FANTASTIC !!!

You can add one new owner to this forum.

I just bought my "E by G" Sheraton at an auction sale this week. I've been doing some internet research since I didn't know too much about the history (I simply bought it because I loved the look of it) and found this site today.

Serial number is 71107775' date=' which I take from other posts on this site means November 1987, production number 07775, Samick-made. (initially thought it was a '71 or possible '77 model....which was confusing).

It's vintage sunburst, and in reasonably good condition. Tailstop is pitted, but I suppose that's to be expected.

After re-stringing, it had it's first gig last night. I think once I've had it properly set up I'm going to fall further in love with this lovely guitar.

I'll get some pictures and get them posted.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this site [biggrin

Welcome to the forum and welcome to this thread....glad you found the thread useful...your guitar is same year and month as Albannach's just over the water in the Emerald Isle.

You must have had a good look at the images on this thread do try and post some nice photos, now we have 3 87's will be good compare, mine is 10 months earlier.

It is going to get new "fancy innards and pickups" and a full set up by a well respected guitar tech in Stockholm in about three weeks.

I have not even changed the very old strings, since I bought a few weeks ago, as I want this guitar just right.

Looking forward to seeing the photographs.

Actually, a guitar just like this one is what brought me to these forums. A friend of mine has one and within the next month or so when I recover from a recent bunch of vet bills I'll be buying it from him. So count me in as a "definite future owner."

The story goes that he doesn't play hollows and he took this guitar as payment for something else. He's had it in storage ever since. I had it a couple of months ago just cleaning it up and restringing it. It's missing the pickguard. It's in a 1980's "Gibson USA" case with the pink lining and shroud. It's also missing the serial number, unfortunately. Vintage sunburst model.

One thing I did notice - and I haven't been through this entire thread yet - is that the pickup bobbins seem to have shrunk or something. The screws don't appear to line up correctly with the covers anymore. The covers don't appear to have been replaced at all and their aging matches that on the rest of the gold hardware. Anyone else have this problem?

The pickups are really, generally lifeless too - I'll probably replace them anyway, but it would be nice to have the original equipment on hand and functioning.

Thanks hungrycat that is indeed an E-by-G acoustic first time i have ever seen one of those, I wonder if they are 86/88 Samick like the Sheratons. Begs the question....are there any E-by-G Rivieras, etc, etc out there.....

I tried out a Everly Bros model acoustic with e-by-g a couple of years back, if i remember correctly it had 88 in the begonnong of the serial, would fit this 86-88 period. Samick used to have a range of acoustics with their own brand, why not epis too.

Totally different neck shape on these babies, 3292 got a slim almost v-shape like, and yello is thick like a old les paul.

Colours change from pic to pic as these are taken with a cheap pocket camera, still colour difference is visible. other one must have spent its life in a stand with contact to light, other one probably in a case.

Also I heard theres a tobacco one hanging round useless a rehearsal room in town, gotta contact the guy soon. at least theres something facebook is good for, hunting sheratons.

I thought this was a Sheri E by G deal here...

I saw a Peerless acoustic E by G,.... 2-3 months ago, thinline 140, cutaway, with 2 electric outputs.,1986 I believe.

Had the epi year layout inlay at the 12th fret.

guess I should have shot a pic....[biggrin]

One thing I noticed about your selector switch is that it has been changed out at some time in it's history if you compare it with the earlier models in this thread. Looks like it has been there forever by the way!

The pitting on the stop bar looks to have gone below the nickel but can be polished out to give a nickel finish if desired. If you take a look at the leading photograph on page 8 with the dimensions for the bridge you can see how bad mine was before I started on it.

The body on yours looks a hell of a lot better than that on mine for the same age, some people have no respect at all for works of art!

Currently located in Ireland but only temporary!

Some interesting points there hilleri especially the different necks.....I am sure that will interest a lot of people. I will have to take a closer look at my 87 and 89. hilleri seeing your friend is not a forum member I have put the other down as hilleri(2). Also those headstock differences may be able to help you date your "yellow" interesting thread going at the moment about caring for guitars "pampering" I think it is a bonus the sun got to yours as long as it did not affect the shape of the guitar...

