  1. Yes, I agree to reversible mods, and keeping EVERYTHING that gets taken off of it with the guitar (not only the pickups). If you think at all that you may sell it in the near future, a "wholly original" SG will go for more one that is modified and with the original components. People LOVE "all original". The prices of 1980s guitars are definitely going up; even the prices of bad Les Paul copies (and the 1980s was littered with them) are getting obscenely decent prices. As for me, I have a '79 SG Standard that I did modify (reversibly) with new pickups as the guitar came to me used with the treble pickup changed out for an original Dimarzio SD that did not pair well with the stock neck pup. That was a great mod for me -- something I wish I did earlier than I did. I also at that time replaced one of the tone knobs with a phase-out micro-switch (and wiring both pups with a single tone knob), but that was a mod I wish I did not do (even though it came out fine and was reversible with no new holes created). The bottom line is that mods can be very good, especially if it is something you feel the guitar needs. Just think before you act, and don't do any drilling no matter what.
  2. $3000 -- It looks to be a GC limited edition (?) "This Gibson Les Paul includes a mahogany body, bound flame maple neck, and a bound quilt maple top. Locking Grover tuners are standard, with an Asymmetrical shape neck. It comes with a set of Gibson ’57/Super ’57 humbuckers, and modern weight relief. It has push/pull volume controls that either split the humbucker to single-coil or taps the humbucker pickup. It's your choice via a dip switch in control cavity. The Rhythm tone control is a push/pull phase switch. And the Treble tone control in single-coil mode toggles between the inner and outer coils. Includes hard-shell case." https://www.guitarcenter.com/Gibson/Les-Paul-Blood-Moon-Satin-Quilt-Top-Limited-Edition-Electric-Guitar-Black-Cherry-1500000327103.gc?rNtt=gibson les paul satin&index=3
  3. Personally, I would go with the '60s version, but they are both great -- you can't go wrong with any type of Les Paul Standard. You likely have seen the write ups on them, so you know the differences between the guitars. There is really no opinion here that should sway you on which to get. Just play them and see which one chooses you. More importantly, please let us know which you choose, and post some pictures.
  4. I, too, was never a big Brian-era fan. I never bought any post-Bon albums (not even Back In Black) even though I enjoyed hearing them and went and saw them live a few times with Brian (great shows). That all being said, this recent album is good solid effort of catchy rock and roll. Good for them. Probably a few of them could use the cash, too.
  5. It looks like the the start of the cure.
  6. The Nearly Human and 2nd Wind albums are favorites of mine. I have not heard the A Cappella album, but will check it out. Thanks.
  7. GC gift cards are likely in a "use it or lose it" mode with no clear timeframe on when "lose it" will kick in. And it is black-Friday season to boot. Yeah, it is unlikely I am going to get through November without adding a new Gibson to the fold, and all my old GC gift cards exercised. There is nothing better than "having" to buy a new guitar ...
  8. Okay, that makes more sense. How long have they been doing that?
  9. Both guitars have the 490 pickups , large batwing pickguard, and come with a gig bag . The current 2020 "Standard 61" seems just like the 2018 SG Standard with 61 pickups, small pickguard w/ pickup rings, and also comes with a HSC. If it were me (and it isn't ...), I would seriously consider getting a nice condition used 2018 SG Standard for (going price) around $1100 because of the pickup difference, the small pickguard, and the case. https://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Gibson/2018-SG-Standard-Solid-Body-Electric-Guitar.gc
  10. The guitar comes with a PLEK'd setup from Gibson. So, Guitar Center is verifying/tweaking that setup on their own? Is this GC setup a "just for Gibsons" thing? I can't imagine that occurring (with a picture no less) on any guitar you get from GC. The whole thing seems odd to me. That being said ... that is a FABULOUS guitar.
  11. Cool guitars ... $900 (no case or bag included) In some of the unofficial descriptions, they have said mahogany body with a maple cap. To be clear, it is a mahogany body with a maple veneer. There are lots of nice features here with a lot to like. Made in China ... surprise, surprise.
