horax
Ok, so some of you may have seen my other thread regarding my mid-60's sg. Anyway, here is a new thread dedicated to the restoration of the guitar: Just got back from my guitar guy. Stage 1 is completed, and the build is underway. Here are the pix for stage 1. frets have been levelled and crowned and polished, etc. They look fantastic! Mysteries have been solved by getting down to the bare wood. you will notice that there are a lot of little holes that have been filled. You will see the outline of the original, smaller pickguard that came with teh guitar. The batwing was, as suspected, NOT original. It will be replaced with a small pickguard that never should have been taken off. The p90 is a dog ear, and it will stay that way. The headstock is something else...the last owner completely stripped off the paint and logo before RE-PAINTING it black...I don't know why. Anyway, what is in the pic is teh original paint. It will be stripped and re-applied. The fill wood is ply on the front, which sucks. It will be re-routed anyway for the trem to fit . However, as the wood is so horrifically not close to mahagony, it will have to be white instead of classic red heritage cherry. A lot of work to be done, as the guy is going to strip out the filler stuff they used and do it with proper procedures, etc. The body actually looks very, very nice for being so old. So now I need to buy parts and get it painted and assembled. Thoughts?

horax
What kind of tremolo bar was on there? Kahler? I have no clue. Guy I got it from didn't know either. Either way, they darn near ruined a perfect grain pattern. Idiots.

Searcy
Very cool project. What you have tehre is a 1966 Gibson SG Jr. I'm jelous! They didn't have a small or large SG guard. They had one like this. Very cool guitar!

Rabs
Cool project.. and your right that's some nice looking wood, and as far as im concerned the older the wood the better .. damn shame about the state of that headstock though, makes the project much tougher... Why oh Why would you take the Gibson logo off? Will be interested to see how it comes along
horax
I don't know, man. The last guy refinished the whole guitar in black and did a horrible job. But he took the paint OFF the headstock first and then repainted it black....and lost the logo in the process. I ordered a waterslide decal so it can get back on there, but I wish it were original. Jeff-7
Pelham blue with a yellow tinted clear that turns it into that beautiful green color you see on 60's SGs nowadays.
