Does anyone camp out for tickets anymore?

Not with services like Ticketmaster etc., although sometimes you need to be fast on some ticket sites as bot programs will snatch up all the tickets for a big show and turn around and scalp 'em on eBay and other sites. For college games at Univ. of Arkansas some people would camp for basketball tickets but I'm not too interested in basketball. For 12 bucks you got an entire season of student football tickets for home games while Houston Nutt was the coach.

I did the overnight thing a few times. Some of the best times I ever had. You meet great people and it was a blast. Sometimes, as much fun as the concert. Sometimes even more.

Dead shows used to be fun for that as well. Camping between shows, that is.

People do at the casino near us for the in-person pre-sales. These take place on the Sunday before tickets are available on Ticketmaster (usually on a Mon or Tues).

The box office opens @ 10:00 a.m. and the earliest I've been there is about 5:00 a.m. for KISS tickets. And there was easily 100 people ahead of me --- the earliest having got there the afternoon previously.

Never camped out, but showed up at the ticket venue about dawn for the Allman Bros "Brothers and Sisters" tour. Still got shitty seats. That's when I learned that the good seats NEVER go on sale to the general public. By 1975 or '76 I had found a "contact" at the concert promoters office, and figured out where all the GOOD seats went. After that I was able to BUY (face value) 2nd, 4th, or 6th row tickets for any show they promoted, which was most of the good ones.

Through playing music around this town for almost 40 years, I've developed a whole new set of back door contacts and tactics.

Larry... Yupper on the contact thing. I just turned down Grand Funk tickets 'cuz I had some personal stuff that took definite priority. And... I cudda been backstage too.

But mostly I think folks are right about the Internet being the sales venue of choice. It's that impersonal addition we've gotten courtesy of technology compared to the day when the fans rubbed shoulders in line for tickets.

That's the only downside to buying tix online... there's no commraderie among fans until the day of the show. But then considering sitting out in front of the box office in the cold, the rain, and the risk of losing out on prime seats by stepping out of line to use the bathroom... not to mention needing to bring food if you're camping out an extended time... yeah, I'll take buying from the comfort of my livingroom through the convenience of my laptop anyday. ;)

There's plenty of time for shoulder rubbing on the way to my seat on the concert day :D

Here it is! I know there was a picture of me and the wife camping out for Who tickets somewhere. Yes... that's a Blue Oyster Cult your shirt I'm sporting there.

As I recall the first lady in line went off when the door opened because they were "sold out" of the first 20 rows. We had a ball though. [thumbup]
