dennis, I cant remember how many times I've told you this, but that that Dot is beautiful. Macoshark, Of all of my Epi's, it's a toss up between the Casino and my '62 Reissue Sheraton. Neither one is "stock", but I'll give the nod to the Casino, only because the Lollar p-90s are just so awesome. In stock form, it would probably go to the '62 RI. There's just something about the total package that Epiphone put together on that one. If you want a good modding platform, well, the Dot ain't a bad starting point.

dennis, tweed,jeff---- thnx for the input. At this point I'm not to much into modding out the guitar thing. Certainly understand it though. I really want them all but that might be the greed factor. It takes me awhile to get to know the guitar, usually. I'm sort thinkin an elite because of there reputation. I'll have to look but I think there's an eliteDot or 335 elite. Guess I'll read up on wiki and see if that narrows it down.

Elite guitars do come up occasionally, on eBay. And although I've never owned one, the few I've played were impressive. I haven't talked to someone who owns one, that doesn't love theirs. My suggestions were to point out that there are a few Epiphone models out there that are great starting points to having a great guitar, without spending the premium that an Elite gets. Just as Elites tend to be a better value than their Gibson counterparts, dollar for dollar. An Elite Casino, like the one Dennis has, is very high up on my list of "next guitars". Not very common, though.

I think for Elites, (which are great guitars) you'll need to go second hand.

most are discontinued..

but that said.. how about..

I have the wine red swing stern, sweet guitar and a very wide ranges of tones, I'm keeping this baby till I'm dead... plus a whole lot cheaper than a gretch country man....

Thanks Pat, I'll take all the compliments I can. It's my second favorite electric Epi to play.

And Macoshark, I've had my Elitist Casino (the only Elitist still in production I believe) for 4 years now, and bought it new for just over half what they're selling for now (my Sweetwater rep was having a "special"). If you can find a used Elitist of any model, they are well worth the coin. My Casino is my "go to" and the quality, fit, finish, etc. is on a par with guitars I own with much more "name recognition" if you will [biggrin]

If you already have a semi and full hollow body Epiphone electic(s) guitar(s) get one of these No one ever seems to get a Wilshire or similar, get one...I might, and probably will...soon. http://www.epiphone....lshire-PRO.aspx

Dennis...Pat's right, that elite Casino is fine. I pulled out my old yamaha fg and played for awhile. That got me more interested in a Hollow like the Casino.. Of course the elitist would be at the top but what would be the next down in craftsmanship, parts, and used price. I'm getting excited. Maybe tweed is right, I can always put better electronics on a cheaper priced Casino. I'm not sure how much dough i'll have after I sell my stuff.

I really wanted to get the Emperor I saw but didn't go for the single cut, I lean towards the dble cut, like my Sherri.

Tweed--I checked out wiki on that 62 reissue Sherri. How good is that model? I know you really like her. What is it about that model that sets it apart from other Sherris. She has NY Humbuckers,Right?

My thoughts on the RI '62 Sheraton. First, the pickups are stock Gibson USA mini-humbuckers (mine was a refurb, and came with Seymour Duncan minis, not bad, but I changed them out with Replica Firebird pickups that I had). People seem to really like the Gibson USA pu's, although I have not had the pleasure of trying them. I particularly like the neck on mine, it's fairly thin (60's Slim-taper), thinner than my Casino. It just feels comfortable. Finally, it's my belief that the '62 RI's came out of China right when they were hitting their stride and cranking out some really good guitars. I'm sure it helps that they used good hardware (Grover tuners, CTS pots, etc), nice finishes and placed more attention to detail. Some like the Frequensator, some don't. I like it, but since I have another Epi (Zephyr Blues Deluxe) with one, I'll replace it with a Vibrola. If I were to get a stock one, I'd probably just change the nut out, that's it. Every one of my friends that has played the '62 Sheraton has been impressed with the quality and feel, so it isn't just me.

Here's a link to a Casino comparison chart. You'll have to enlarge it to be able to make any sense out of it, but if I were to get a Casino other than an Elitist, I think I'd opt for the Inspired by John Lennon model:
