  1. Rabs that’s one of the most confounding things about it… This seems to be considered by Epiphone sortof a premium feature for translucent finished SGs. If you look at less expensive examples, the veneer is forgone and the overall appearance is less similar to mahogany. However I have yet to find a single photo of a current Epi SG Standard in cherry without a veneer on front and back
  2. You gotta love michmac’s passion for guitars
  3. Looking back at michmac’s reply he mentions his classic is a two piece body with center seam. Again obviously not mahogany but his guitar in question is painted a solid color so there would be no reason to use the veneer on that model. It is safe to assume that their is no veneer on the black or white standards either. I’ve looked at every photo of a current Epi SG Standard that I could find with a focus on places like sweetwater that post photos of the individual guitars they currently have in stock. I have yet to find a single cherry example that isn’t veneered. Sweetwater is definitely not trying to highlight the seam in their photos So if they’re making them without veneers, I don’t think anyone on the internet has seen one yet. As far as I can tell no dealers have them in stock yet. Probably safe to say that the current Epi SG standard in cherry indeed does have a veneered body
  4. Most likely the package came off a cold truck and the case was opened in a warm house. At this point it would be most reasonable to assume that it was caused by the OP until more info is known
  5. I realize this is not much of a relevant concern here in this thread but since it’s been brought up and I’m curious about it.. mihcmac seems sure that the Epi SG Standard has a solid mahogany body. Obviously there is no mahogany in a modern Chinese Epi but a type of wood which looks kinda similar enough. Has anyone actually seen a recent Epi SG Standard that isn’t veneered on the top and back? Even the current page on the official Epi website clearly shows veneer https://www.epiphone.com/en-US/Electric-Guitar/EPIJ1X839/Heritage-Cherry if you look at current stock at sweetwater they’re all photographed with a glare obscuring the bevels. The most detailed shots appear to show the veneer but I’m looking for it so it’s hard to say
  6. Name one contemporary musician who you fulfills your criteria
  7. I agree. I’m a sucker for a white Flying V and this one really knocks it out with the white headstock face and bound fretboard. only things I’d change would be a new pickguard that doesn’t use rings and put covers on the pickups btw I did not add that smiley face thing to your post little feat I don’t like when people do that to a post I replied to because it looks like it was me. If you replaced this with another white V you should definitely expect finish checking at least somewhere down the line. I don’t buy that the wood was “shocked”. You basically either broke wood fibers or you didn’t, the wood doesn’t know a difference either way. I don’t see evidence of broken wood but I’m not the ultimate expert
  8. First of all, you’re such a talented guitarist Cody. Good to hear from you I kindof overlooked both releases of this guitar, but wow it is very tastefully spec’d out and those pickups sound amazing. This really looks like one of the most interesting Gibson models in recent history and it’s not crazy expensive
  9. I think you’re the only one who tried to imply this is brand new but I’m not really following your point. The OP said GC described the guitar as “lightly played”. Based on the OP’s description of the guitar, the guitar is in “lightly played” condition
  10. Looks like finish checking which probably started at the nut A tiny bit of checking and a single ding on the back sounds very lightly played to me. Guitar players are really impossible to make happy. You give them the finish they want and they complain about it. You change the finish and they complain about it
  11. At no point have I been convinced by the tone master series but it would be cool if it were quite a bit cheaper
  12. Yeah I was talking about the top pic you posted. It’s one of the old ones with veneer.
  13. I’m sure it’s not a coincidence that original Metallica fans are now at just the right age demographic to buy something like this
  14. That top one definitely has a veneer but you’re probably talking about a different model Those Schecters are really nice for the money. With uncle Rabs there to address any set up issues it should be very playable
  15. Cause ya know… who wouldn’t wanna look just like Kirk Hammett
  16. Beautiful guitar. Agreed with Rabs that a metronome is an important practice tool. You might notice yourself becoming more physically tense as you try to play faster. As this happens, try to identify and eliminate any tension. Always try to think of the easiest way to pick the notes. For example some riffs are really easy if you start on an upstroke
  17. I’m pretty sure I used to have an MF catalog that had this guitar in it. Remember getting those catalogs in the mail? I think those fretboard inlays are really pretty cool. Nice addition to your collection
  18. Very much looking forward to it. Absolutely can’t wait
  19. In the good ol days you just died when you crashed. Less bad drivers by natural selection.
  20. Looks normal to me. Beautiful really
  21. On the bright side, these symptoms are sortof indicative of a highly resonant, very fine instrument 😇
  22. We got a couple bloviators on board for sure. Lotsa drivel lately
