A buddy of mine and I have taken a few first steps in trying to be a "virtual band". We both have the same music production software and we can swap files easily enough to just add tracks to eachothers riffs.

Using Dropbox makes it pretty easy to share the files instantaneously, and the recipient simply imports the tracks to their application. We've tested it once and it's worked, it's just a matter of sitting down and finding the time to do it. I'm also using the little Notepad program to write some points about files I've recorded for him to reference; such as key, chords/progressions, etc. I place this file with the audio tracks in the Dropbox folder and he can access it at will.

Thanks a lot bud!! Those first two never got recorded (on video) properly, sadly enough. :( We did do some "jam" recordings which sound a lot better...

Long and Winding Road: http://www.box.net/shared/flg1yseiv9 (Not a Beatles cover)

Croc Hunter: http://www.box.net/shared/6mk7co9kcg

And here were the three tracks we recorded officially before we broke up if anyone wants em...

Number 2, "Baby What's New". I was the bass player, and backing vocals. It was originally released as a 45 back in 1966.

Well, poop. The tracks on the Amazon page aren't playable/previewable. Wanted to give it a listen! I love that 60s garage stuff.

Actually, collaborating, perhaps a better word, isn't so difficult. Just make a track with drums (use loops or what have you), put some bass, do your own lead or rhythm, andy leave spots open for the other person to jam on. Either upload the unfinished track for the other player(s) to download and put their parts in, or send a cd via snail mail.

I collaborated many times doing this back in 03. If it wasn't hard to do then, I think it would be a breeze now. We used Acid Pro mixing software and I'm sure you can use just about anything to add parts to a tune.

As a matter of fact, I participated in a guitar competition using this method at acid planet.com. A guy recorded the backing track and we downloaded it and added the solos. I placed second place, which wasn't too bad considering I recorded on my cheap computer and the guy who won had a professional studio... Lol. But I digress. Anyway, I thought I would throw that out there, and it could be done for fun, as I'm sure was the intention. Let's see if any of this comes to fruition and and what interesting combos turn out.... Cheers.
