I was thinking the same thing, the plating worn off. Perhaps the previous owner used it as a palm rest. As far as the E string... it's female.

Yes. When I worked in a machine shop, they called this 'rusty fingers'. Scott Grove had to change strings mid gig sometimes. Those players have no choice but use coated strings all the time.

Overwashing the hands. Covid must have been a blessing for string makers.
