  1. I'm just applying my experience of FR guitars here. I used them for about 20 years. I disabled a couple using wood blocks. No sonic change there. However, I replaced the cheapest of them with an equally cheap stoptail. This entailed filling approx half of the trem cavity with wood and hermetal. This produced a tonal change. Firstly it eliminated the 'drone' (which never was transmitted through the pickups) you get as the FR freely resonates. Secondly, and more importantly it reduced sustain and added definition. It was a change I liked, but didn't anticipate.
  2. Hi, and welcome to the forums. Who is the dealer? Got any pictures of this damage?
  3. Good question. Another good question is how many ideas had real potential as breakthrough; only to be scuppered by an indifferent public who just don't like change.
  4. My first thought was yes, but on reflection, that FR bridge is bound to alter it. BTW, did you post enough photos of that girl, um.. I mean that guitar?!
  5. Ok ya got me fair 'n square man. I accept the dictionary description. Its odd though that some of us are happy about owning a lot of guitars and want to include everything. Others (like myself,) are a bit embarrassed and even exclude basses from the count just to play it down. I just think I have too many guitars and see it as a 'problem.' Albeit a quite nice problem 🙂
  6. Now is the first time that its properly heating up here in the uk. So much that for the past couple of nights I've kept the upstairs windows open. This is so much better! Fresh air and the fresh scent of the sea and of the garden. A bit of blow through keeping everything cool as well.
  7. I should think so too. That's not the right tone.
  8. you'll be up to 19 because a ukulele aint a guitar! Yeah. I'm definitely a pedant. 😉
  9. A small DIY report resulting in a surprise! I had a burst water pipe a couple of weeks back (meter cupboard). The breach was a floorboard level. After it was repaired I left the cupboard open and removed the floorboard panel out to dry. As expected, when I tried to refit the panel it didn't fit due to expansion. So... I had to saw a 1/4" inch off one side. Now, these are original boards from 1930's house construction. The boards are grimy and grey with age. But as I was cutting, a beautiful scent emerged, then I noticed the red sawdust. It was cedar! Also the condition of the inner wood was as if it were fresh! That was a treat and a pleasant surprise. Cedar is an incredible wood. Shoe trees are made out of it because of this scent. When the scent is lost, you just lightly sandpaper it to restore the scent again. Keeps your shoes smelling nice as well as crease free.
  10. I thought one of my 339 pickup rings was completely wrong. I was a terrible fit from new. On closer inspection, it had been fitted backwards. This was on a guitar that was beautifully finished and set up straight from Memphis (I know because it was unboxed in my presence). Those pesky details...
  11. Sorry to be the voice of descent, but I have some negatives. 1/ Summer is noisy. Loud music in gardens, the street, from cars with windows down, shrieking kids, drunks walking home etc. I am over sensitive to noise. I wish I wasn't. 2/ The deluge experienced so far has likely trebled the unwanted growth in my garden. Weeds and hedge are out of control, and I will struggle to cut it all down, especially as I am still anemic ATM.
  12. Two years ago, this could have been Man City's official strip (uk trivia) guitar heroes
  13. Well, playing is what its for and its obviously inspiring you to do just that. Maybe just indulge it more at weekends? 🎸 🙂
  14. Its what every dapper young man about town with six n1pples and a heartfelt respect for tradition should be seen in. 🧐
  15. Not only a superb build, but great creative aesthetics. Tidy.
  16. Yes, I control volume using an expression pedal and have my tone set the way I like it (so I don't fiddle with knobs). Also I like the minimalist look, such as your 'acoustic' sig model at the end there. It reminds me of something else. I recall seeing the previous model of Line 6 variax and thought it looked very cool. No pickups! Well it did of course have the vital under-saddle digital pickup but that is entirely covert!
  17. These look state of the art next to some of my dad's planes. In fact I've seen younger ones at the Weald & Downland Industrial Museum.
  18. The wider necks are the 650 (mine) and the 660. Both are in production. The 660 is the regular full bling Ric (checkboard binding, toaster pups etc). The 650 is almost like a 'studio' model. Cheaper and plain, but with 24 frets (660 has 21) and mini-humbuckers (exactly the same as on the 4000 series bass). Its an odd fish. I like the looks of your black Mustang. I've been so tempted by these (and the Duo Sonics) for quite a while now. How do you rate the sound of these shorter scale Fenders Pip?
  19. I don't think I have a pic of the Fender (not digital anyway). It was an early 70s S/B Strat with a maple neck. I'm sure you have the image now. Yours looks better. Almost certainly played better too. Mine played like a pig. The Ric 650 does not have the child sized 41.4mm (1.63") neck width. Instead it has a very wide 44.45 mm (1 3/4'') which is perfect for me. Also the bridge permits string spacing adjustment, so no more pulling the string off the edge!
  20. ok, with the help of PS, I got pretty close to the LP I like:
  21. Though I'm not keen on the sound of an SG, I much prefer its looks to a LP. So since its aesthetics we are going for here, and SG it is.
  22. Favourite is a Ric 650. It neck dives, has a baseball bat neck and I've had a pickup die inexplicably (had to be replaced at my expense). It still sounds and plays better than anything else though. Favourite Gibson: ES-339 Studio Regret? I regret getting shot of nothing (including the Fender I had for 23 years).
  23. Quicksilver Messenger Service 1969 the LP player is Gary Duncan