  12. A lot of those home-spun tape jobs from that era were lacquered over. So if yours is not, and you can just remove the tape, then consider yourself lucky. Please post back with what you decide to do along with the resultant pics. Great guitar, man -- regardless of what you end up doing.
  13. Back in 2009, yes we did. But not now in 2020, we do not. But -- in all likelihood -- we will again "very shortly".
  14. Yes, pensions and 401Ks are totally different. Pensions are fairly rare these days and are often lately being "re-structured" so that the money does not run out, and are (generally) not guaranteed. Pensions are like Social Security where the money you pay goes to people receiving benefits right now, and your eventual benefits will come from those paying in at that time -- this is a bad model for companies that are large but dwindling businesses (like in the nuclear power industry such as Westinghouse). The nice things about pensions is that they pay out until you die. Typically the re-structuring changes are to vary/lower the payouts based on when you want to start getting payments, and if you want to pass it on to your spouse, etc. Then there are 401k's which are supposed to be solely YOUR money and 99% of the time, they are. But if the company administers the 401K themselves, there are cases where the money gets borrowed/stolen and sometimes completely lost (people usually will be going to jail if that happens and is hugely rare). If your 401K is administered by an outside financial house (e.g., Schwab, Fidelty, etc.) then you have pretty much 0% chance of it being violated in any way. There are also cases where companies have retirement plans that are based in company stock where the value becomes close to nothing wiping out retirement plans' value (remember Enron?).
  15. Also, didn't SG Standards go from HSC to gig bags at some point? I am not sure the exact year.
  16. For decades, Les Pauls were always more expensive then SGs. That seemed to make sense as Les Pauls were a more involved guitar with the carved maple top, body binding, more wood, etc. I bought my '79 SG Standard back in the day because I could not afford a Les Paul. Even now, a SG Standard is $1000 less than a Les Paul standard. Les Pauls and SGs are totally different animals though -- both are AWESOME, but very different.
  17. It's a catchier tune than I remember the Rock Or Bust tunes being, so that's good ...
  18. Oakland Raiders helmet signed by: Daryl Lamonica "mad bomber", Bo Jackson, Tom Flores SB XV & XVIII, Tim Brown, Ted Hendricks HoF "Mad Stork", Jim Otto HoF, Art Shell HoF, Kenny Stabler, Mike Haynes HoF, Willie Brown HoF, Jim Plunkett SB MVP, Ray Guy, George Blanda HoF, Fred Biletnikoff HoF, Mike Haynes HoF, Marcus Allen HoF I got all of the signatures myself, meeting each of the above. Freddie B and Lamonica are the nicest dudes. There are a few of the above that are in HoF but don't have a "HoF" inscription because they were not in at time of signing.
  19. Eddie Van Halen was so far BEYOND being just "an influential guitar player". Before Eddie, the heavy guitar players at that time were Pat Travers, Ted Nugent, Buck Dharma, Michael Schenker, and the boys from Thin Lizzy. Then ... 1978 arrived with "Eruption" from Van Halen I. I still remember sitting around the turntable and hearing it for the first time. "What the efff was that????" There was NOTHING even close to anything like it back then. Nothing. "Play that again, dude. I need to hear that again." To say that the musical topography had just been completely flipped on its head would be an epic understatement. Oh, and let's go beyond his ridiculous musicianship and guitar playing for a second. Let's not forget his incredible songwriting abilities. The reason Van Halen was epic was because of his SONGS. What a difference from Ratt , Dokken, and Motley Crue to Van Halen -- you need a rocket ship to cross that wide musical chasm. Oh, and then there was the showmanship. I still remember being dumbfounded at many VH gigs thinking , "How can he play so amazing and be able to run around and perform like he is not even playing????" He was always moving -- running, sliding on the floor, jumping against his amps -- all the while playing the guitar at the absolute highest level. It was ridiculous what he could do. And for the people that never saw him live? I feel sorry for you. This dude was a national treasure, and a complete force of nature. Purely AWESOME. RIP, Eddie Van Halen ... You will be SORELY missed.
  20. I thought the musical production was quite good -- whoever they had turning the knobs seemed to know what they were doing. It almost sounded like an unreleased-for-very-good-reasons Marillion "bonus track" track. To me ... Music > Video
