Riffster Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I have been GASing for one of the new Pelham Blue LP Jr, then I thought a bigsby would be in order since to buy this guitar I would sell my Casino with bigsby. Then I Googled Gibson Les Paul Jr bigsby and damned if they don't look great with a bigsby on.
Silenced Fred Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 if you plan on selling dat casino, let me know if its mik! bigsbys look hot on every guitar
Shnate McDuanus Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Nice guitar, but I'm not a fan of the Bigsby on it. if you plan on selling dat casino, let me know if its mik! bigsbys look hot on every guitar Bigsbies don't look that great IMO. They're big, they're clunky and they don't go with the contours of any guitar's shape, really. Floyd Roses have a wider range of functions (if your touch is light enough, you can make a Floyd sound like a Bigsby, but no matter how hard you pull, you can't make a Bigsby sound like a Floyd,) and they're much lower-profile, so they don't get in the way as easily and IMO they look better. It's cool if you like Bigsbies, though--but you can keep 'em.
duane v Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I'm not a big fan of a Bigsby either, but if your vibrato isn't happening, I can see how having a Bigsby can help
stein Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I hear some put them on just for the tone, not just to wank on. I wouldn't NOT buy a guitar if it had one, but I wouldn't think I would put one on a guitar I had. Unless...maybe an SG, to counter-balence the neck dive.
damian Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Best place to buy Bigsbys; Amplified Parts.......... Best place to buy ping pong balls; Amplified PingPong Balls............
Tman5293 Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Not really a fan of Bigsbys and definitely not a fan of Floyds. This is the vibrato bar that I love: I would kill to be able to put one of those on my SG.
brianh Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 It's only a cheap bolt-on Epiphone (that I found for $80 including HSC) and a knock off $30 Bigsby, but after I routed out for a proper P90, rewired it and refinished the neck, it turned into a nice little player. The Bigs gives it some heft, and it stays in tune just fine. Total investment was around $200, and I get more comments on that guitar than any other:

It was much better without one
EVOL! Then I Googled Gibson Les Paul Jr bigsby and damned if they don't look great with a bigsby on. Ace! Not sure what all of the Bigsby hating it about. I could not imagine owning a guitar without one. They are so much more than single note, Neil Young vibrato. They are warped record, pitch bending chord destroyers.
Silenced Fred Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I'm not a big fan of a Bigsby either, but if your vibrato isn't happening, I can see how having a Bigsby can help I'm interested as to how you can get that bent pitch sound by bending all the strings with just your finger. That's what I use bigsbys for and my finger vibrato isn't half bad of I may so myself...

That's what I use bigsbys for and my finger vibrato isn't half bad of I may so myself... Now that's true. Fingers can't really do that quite as well. But, having demoed a lot of Floyd Rose guitars, I know that if your touch is subtle enough you can approximate those effects with one. I'm not trying to discredit Bigsbies--they do work for some people--but I like Floyd Roses for chaotic pitch-shifting stuff. Listen to any early Bolt Thrower, Suffocation or Morbid Angel solos and you'll know exactly what I mean. The solo at 1:46 is exactly what I'm talking about.
krock Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I had tuning stability problems with every guitar I played with a bigsby on it. Maybe I was being too hard on it, but is there actually any way of improving it?
damian Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I had tuning stability problems with every guitar I played with a bigsby on it. Maybe I was being too hard on it, but is there actually any way of improving it? Bigsbys are not Floyd Roses.... ....When used properly, they stay in tune very well, even with non roller bridges....Strings binding in nuts can be a problem....Add graphite or nut sauce, or a Tusq XL nut....Neil Young goes crazy with his Bigsby, and stays (kinda) in tune...............
brianh Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I had tuning stability problems with every guitar I played with a bigsby on it. Maybe I was being too hard on it, but is there actually any way of improving it? As Damian says, it's all about the string tension at the nut. Locking tuners and roller bridges help, but improperly cut and lubed string slots account for 90% of tuning problems with any whammy.
Morkolo Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 The Jr looks great! The bigsby makes the guitar complete. Nice guitar, but I'm not a fan of the Bigsby on it. Bigsbies don't look that great IMO. I love the look of a Bigsby myself but I have to agree with you. I know with practice you can make the Floyd (and even a Strat tremolo) sound a lot like a Bigsby. And if you have a good Floyd that's set up it just won't go out of tune.
Riffster Posted October 26, 2011 Author Posted October 26, 2011 I like bigsbys for what they are, I really don't need a floyd rose. McCartney and Harrison had bigbys on their Casinos, if it was good enough for them it is for me too. Really, all tremolos are a hassle compared to a stop tail or hard tail bridge, My Casino does not hold tune for long if the bigsby is used despite the bone nut and nut sauce on it, but that's why I own a tuner. IMO that empty space on the back of a LP Jr is asking for a bigsby, I don't care much for wrap around bridges either so two birds with one stone as far as I am concerned.

brianh Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 That's a nice axe, that's the look right there. Thanks, it was a suprisingly labor-intensive but short-coin project. Here's the Gibby 57 reissue I based it on:
FirstMeasure Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Ace! Not sure what all of the Bigsby hating it about. I could not imagine owning a guitar without one. duane v Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 I'm interested as to how you can get that bent pitch sound by bending all the strings with just your finger. I have 37 years of playing under my belt
