Guitar Chico
I played this at my local music store and I think I'm in love. http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Fender-72-Classic-Telecaster-Thinline-Electric-Guitar?sku=510474 It has to be the best sounding, best feeling guitar I've ever played. I have a MAJOR case of GAS for this thing. GC
Ron G
It's always interesting to hear others' opinions. I jammed with a guy who had one of those - an older one, too (not sure what year). I played it through a nice Fender tube amp and was very unimpressed, soundwise. Just shows to go ya.
stan 58
Fenders with humbuckers are a fav. of mine!!Teles are cool. Stan.
Just Strum
I have stereotyped Teles 1) They should not have humbuckers 2) they should not have F holes. to me, a Tele is something you have as third or fourth guitar. I consider them more of a "specialty" guitar and not as versatile as say a 335. I refer to them as BUG's Butt Ugly Guitars - but they do grow on you. midiman56
I love mine. It wouldn't be my choice if I only could keep one guitar, but it has a sound that is original and unique enough to deserve to be a part of any well-rounded collection. Besides, Stan is right: "Tele's ARE cool!". I'd take on over a Stratocaster any day ... and I own one of them too. Heck ... as soon as I get home, I'm gonna play mine!!! The day will come when I will probably add one to my collection, but I have others I want more at the moment.
stumblinman
Picked up a Squier 51 the other day, and it's about perfect.. Not sure I'd give up the LP for it, but it's amazingly versatile. It was cheap too (inexpensive) and came in that nice blonde that I love about teles. I have to say I've played it more than my LP since I got it. I like the twang of Teles, but not a fan of strats. If I want a rock guitar, it's LP. If I want something more chimey and twangy, this 51 is perfect. A tele would do too though... My daughter wanted to add some smileys, so bear with me on this post lol. :D/ :D/ :-

stumblinman
I'd heard that, but then again, I don't listen to Led Zeppelin. Always sounded too pretentious for me. They did have 2 good songs though. Dy'er Maker (or however that is spelled) and Fool in the Rain.

