  1. I'd A/B them against the Martin, and whichever sounded the most similar, I would return. You're not going to go wrong with either.
  2. IMO there may be an optimal way of storing a guitar, i.e. storing upright in the case, flat in the case, hanging from the neck... and I'm not sure which is best, but there's quite a few good enough ways and really you just need to hit one of those. If it's in a case in a place it wont get banged around, and humidity is managed - I'd say your all set. I actually like to leave mine out in stands, the key to that is having quality stands that wont damage the finish or fall over and again are not in a place it will get bumped, and manage humidity in the overall room.
  3. Very nice BK - looks like pawn shops are good to you! Any plans to do anything with the neck dings - or just learn to co-exist?
  4. That's a glory day story, getting requests - heights I've yet to achieve!
  5. Hi all - thanks for the replies - good thoughts! What i find pushes me is to define something to go after (i.e. Eleanor Rigby) which in turn causes me to play more / practice more. Any songs or specific musical milestones you'd like to cross as a result of your playing / practicing. (this is my out loud wondering voice - ignore if you want) Best failed resolution ever, i hope for another similar one 🙂 Hoping my starting with a jam buddy gets me into a band situation eventually., I love playing but also the camaraderie slant has a lot to be said for it. Ted Greene book - I say finish the book, then put together a little something of your own out some stuff you learned and really liked... then post it here for us to ooooh and aaaah over. Buy more Gibsons... yep Strum your ukelele... it's fun, and 4 strings are easier than 6 (probably doesn't matter to you)... but on the flipside forces you to simplify
  6. Nice - I find recording is an art form, I get to 'good enough' with 1 mic (apogee) into garage band, but know there's a world more to do tweeking the different FX available etc... thinking of investing in formal lessons... you should do a recording and post something 🙂 Very cool, on both fronts.
  7. Being a little proactive this year and thinking about what milestones I want to hit in 2020 (last year my big resolution was get comfortable in open mic settings). For '20, what i got so far is: get a jam buddy 6 open mics and at least *one performance of 40 mins or more eleanor rigby, fingerpicking style I'm 50+ yrs of age, and just starting to get some performing chops... I do have aspirations of rock stardom (as much as can be garnered within 45 minutes of my house ...before 8:30pm) so that's where my resolutions come from. I know most of you have walked the path, been there done that, but I still here musical excitement in your posts, equipment you get, events... so just wondering what types of new things do accomplished and non accomplished folks look forward to in order to keep things exciting. Anyone have any preliminary 2020 musical aspirations... or other. *(my options for a 40+ min. performance are either busking in the center of town, or offer up a show to the local council on aging or other places that would be happy with just to have an occurence - keeping the bar realistic :.)
  8. thanks much, makes sense... then I want a short scale dread with 1.75 nut (jumbo reissue does the trick but have never been able to try one and I'm wary of the neck shape being comfortable, but if anyone is looking there's a rockin' deal on reverb right now for $2550 (no affiliation, haven't seen one that low before). wondering out loud - was there ever a bird or cw with 1.75 nut?).
  9. There's lots of J45s - and I'm betting you got a good one. There are different ones, (different, not necessarily better) but as 75H mentioned, interrogate yours and see what you would like. IMO a J45 standard (sitka over mahogany) is kind of the central reference point, and then other guitars get measured against it. Not better - just the starting point (but I think it is perfect). I'd like to have a walnut guitar, it's on the list so be sure to enjoy yours!
  10. hi all - does anyone have opinions with respect to playing acoustic slide and the scale length of a guitar, just out of curiosity was wondering if one lent itself more to slide or not. thanks to all for any input. rgds - brfm
  11. Bummer it happened, but getting a first hand experience with a PRS should soften the blow. I guess with respect to fixing it vs not - if it's as much as a new one to fix it, unless it was your holy grail, I would see if I could finagle replacing it with a new one.
  12. I got my J45 from Wildwood, very happy with the experience, price and result. If I was to do it again, and was looking to buy new w/o playing it, I would look at Wildwood and Fullers (if they still do Gibby's)
  13. This is the biggest thing I appreciate about the streaming music stations like Pandora and Google play. You put in a musician / song and they build playlists.... you can get a view into a whole music type with not too many commutes - uses data though, which I don't know what it is, but I do know I am the one that pays for it.
  14. Right about 38 seconds into the second vid they start to really rock it IMO... good stuff.
  15. There's a weekly job club session at a mid size library I go to about 50 minutes from my house. I did not see albums, but they have collections of CDs I've been able to take out for the commute. I've been trying to use the time to listen to different types of music... blues, blue grass yes, but big band, crooners, ... it's nice, free, - the library offers a good service. ...and to talk to the vintage album theme, when I got rid of my collection i tried to give it to the local library, they didn't want it.
  16. I'm a late bloomer as well... 20 yrs of playing the same 5 riffs over and over at my kitchen table and only after having discovered youtube over the past 8 yrs or so have really progressed. Long path to get here, but I have got to the point where I play stuff and say 'hey that's really cool I'd like to play that for someone'. So to put that into practice, in the past year I started going to open mics. Love it, takes the playing part to a whole new level and adds some fun social activity to things. So sorry for the rambling intro, but just wondering Retired, do you have aspirations of playing out... can I nudge you along 🙂
  17. DADGAD, hmmm ... apologies for the tangent, but I've been playing 'rock on' by David Essex in DGDGAD... there's one line that crosses teh low G that just doesn't sound right, I'll have to try yours. And then I'll give some time to one of Doug Young's projects, see if I can add to 'jingle bells'
  18. No we didn't, not quite sure what you mean by this. If talking about the effect 'compression'... I would feel his guitar had more of a natural compression than mine (based on his played with everything more blended together, and I believe I've got more articulation between notes / strings on mine). Apologies if i misinterpreted, should see him again in a couple weeks so will pay a little more attention.
  19. I just learned jingle bells for a family gathering in a couple of weeks...