I own Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton s/n 880509155. I bought it new (in 1988 I imagine...it was so long ago that I can't remember...it wasn't my first guitar but I always think of it as my first decent one.)but it's had some mods done to it...pickups and tuners...I never DID like the gold plated look. I also lacquered the fretboard and it made it smooth and bullet proof! I'd stick photos on here but I can't figure out how to...ba***rd technology...well KEEP IT TO YERSELVES THEN!![angry]

I have read elsewhere on this forum about OVEN CLEANER or T-Cut to strip the unwanted gold plating...I bought some oven cleaner five or six years ago and used it once...I must still have the rest of the can somewhere...I presume that it isn't age sensitive??[cool] I also read that the bridges on some Sheratons are of an odd size and that replacements are difficult to find...and a pointer towards WD Music...who can probably charge what they like if there's nobody else. I wonder why it wouldn't be possible to go the Gibson Crest route of a 335 style guitar toting a floating bridge! Get one with a nice long ebony base and it'd cover the stud holes...it'd make for a different sound I bet! Floating bridges aren't everyone's cup of tea, but eons after the design of the tunomatic bridge, there are still lots of rockabilly and jazz guitars that have floating bridges...and if you can no longer stand the ugly appearance of tired gold plating....

music should be fun....and life should be a laugh!!

Hej Mr Buttock

The photo posting is a bit of a palaver you have to open a photobucket account upload your photos to that them you can take the url and paste them in your posts here. There is a button to help with that which looks like a little mountain....press that it will give a little bit of code and you can paste the photo url inside that and your done. Welcome I see this is your second post found your first entertaining....will be nice to see your E-by-G.....

Interesting point about the floating bridge option, thought of that but would maybe sit a little too high I thought....

I have a friend in England a precision engineer by profession and a blues freak working on a solution, and he is working on a fix for the 71mm 74mm mismatch....watch this space....

Thanks Joe (JoeSamick) for the steer to Photobucket...I left a photo of the Eppy headstock on there

http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/FlyingCrossbuttock/PICT0002.jpg

and I thought I'd better leave a brief description for the Photobucket bods who might NOT see any significance in the Epiphone by Gibson logo...hard to believe that anybody could find it in the least bit boring :-k .

If I can time my re-strings right, I'll try the floating bridge off my Peavey Rockingham on my Sheraton and see...or rather, HEAR what it's like. I remembered a Guitarist (UK magazine) review of a 1970s Gibson Crest...with its mini humbuckers rather than PAFs it was doomed from the start, but the 335 look was a bit of a foolie as the neck joint was at the 14th fret and upper access was no better than a full bodied jazzer and this Crest model WAS being aimed at the jazzers...we think!!:-k It might suit a jazzer with a figure like BB King's but that'd be a small market. How often Gibson got it wrong in the late 60s early 70s...anybody remember the model called The Invader?? A marauding ghoul anybody??[biggrin] The names say just how wrong they were getting it. If you Google 'Gibson Crest' you'll see that they were pretty striking to look at...like the Telecaster Fender gave to George Harrison. My Sheraton feels heavy enough, I'm not sure my back would take the Crest.

Though I switched pickups long ago, I'm considering some Kent Armstrong 'P90 in a humbucker case' (lots of 60s humbuckers were like that...single coil!![biggrin] and they wondered WHY their WEM Westminster wouldn't overdrive...err maybe cos yer pickups are more gutless than Leo Fender's...and yer mom's valve wireless will give you more crunch than a Wem Westie being run over by a train!! They ARE cute little amps but awful soundwise!). Add a Bigsby and my Sherrie will be morphing into a re-issue Casino...it's a bit sad that the Sherrie just fails to excite sonically.[bored] The pickups were vile when I bought it, the replacements a bit better, but I just have the glassy sound of a P90 in my head and if I could fill the routing I'd stick genuine chrome dog ear 90s in there. Anybody out there tried the Kent Armstrong or Seymour Duncan 'P90s for a Humbucker' geetar?? PLEASE say they are brilliant!!

My Rockingham is undergoing surgery first...TV Jones Classics...£200 worth. It's a nervous feeling to start modifying a guitar...even when you've done it before. The Sheraton getting a Bigsby will be the scariest of them all but people used to fit them decades ago when there WASN'T 'how to' videos on Youtube...and it looked straightforward on an Epiphone Dot.:-k To boldly drill...holes into the front of your guitars....sssh!!

I tried to go to your photobucket to see some photographs of your guitars. The one you posted has a january date on it..... and it would be really helpful if you could post some clearer up to date photographs of your guitars and your epiphones in particular' date=' especially any you might own that are relevant to this thread.

I'll try the floating bridge off my Peavey Rockingham on my Sheraton and see...or rather' date=' HEAR what it's like[/quote']

The Gibson Crest you referred to was a full hollow like the Casino, Thinline Zephyr (which also because it was full hollow had a floating bridge). Will be interested to see if you can adjust the action to a suitable height using your Rockingham bridge on your Sheraton which also has the centre block which would make it a better candidate for a fixed bridge I would have thought.

