Murph
I'm burning out on this constant blaze of insanity.... Years ago I did some solo acoustic gigs, just me and the J45, small pubs, would joke and tell stories between songs, ect. I've made the same, and better money. Just rambling I guess, I just wondered if anybody else here has, or does solo gigs and enjoys it?
Californiaman
I've been thinking of doing the same thing. We've got a couple of good places around here for solo artists; mostly small bars, wine tasting places and the such. I know one guy who does it regularly and gets paid pretty good money to do so. Why not, Murph. Give it whirl.
Murph
I used a Carvin AG100D on a stand. It's 100 watts with a 12 and a tweeter and some digital effects, and would run the extention speaker to my monitor, either my old Carvin, or a JBL (both 12's w/horn). That was plenty for smaller clubs.
duane v
On Saturday Evenings they do little solo deals at the Fret House, but nobody gets paid. The waiting list to play is crazy long[confused]

I have done the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville a few times, but the p.a. is set up, and it's just fun.....
pohatu771
That's how a majority of my shows are. I like it, but I like having a band better. I like being able to joke with band members, and my style has changed to a more band-oriented sound. I can do all of my material solo with one guitar or piano, but it's not as good, in my opinion. milod
Solo gigs are fun. Small duo almost more fun, but the concept is the same. A lotta guys I see nowadays have lots of computerized stuff. One friend has done them increasingly over the past cupla years, too. Actually better money and more relaxed. I just haul the guitar, amp and mike stuff. Thinking about integrating the computer with it all. The current economy may be encouraging the solo act even in casinos and saloons. The casinos are starting to go away from bands, it seems to me, 'cuz people listen 'stedda gamble. m
Murph
Good point milod. I never thought of it that way. I'd never do the computer, just acoustic and voice, but you make a damned good point.
Thundergod
Tried it once... didn't work. But my style and repertoire was different at the time so maybe right now it would work.

L5Larry
I've done many duet gigs with the other guitar player from my blues band. In fact we still use the band name when we do it. Just two guys, sitting on stools, with a couple of mics, a dobro and an archtop. We use no backing tracks, drum machines, or the like. It's a very fun, no-brainer, no-hassle way to make a few bucks. I was working up a solo instrumental jazz guitar set, for like dinner/brunch, country club, kind of stuff, but then got involved with two jazz bands, so my available practice time got diverted to them. I would still like to do the solo jazz stuff, and will hopefully get back to it someday.

FirstMeasure
You should, specially if you're not into your band right now. Money's one thing, and a very attractive reason to go solo for a while. But it will also leave you available for a Better Band if one comes along and you'll still be in the public eye where a better and can see you. Then there's the Artistic Gratification of being able to do the songs you don't get to do in a Big Loud Band. Let's not forget travel. A one man show can get a gig in Vegas or Atlantic City with percs (like Rooms and Buffets) a lot easier than a full band. I have a really swell little one man acoustic show all ready, but I haven't really been able to give it a go because I took an opportunity to start a band with a Good Singer. The band's taking off but I still kinda want to revive the solo idea, at least on the side.

Murph
Update. Checked out the Carvin AG100D last night. What a nice little rig. Sounds as good as it did 3 years a go. The J45 needs new strings, and I'm not sure which monitor to use. I've got another new plan..... (on a side note......) I think I'm going to host an "open mic" acoustic thing and set up the full p.a., and let some local acoustic people get some time..... Kind of like the "Bluebird", in Nashville...... Hmmmmmm? rocketman
Wow, that's a pretty impressive rig for $400! I like the open mic acoustic idea. Wish I could come...
