What 5 guitars would you buy if you had the cash?

We can always dream, huh? For me, if I had a few thousand to spend on guitars I would buy:

1) Gibson 336

2) Gibson 339

3) Elitist Sheraton

4) St. Blues Bluesman II

5) Gibson LP DC Pro (another one). Damn, I love the one I have.

These choices not only represent my desires but take into consideration the guitars I now have. For instance, an elitist LP custom would be on this list if I didn't already have one.

I didn't deliberately limit them to Gibson/Epiphone products. It just worked out that way. I admit to a huge bias toward Gibson & Fender, & I pretty much have the Fenders I want.

How about you guys? What 5 would you buy?

I don't know why but I'm on this semi-hollow/hollow body thing.

D'Angelico New Yorker

335

White Falcon

Santana PRS

...well, can only think of four at the moment, but I would like to get my '85 Yamaha SG2000 back. One I really wish I never sold.

I would first of all set a budget of around $10,000 so it wouldn't get too terribly out of hand.

- D'Angelico NYSS in Violin finish - $2,595 street

- Gretsch G6128T-DSV in black with stained mahogany- $2,450 street

- Gibson SG Supreme '57 Humbuckers in fireburst - $1,999 street

- Gibson Les Paul DC Pro in natural - $1,699 street

- Gibson Les Paul Studio Premium Plus in transparent amber - $1,599 street

Total - $10,342

Unlimited cash?

1. 1957 Strat, Seafoam Green (nicely worn, if I could find one, but not "worn out")

2. John Lennon Gibson Les Paul Junior

3. Gibson ES-339

4. Martin D-28 Authentic (the $32000 model)

5. A Custom Shop Telecaster, in a nice "ocean blue" with blue pickguard, gold hardware... basically what I saw on a Fender Custom Shop calendar I had last year.

Not to abandon Epiphone, but if you had an unlimited amount of money, would you waste it on a $600 guitar, or go for something incredibly expensive?

4) Rickenbacker 4001 bass/12-string doubleneck (the one they custom made for Geddy Lee)

5) Fender Rosewood Tele

2) Deusenberg Outlaw

3) John Lennon Junior

5) any guitar in JerryMac's collection

Well' date=' thank you kindly.

2) Alvin Lee 335

Damn, I forgot all about Big Red!!! Well, I thought about an ES-345 or ES-355, but I was looking at things that were different than my usual style guitars. But the Alvin is one cool axe!!!

I'll never forget I'm Going Home in the Woodstock movie. Blew me away!!!

One day, early to mid '70s as I remember, I went past the local movie theater one afternoon. It was Easter week, and they were having an afternoon matinée of Woodstock instead of the featured movie Harry & Tonto. Well, I had nothing to do that afternoon and I hadn't seen Woodstock in a couple of years, so I got on line with all these High School students waiting to see it. I made my way up to the ticket booth and said "One please." The young girl selling the tickets, about 17 and very pretty, looked up at me and said, "Oh no, sir. We're not showing Harry & Tonto this afternoon, come back at 7:00pm."

I've spent much of my adult life finding ways to satisfy my wishes and whims in guitars and as a result have owned most of my "dream" guitars and seemingly a lot of other peoples' dream guitars as well. I've found that often the dreams out-weigh the realities or is it the other way 'round. I once wanted a Gibson Everly Brother's J-180 more than anything...then I got one and found those huge "That Girl" pickguards pretty much killed the acoustic tone of the instrument-sounded like it was made of wet cardboard tonally but looked cool as hell. I also wanted a '50's Les Paul and ended up with a '57/'58 Custom. I hated the neck (Nellie Fox Louisville Slugger for anyone who happens to be familiar with Nellie's bat-which was huge -guess that really dates me huh?) and the pickup switching options (you can't just re-wire a switch or anything without greatly diminishing the value in the vintage arena) and after owning it and hardly playing it for nearly twenty years I sold it and have had little regret other than I wished I had waited another year because after I did sell it the prices on them really did a spike upward. In the early 70's my best friend and band mate bought a brand new '74 Stratocatser and said that I should too. I didn't care for the look of the CBS headstock so I got an older one second hand..actually I traded a then-two week old Gibson L6S ($400) for a '57 and then traded that back to the original owner for a '62 because I didn't care for the "V" neck on the '57...and then discovered I'm *not* a rosewood fretboard Strat guy so it sits in its case waiting for the day it gets sold (probably by my daughter since it's willed to her). It has great vintage vibe and it's really an ego boost to have people swoon over it. I own about a dozen Starts and the '62 falls in about the middle of pack as far as being a favorite- a black 90's American Standard named "Rebekah", not "Blackie", lol (value-<$500) made from the parts of three American Standard Strats is tied for favorite with my $3.5K custom shop Mary Kaye so go figure-your dream can be any guitar at any level. Another tricked out sonic blue '96 American Standard (<$600) comes in at second ahead of two other custom shop Strats. So, you see, since I'm basically a Stratocaster player I'm not going to find a "dream" Strat since I already have the one...or two and it ain't always about how much they cost. Acoustic guitars are another story. I'll go along with the idea that you can find GREAT electric guitars at nearly any price level but with acoustic guitars, better tone costs more money so my dreams do lean more toward acoustics that are far out of my reach. My five guitars therefore are things I've never owned but have always lusted for or have been curious about, not necessarily so and so's personal guitar or some iconic vintage deal...but one or two are..well.. maybe all of them are.

1. 1930 Martin OM-45 Deluxe-

2. 1937 Gibson Advanced Jumbo-

3. 1923 Gibson Lloyd Loar L-5-

4. 1939 Martin D-28-

5. 1945 P.A. Bigsby Merle Travis Model-

...and Al's your uncle.

Haven't got a clue !

If I ever found just the right '50s RI Strat in trans white ash...I'd have to buy it. But generally guitars find me.

I pick them up, play them and either bond with them or not.

If I get lucky something in a finish I really like comes home with me. Sometimes the finish has to grow on me...as with my Surf Green Strat. I used to hate that colour but now I quite like it.:-({|=
