So, if I have this right, Epiphone's Corporate strategy is to discontinue most of their original, fine instruments and tool up to build ... an Ibanez? This just means that when I release my new smash hit game "Harmonica Hero I"* I am going to be a STAR!!!!! *I actually do not have a game being released by the name of Harmonica Hero...but, if by chance there is a software developer out there and they took a bit of the crazy juice tonight and want to make something of Harmonica Hero please feel free to let me know. My idea is a harmonica shaped controller you plug into your Wii console. I selected the Wii to pilot this due to it's harmonica shaped controller. I know they are trying to find new customers with this direction, but I'd stick with the tried and true sg/lp models. How about an Epiphone version of the Gibson grabber/ripper? Funny thing to me, the Fender Jaguar was a surf guitar in my day and it has come back to be seen pretty widely in 90's and 00 bands. Wierd shapes with exaggerated horns, clear holes in the middle, handles so that you can carry it like a suitcase, and clear plexiglass guitars have become popular. I guess Epiphone is adding lines to appeal to the younger players who can afford an Epi but not a Gibby. I saw an ad for the Gibson Les Paul Standard today...MSRP is $3899.00. Whew. I think they are great and I'm very happy with them both even though they are FAR from traditional versions of those two guitars. It just seems to me that Epiphone is going hell-bent for a market that they are not going to appeal to. Just how receptive the Ibanez/Jackson/Dean/ESP crowd is going to be to Epi remains to be seen. I guess it's worth a shot, but I have a feeling that they are risking alienating some of their more tried and true loyal customers with some of these moves. And, what type music those players prefer? I'd guess it would be the much younger crowd, at least in that price range, which might explain Epi's thinking? But, I could be mistaken, for sure... I, being a "dinosaur," wish they'd bring back all the models I grew up playing/loving...Sheraton (Mini-humbucker version), Riviera (also the original mini-humbucker version), keep the Casino, but make it to correct spec's, like the originals, and those wonderful "Jazz" boxes, as well. And, of course...the solid bodies...that were "Epiphone," and not just Gibson clones. We're seeing a bit of that, already. Just hope it continues, in that direction, as well. What they seem to be doing here is delivering a mixed marketing message. Does Epiphone make HM shredder style guitars or do they make licensed reproductions of classic instruments of both Epiphone and Gibson origin? As for the market itself, who spends the most money on mid-priced guitars? Is it the middle aged, mid life crisis type such as myself who is developing a bug for for buying classic looking guitars at prices which almost, but don't quite get me killed, or is it the teenager who can afford one mid-priced guitar, maybe two. Either way, all but the out and out headbanger surely crave for these classic guitars because their heroes of either the '70s or the '00s use Gibsons. As stated above, Epi fills a niche and price range which the competition (in terms of major manufacturers) don't. If they're not careful, the smaller companies will be happy to snap up their disillusioned and confused clientele. This is a dangerous game for any company to play in this economic climate. To me at least Epi is quality hollow bodies and affordable Gibson versions, but maybe they wanna break ground here with a new approach and maybe change the image of the company... or maybe this is just another product and we shouldn't be making a big deal out of it. charlie brown Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 The thing is, if you look at any of the guitar sellar's catalogs/web pages, there are amazing numbers of "Metal" or "Hard Rock," type guitars being made, from all kinds of companies, especially Asian. Maybe Epi is going for the short term...cash in on the "Metal/Hardrock" youth craze (wasn't that already over, some time ago?? LOL)? Just seems strange to try to do what "everyone else is doing," instead of what they're known for, and really great at. But, maybe they'll re-introduce all the "Elitist" models (even if they don't call them "Elitist"), in the near future, as well, to satisfy the more "traditionalists?"
