I don't see the "X" button you're talking about, but if its purpose is to hide all avatars, I wouldn't like that, either - I identify familiar users by their avatars. Like damian's gunner cat, that ones pretty amusing. I forget who, but somebody had this cool led zeppelin gif that zoomed in on the mothership album.