Music should be fun....life should be a laugh

J I totally agree with you' date=' life's a Flying Crosbuttock then you die.....:) [biggrin [biggrin]

Hello again Joe (JoeSamick); I posted a close up photo of the "Epiphone by Gibson" on Photobucket. I tried to post one of the 'family' but not only do I have to put up with a camera that chooses dates at random (I've given up trying to figure the darn thing...gimme analogue electronics rather than digitalis[angry] ) but my 'broad band' might possibly qualify as THE slowest on Garrrrd's gangrenous planet! (It's Tmobile) We are talking 20-30mins to shift a 2Mb file...and if that was a joke it'd be funny but I have to put up with it if I wanna buy expensive pickups etc. I finally got the family snap on there: the Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton, an early 90s Standard USA Strat and the Peavey Rockingham. http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae339/FlyingCrossbuttock/PICT0001.jpg

I'm no Lord Patrick Lichfield...nor a Little Lord Fartleroy[biggrin] just a happy snapper...happy when the photo comes out non-blurred. I just hope the cockroaches didn't sneak into the background...free loading b**tards![biggrin] If I'm a bit [biggrin] about taking photos in/of my hovel, then you know I won't EVER post one of me.

I hope my Sheraton and me will now be added to the E be G b's club...we'll feel ostriched else...positively puffined just for being scruffy...yeah, I DO still have the 'e' logo'd scratchplate...it's just that the Rockingham is supplied without a scratchplate of any kind (daft or what??)so I tried to guage the size I'd need by trying the Sheraton's...not nearly big enough...I just forgot to fit the thing back on again....well...that's MY excuse.

Yes' date=' I took the neck p_up out and it is as dry as bone, no wax in there, by the look of it, and does not look like the cover was ever soldered.....the cover moves definitely not attached, I could just pull it off if I wanted.

[img']http://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/JoeSamick/P1010229.jpg[/img]

What do you think? How can this still sound nice through my Valveking 112 in this condition???.....I only use the clean channel on my amp, mostly picking out blues stuff I am learning, either just on the neck pickup or neck and bridge together.

Those appear to be the Samick made p_ups from the period that your guitar was made. I had similar ones

that I removed and took the cover off one of them..there was some "minimum wax around the twin coils and

some coating on the bar magnet..but certainly mine were not potted" or encased in wax. There is no problem

with these on low volume amps. Now if you are running them through stacked marshalls wide open..yes

you probably would get some squeal..but as long as you are playing these guitars at a reasonalble volume

it is not an issue. A lot of the older P-90s didn't come wax potted and didn't cause a problem at reasonable

amp levels.

BTW: The "double potted" Epiphone 57CH I have from my Epi LP has actual wax residue around the edges

of the cover inside.

Fly' That Rockingham is indeed a fine looking guitar......I did not fully understand why you want to try the floating bridge on your Sheraton is the bridge shot..... This thread has nothing to do with the headstock of these guitars it is more about how they are put together internally. You say there is no serial sticker....well from what we have found out on this thread if you could supply decent photos of the neck and bridge routes sometime when you have the pups out. We could possibly tell you if it is a 86, 87, or 88. Also something else that hilleri added and he brought my attention to the neck on my E-by-G is slimmer than my 89 Sheraton he mentioned that I measured and there is a fair difference. This is why this thread exists nothing to do with the headstock. You can find out a lot about you particular Sheraon by reading carefully through this thread.

Hi Carverman

That neck pickup is my favourite stock epiphone pickup....(did not like the pickups on my JP or the 87 Sheraton, I have a cheap Samick (not epiphone) SG and the pups on that are the best stock pickups I have run across) they are fine for me on my 89 Sheraton, I really like the stock pickups on that guitar. Also you must understand I am just comparing these against each other, with the two amps I have here, at the levels I play at...to my particular tastes and to suit type of stuff I like to try and pick out.

I suppose it is a bit of a lottery and I always play clean at low levels and never had any problems with squealin or such...that neck pickup is as dry as a bone...not much wax in there

I am actually selling that 89 Sheraton once I have the 87 modded and set up. Two really nice near identical guitars. Once I have the A1 fro the guitar tech with the 87 the 89 goes but just holding it as insurance until then....Just a couple of weeks now...

Hi, I'm new here.

I have a Epiphone By Gibson Sheraton. There is no sticker on the back, but I'm not the first owner. Mine is in stunning condition, aging nicely, binding yellowing. It's tobacco sunburst, tortoise shell pickguard, both logos inlaid. Mine has gold hardware and smokey transparent hats in the pots.

Looks like an 87 to me.

I'll see if I can get some photos. The original pickups were shocking. I replaced them with A Gibson Classic 57 in the neck, and a T98 Hot Alnico in the bridge. I still have the originals in boxes - nice and safe. The improved pickups really brought the guitar to life, but I feel the GIbson T98 pickup is just too hot for the guitar. It's been in for about 4 years, but I need to out another Classic 57 in it's place to nail the tone.

It's a nice guitar.

Cheers

Mr Marlin
