A lot of the guys mentioned have been my heroes for years! They're regular stars within any selfrespecting guitarscene. Steve Lukather' date=' Gary Moore, Brian May, Carlos Santana? Come on!

Maybe we should define it differently? If there's more than one video on YouTube they don't qualify as under-rated. :-)

Definately agree with Holdsworth and Buchanan as under-rated tho.

I could add a 100 but I'll add Adrian Vandenberg and Steve Hunter.[/quote']

I think it depends on your point of view, I guess.. I was going to mention Alan Holdsworth, but I consider him to be highly recognized.. Can't believe I didn't think of Roy Buchanan, though!

I think there is thousands of unknown guitarists as good as guitar heroes we know.

I have seen so many unknown guitarists that are living in night club and private partys' date=' that I would qualified virtuose, but for a lot of different reasons, they stay in the dark... I would even say that the best guitarist in the world is probably an unknown 18 yo kid of Australia or a 50 yo Canadian or a 43 yo japanese...who knows...[/quote']

I agree...and they are getting their inspiration from listening to current and past guitar heroes.

Getting better exposure is a matter of practicing every day to get better at it,

juggling personal priorities, day jobs, week end gigs, personal finances/obligations, family, etc,

and of course raising enough money to cut a single demo (or CD these days).

Even then, it depends on what genre of music he is playing.

It's very hard these days to get any kind of recording contract unless you are already an established artist.

Most of the popular "music" these days is more "flash" than talent. This seems to generate more sales than a virtuoso

guitarist, unless of course, he plays with a recognized band and can sing as well as play. With the advent of

affordable home technology and a web cam, some of the better ones can, at least, get onto YOUtube.t doesn't

generate any revenue for them, but at least they'll get critiques on personal technique..if you can accept the bad

comments along with the good.

I have to agree with the other Danny Gatton nominations! He really was a master of the guitar and could play any style! There are many many others too! Such is the joy of our hobby; it never grows old!

Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers band. The reason I nominate him is that Duane got all the accolades as a guitar hero while Dickey played most of the riffs. If it's not played on a slide, it was usually Dickey Betts that you heard on the record. If it's in the right channel, it's Dickey, left channel...Duane. Uninformed listeners all thought that Duane played it all, not. Dickey deserves the credit. Not to discredit Duane, he was a great axeman, but credit is due to his bandmate who wore the gold off his LP playing all those hot licks we love to listen to.

I checked the "favorite guitarists" thread before adding Steve Lukather to this one. He was not mentioned there.

In fact, I searched the entire site and no returns for Lukather. He would seem to qualify as relative unknown, or another possibility is that no one likes him enough to have mentioned him. O:)

Along with the mentioned above:

I really like:

Steely Dan's Guitar Maestro: Walt Becker

The Cure's: Robert Smith Guitar and Simon Gallup Bass. These guys have created a very unique sound, even when unplugged.

The Cult's: Billy Duffy

Phamous Phaces: Jessie Ruggles

Who in your opinion is a guitarist worthy of greater recognition but is not generally thought of as a guitar hero ?

Hmmmmmmm O:) I'm going to go out on a limb' date=' here, and nominate Dave Edmunds and Brian Setzer - great guitarists if you love traditional rock'n'roll/rockabilly.

...............................

Elvis Costello

..........................

Hmmmmmm:-k As a long time Costello fan (since his first release and have seen him live several times), I agree he deserves recognition, but much moreso for his songwriting skills than his guitar skills - he has in the past "lovingly" referred to himself as "little hands of concrete." As much as I love the man's work, "guitar" is about the last thing that comes to mind when I think about or hear EC. He's adequate, but nothing memorable, IMHO.

Hmm... 3 out of the 4 I thought of were Tele guys O:) . Just to add some Epiphone content to my selections, Vince Gill is a pretty fair country picker. If you can get past the intro, I found this clip of him on a Casino covering the Beatles with some other guys you might know.

I thought Jeff Baxter did most of Steely Dan's more notable guitar work?

Barry Bailey from Atlanta Rhythm Section is one of the tastiest overlooked players of all time IMHO. Listen to his licks on "Spooky" for example he goes from clean jazzy octave stuff to squalking overdrive at the drop of a hat. He's a very lyrical player....I love his tone.

Gatton was overlooked early on,but since his death I think his status is up there with any of the great Tele players.....all 3 of the Hellicasters are monsters too!
