Playing in a band

I used play in some bands back a long time ago. Do I jam...ya but not very often anymore. My classification of a musician is , somebody that loves music and loves to learn. You guys do know that playing an instrument actually makes you learn other things easier. Fender did a study on it a few years ago and they found that kids who played instruments while in school actually learned a lot better than non players.

So if you love to play any instrument, you are a brainchild !!! lol.

One other point.... it's all about the love of the music, not the money !!! Money would just be a bonus lol

I'm in a Band that Gigs.....Finally!!!!

It took a year of serious practice before we could start playing for free. There's a Chinese restaurant up here that lets you set up in the bar, but you have to charge at the door and advertise and all that. Then we'd volunteer for civic functions and (I'm sorry to say) a couple Memorials for locals that we lost this year.

There's phone call after phone call to noncommittal Bar Owners and Managers.......,"We're booked up for the next Year, but keep calling back."

So, about a year and a half after starting this project, learning enough tunes to cover 6 sets (you usually only need 4, but Variety is extremely important if you want call backs) we're finally gettin some paying gigs. We did 4 night at the beginning of the month, we have another lined up this weekend and the promise of more in Feb.

Then you have to Deliver when you get to the gig. Simply Put, you don't have to deliver in your living room. That's not putting down anyone who loves the guitar and plays in their living room or garage with no intention of gigging, but there is an accomplishment beyond the mechanics of the instrument that any musician can't help but be proud of.

That's a lot of work and dedication, so it's little wonder that a Gigging Musician's ego will tend to inflate, and the up and coming musician who wants to Gig will have a bit of reverence for those who have accomplished it.

And from that seed, a Gigantimungus Ego might grow. But that Ego can undo the very accomplishment that enabled it.

Excellent news and inspiration, FM! I know how much you were looking forward to Big Bear. glad to hear it's the beginning of something. Mind boggling schedules and non-stop head-trips notwithstanding, it's a load of fun when you can do it. Hope it has some long legs, bro'. [-(

Thanks Cruzn!! It's very rewarding and a lot of fun. Hopefully this spring will bring a few more dates in outlying cities and eventually the holy grail of the Inland Empire...........An Indian Casino...LOL! kidding but not. Those Casinos pay out the nose and give great percs.

So... help me out here...

...the gist of this thread is that some folks seem to think that if you aren't a gigging musician, and you buy a guitar, you're somehow ruining the guitar market for everyone?

So... I started playing guitar in 5th grade... but didn't gig until 7th grade.

The logic here says I should have waited until I was gigging as a guitar player before buying a guitar, right?

Hmmm....

So... the last band I was in was "in the garage" for over 2 years.... I couldn't beg them to play out. Would it be ok for me to have bought a guitar then? I did... I needed a back up, but I didn't know I had to be gigging first.

I bought my Les Paul after YEARS of not playing at all... did I screw up all y'alls guitar prices?!?

I am SO sorry, guys... especially you folks that don't own a Gibson yet... if I'd only known the rules.

Btw... found a drummer. Same deal as me, quit for years and is getting his chops back.

Can I buy another guitar now?

And does this work the same for amps?

I'm so confused now....[-(

No no no.

The gist is Bluemoon was commenting on how certain unnamed people seem to think if your not a working musician your beneath them.

Right. Beneath them and not worthy of owning a Gibson or engaging in any guitar or gear-related threads.

This is my 3,000 post. I guess I should have kept my trap shut for the past 2,999 posts because I don't gig.

And as a pre-warning: If any specific names appear in which this thread is aimed at a specific individual, this thread is done.

If a member feels they are a better musician than others because of their experience level, or current status as a working musician, then so be it. However, the members that feel this way will not be allowed to belittle the Gibson Forums in lieu of their lofty stance.

Certainly this type of subject matter is a two-way street, and I'll assume that most here know how to maneuver around this subject matter without any moderation intervention.

Thanks for your cooperation.#-o

Oh.

Nevermind.

But that's true... the guy playing on a street corner with his case open for tips beats me in my living room.

The larger the venue' date=' the greater the triumph. There has to be some objective scale to measure success as a musician.

Gate receipts, records sold... these ARE the things we judge musicians by. Donald Trump beats Kid With Lemonade Stand. It's the American way, no?

The issue is, we take it personally... as in "He's treating me like I'm a nobody because I'm in my living room."

If you take it out of music, and put it into any other field.... "He won't take my surgical advice just because I'm a self taught amateur...." it gets a lot easier to see the point.

But it's all good, see. We get the last laugh. Let's face it... those that gig for a living ARE doing it for the money. It's a cool thing, getting paid to play guitar. So it behooves them to make as much money as they can... [i']just like in any other job.[/i] So if all goes well, they will eventually break big, and we'll get to hear them on the radio. Of course, we'll ALL want to buy the new CD of someone we know from the Forum... so we'll even help them become more profitable!

Then, when they're rich, we can sit around and b!tch about how they've sold out and become commercial, and aren't as good and pure as they used to be in those "basement tapes" from when they were in their living rooms.....

Lookahere...if you're a sickle-ist, there's them that thinks the sun rises and sets on Brand X and you ain't squat if that ain't your ride. It's only one brand that gets that rap but in truth the mentality is prevalent among riders of non-Milwaukee badges, too. Or if you don't ride in the rain, you ain't real. Or if you don't ride 1000 miles non-stop a couple times a year, you ain't real. Or if you wear synthetics instead of leather, you ain't real. It's all BS bsflag.gif

Truth is, if you ain't been ridin' more than 45 years, you ain't squat. chopper_smilie.gif

Same stuff if you're into cars, boats, hang-gliders, horses, gold teeth, trophy-wives, amplifiers, clothes, body type, hair-style...you name it, someone does the slice-and-dice into sub-genres and classes for the sole purpose of exclusion. Gotta feel good about ourself somehow.

But, if you don't let someone else define you, it's not a problem. At least not for you. #-o It's not important what someone calls you, what's important is what you answer to.

i respectfully ask a hypothetical question: if this thread was aimed at someone in particular, and i'm not saying it was, why would the thread be canned if a name was mentioned? that hardly seems like a two-way street, especially given some posts i have seen concerning this very subject from the opposite point of view.

just sayin'
