Great solos from not-so-well-known tunes.

We've done this a few times before but I thought it would be fun to bring back. Name one solo that doesn't regularly appear on a top solo list. Tell us why you think it's a great solo.

I'd pick the solo from Kid Gloves. It's a great mixture of raw power, harmonics and great licks. Lifeson at his best (it starts at around 2:30)...

One of the first ones I think of is this Black Sabbath song from Heaven and Hell. It's so bleak and desolate sounding, but lovely and haunting. (how about those adjectives? [thumbup] ). Plus, I love any solo where I can kinda hear the actual mechanics of the players fingers as they are playing. That's why I love a lot of Page's stuff too.

solo is at the end

Hah!

"One Trillion Dollars

All the war money could be spent on our American People"

IT WAS spent on our American people!!!!

Anybody keeping count on how many trillions have bailed us out?

More in one year than the entire War on Terror has cost in nine.

I've ALWAYS loved this one.

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.

You can listen to the cool, mellow, seventies grooviness to set the stage - makes the solo even more cool.

Or skip right to the business of rockin' at 3:28 - 4:02

FYI - The solo was actually done on a Les Paul.

After seeing this video years ago, I simply believed it was done on a Strat.

I always wondered how to make my Strat snarl like that descending lick at 3:51....

Just a couple years ago, I found an interview with the session player who installed that solo.

Learned a thing or two - like using the right damned guitar!

Too many good ones to name out there, I'm interested to see what else pops up.

Didn't hear it all yet.

I will...

Back in the early days of cell phone ring tones (2004 or so) I was talking to a luthier one day.

His phone rang and that Baker Street solo is what came out.

THAT was f-ing COOL man!!!

Later I got a guy at work to put the opening riff to Fastway's Say What You Will on my company phone.

Then we switched providers, dammit.

I was getting tired of the goofy, irritating ring tones everybody had, so this is how I fought back.

Yeah, I remember that one!

As a matter of fact, I think the last time I heard it on the radio was in Texas - 10 years ago.

Traveling through over the Christmas holidays, they were playing all kinds of obscure stuff.

Don't really care

My...

Aren't we pissy?

Wait - I forgot who I was answering.

Nevermind, all is normal.

[smile]

The point I was making is that most of the Jazz, fusion, whatever, etc stuff is a bit far-fetched for me.

Every time I hear something cool in jazz and listen to more of it, I find myself dozing off.

Even watching it live - I dunno....

Heck, I can at least stay awake when I'm watching a country band play live!

Don't take it personally - unless you feel the need to.

I have always thought that J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. did some awesome solos. He really gets a lot of feeling into his playing, sort of similar to a "modern David Gilmour" in my opinion.

The sound quality of this is unfortunately very bad. The solo begins around 4:04...