snookelputz
My personal Tele is setneck, w/OEM SD '59/PG. Possibly the sweetest jazz tones I can play - as well as much twang as I want, and we all know this pup combo is pretty good OD, too. I've never been a big Fender fan, but I have to say they got the Korean FSR right!
AyushPresley
I am not a fan of Fender but there's some thing that draws me towards Teles.. I really like them. i don't know if it's their shape or their built or their sound but i'd take a Tele any day over Strat. I have seen that Tele with a Hum before haven't played it though..would love to have it in my collection. It ain't Epi or Gib but i'd take it any day
Bender 4 Life
Heres mine.......with a Kent Armstrong hot twinrail bridge p'up, and self installed Bigsby. Its a lot of fun to play, but doesn't hold a candle to my Sherry.
sexygibson
My lead player has one of the '72 re-issues and a buddy had one of the originals. It was one of the best playing and sounding guitars I have ever played. On the other hand; I owned a Tele USA Standard that did nothing for me. i dont get where guys say they are so versatile. Maybe if you constantly change amp settings but to me it was just made for country twang.
Dave
Keith Richards made some great tones using a Tele. My wife bought me a Butterscotch Blonde Squire Affinity Tele for Christmas. I bought a set of Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials to go into it. the stock ceramic pickups wern't very impressive. I just can't tear into it for another couple of weeks....can't wait to do some soldering!
Bender 4 Life
Thats the exact reason I changed the bridge p'up on my MexiTele to a twinrail, (technically a humbucker). The neck p'up wasn't so bad but the single coil @ the bridge was a humming, crackling mess. The K/A unit I put in is completely noiseless, just a little on the hot side but not insane, and still manages to keep the "TeleTwang" almost like the OEM. I prefer Epi's over Fenders, especially Epi. Hollow/Semi bodies, but the Tele definitely has its place in some of the tunes/tones I play.
layboomo
Here's a short list of some guy's who have played Tele's Terry Kath Jimmy Page Danny Gatton Pat Travers Kieth Richards Roy Buchanan George Harrison Steve Cropper Duane Allman Prince Vince Gill Will Ray Jerry Donahue John Jorgenson James Burton That's just off the top of my head.......not a versatile guitar? You might want to re-think that one!
stumblinman
If you like the Tele twang but want more versatility, I highly recommend the Squier 51, they are nice little guitars and sell for 150 at the most used, and they have great options and the ones I've seen, including my own, have higher quality parts and seem to be set up better other than a few sharp fret edges. I was sold first time I played one. They are BRIGHT because of no tone knob, but that is easily tolerated or simply eq'ed down a bit. Look one up if you haven't tried one. Worth a look. Sorry admins, don't mean to talk Squier here.
generation zero
I've got a friend who has his dad's old '56 tele. Not a reissue, but an honest completely original '56, complete with original stock pickups, knobs, wiring, case, and even the ashtray bridge cover. It's beat up from being played for 30 years and stored for 20, but even in it's less than perfect condition it's fun to play. He's been offered $15,000 for that guitar, but he turns down all offers. He'll never sell it, due to sentimental atattchment. I'll have to see if I can get him to bring it out so I can get a few pics of it... On the other hand, my other friend is selling me a '00 Mexican standard tele for $150. It's got a small split in the headstock, but it's otherwise in good shape, and the split doesn't seem to affect tuning.
whitebread
My two favorite guits are 335's and tele's. You'd be surprised just how much you can do with a tele and it's volume/tone knobs. And to Dave, make sure you do the 4-way switch mod with your Tex. Specials: http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/pdf/WiringDiagram_Tele_4-Way.pdf Because their RW/RP you can wire them in parallel and series and get single coil sounds and/or humbucker sounds. superbadj
I have a '62 Custom tele RI and a '72 Custom Tele RI, and yes, teles are some of the most versatile guitars ever made. Just look at that list (and there are plenty more) of people who've played them with great success. Alternative, rock-n-roll, country, jazz, blues (Muddy Waters, anyone???), name the style and a tele has been there. It's a very straightforward, honest guitar, and the Tele would be my personal #1 choice, even though I have a couple of Gretschs and I just 10 minutes ago welcomed a Casino into my house. They're great guitars, and those thinlines are pretty freaking cool, too. You should take a look at the '72 Tele Custom, though. It has the Wide Range Humbucker in the neck, like that thinline, but it has the classic Tele pickup/bridge setup. To me, that's a wonderful combo. I just couldn't do without the Tele Bridge pickup. That is what MAKES a tele in my opinion.
Big Norm
My MIM Standard Tele is my Back up guitar for gigs and I'm practicing also with it quit often. I changed the neck single coil pick up ( That I found to weak ) for a Humbucker...and you will be surprise to know that I putted an Epi's hum from a Les Paul Classic that I had change PU's for original Gibson...and it's sound terrific. I also changed the bridge PU for a GFS...still have the twang, but louder.... I must admit it's not a nice guitar compare to my Les Paul Ultra or any Strat or etc...but I don't care...It's for playing not showing...

Epi buckers sound better in fender style guitars than they do in epis, LOL! The mexi tele I'm buying has a Duncan lil' 59 at the bridge, and the stock lipstick at the neck. I'll probably leave it as is for now, barring possibly a paint job. It's a pretty hideous purplish burgundy color. I don't generally care for solid color guitars anyway, but this one is bad, IMO. I may drop a nice figured veneer on it and try my hand at installing binding. Birdseye maple maybe, or possibly zebrawood. Something exotic... wedgeSG
PLUS ONE on GenZero's Tele Custom comment. I bought one for a friend of mine last Christmas. He was thrilled - but the tone was zilch to my ears. We swapped in an old set of brand new Epi's I'd yanked for a BurstBucker swap and hooleeesheeeet!!! Night and day folks night and day. I seem to remember the Squire's pickup range in the low to mid 6's I think. The thing was a whole new animal after that single tweak. For as many stock Epi pickups that are rotated for dirt cheap on Ebay, if this ever catches on they'll suddenly become a hot commodity. My buddy said to simply pitch the Fender units after the upgrade, I practically agreed with him but I never throw out any- thing that might find a use eventually............
