  1. I've been binging on "Boardwalk Empire" lately. Series starts in 1920 when prohibition was beginning and follows the effects of it on organized crime. Some of it based on fact from what I know but probably a lot of poetic license taken as well. The guys wear some really cool looking three- piece suits.
  2. Not too far off from reality - but you have to hand it to the guy, he's convinced a lot of people that what he does requires a huge amount of skill and finesse. Personally I don't buy it, or the guitars either.
  3. Going back to the case "shroud" - I think it was pretty standard in the 90s sometime. I recall having a LP classic with it, and my ES175 case had one. I always thought it was to insulate the guitar a little better in cold weather, but I may be wrong about that.
  4. I think you would be hard pressed to find a Gibson with a Pau Ferro fingerboard. I don't recall them advertising the use of it at all. Fender uses it quite a bit, and many players seek it out, but I am not aware of any Gibson models that used it.
  5. Watched the first half of Netherlands vs. US World Cup game this morning (my golf game was rained out). I think the Netherlands is just toying with USA.
  6. Very nice looking SG. I don't understand why Gibson would call that "translucent ebony". Usually ebony means black. I guess they made it so they can call it whatever they want?
  7. Fantastic. What an artist. I love the way he violently went after that neck heel with a chisel and a knife and the way he would jam the guitar up against a concrete wall to scrape the sides - yet in the end it all came out smooth as glass. Never saw a ruler in the entire video (OK, a few templates). Thanks for posting. I'll stick to trying to learn how to play and forget building.
  8. In the open marketplace a Murphy aged LP Custom costs several thousand dollars more than a LP Standard. Personally, I am not a fan of "aged" guitars and wouldn't pay more for one. What is important is how they feel and sound. Can you play both of them and compare the two? If the aged one feels and sounds much better than the Standard then it might be worth it to you to make the switch, but that is a personal decision only you can make.
  9. I was never really a pedal guy. I played through a Fender Twin from around '73 or so that had a master volume so you could get some distortion at not a huge volume - that worked for about 25 years. (no pedals or effects) Then I went to a smaller amp with a Yamaha GW10 processor that had 20 available settings that you could program yourself for distortion, reverb, delay, chorus, compression, pitch shift and EQ. It took a long time to program and get the sounds I wanted, but once I did it served me well and I ended up only using about 4 of the pre-sets. After that I got playing with a digital drummer/sound man and I got an Eleven rack. They were about $1K when they came out, but I got in on the tail end when they were about to stop making them and picked up a new one for $300. It has many amp simulators and every effect you could want. Again, it took a while to program the way I wanted, but once dialed in was able to do away with the amplifier altogether and just run that rack into the PA. It is gathering dust as I have pretty much devolved into just playing acoustic guitar now. So, to answer your question - multi effects over pedals. You have to invest more time on the front end getting them set up the way you want, but after that it's gravy.
  10. I don't know about "Calibrated T" vs "T Top" but I've owned several ES Gibsons and the pups were all potted.
  11. Cool X-ray. Can't tell if the pick-ups are zebra. If you just unscrew the pick-up covers you will be able to see if they are zebra or not. Interesting that this guitar has 9 hole weight relief. I though "Traditionals" had no weight relief?
  12. I'm sure we can come up with some complaints if we think about it. First of all, it broke down in the middle of a gig - I'd be disappointed about that. Then you spent $45 for nothing, and it took PRS 3 weeks to fix. Just kidding - glad you got it sorted out under warranty.
  13. A 3 iron make a pretty good cane when your back goes out.
  14. Antique Natural is not a color of paint that you can buy. You would need to sand the finish off your guitar down to bare wood and start from there. Depending on what color your guitar is now and how it was finished, and what type of paint is on it, it might not work at all.
  15. Most (not all) GC people don't know that much about guitars. And it is a horrible place to trade or sell a guitar. They will say anything to get you to lower your price. Good move going with Reverb to sell it yourself
  16. This branch came down in my sister's back yard a couple years ago in a strong storm. The entire tree had to go, the base of which looks to be about twice the circumference of the one Steve took down. Maple - but no takers, it would have had about two years to dry out by now.
  17. My first electric (when I was 15) was a Gibson and I've been playing them ever since. I certainly wasn't "older" or "established". But I got used to the slim taper neck and short scale so other guitars always felt a little odd to me after that begining.
  18. Fun to see that Page played on some hits I would have never guessed like; Downtown/Petula Clark, It's Not Unusual/Tom Jones, and What The World Needs Now/Jackie De Shannon - a Burt Bacharach tune!
  19. I have a 2020 Hummingbird Original that is spruce over mahogany, and it came with PB strings. I have switched to 80/20 for a slightly brighter sound, but really all you can do is try them both and decide for yourself which you like better. We all have different touch/attack and that certainly makes a difference.
  20. To answer the OPs question, at least part, if not all of the expanded plant is up and running. Thus the introduction of the G-Series guitars a few months back (the walnut ones with the hole in the side).
  21. There are 2 on the Gibson website, both come in 2 different finishes. There is a standard and there is the EC which has a cutaway. Just look under the acoustic guitars "modern" section on this site.
  22. You have bypassed the M120 power section entirely, and its speakers are just working as extension speakers of the Fender amp. Yes, normal.
  23. Believe the ME is for the Memphis plant where ES guitars were built for a long time. That plant has now closed and all electric production moved to Nashville.
