fortyearspickn
When your friend dies, owing money and his only 'asset' is an over the top guitar less than 1% of the population would be interested in buying, his kids will have to deal with his bad choices. Probably sell the guitar for half its value to someone on this forum. Dibs.

I mean, I have never heard anyone express any concern over the expense of a guitar until this thread. Ya'll are forgettin' about life insurance which would likely cover his 50k debt if it wasn't already paid down at the time of death. He has a retirement that he continues to pay into, I would like to think that it wouldn't get depleted during retirement but who knows....His children or widow should keep the instrument and be able to get by without getting rid of it. If not, they should know the relative value of it and not let it go for far less than what it's worth. But, if they are living pay check to pay check and don't bother to seek reasonable value for an item before letting it go, what are ya gonna do from your grave??? jedzep
Aha! I think you are your friend's wisest advisor, and he should go no farther than you to figure it out. There's nothing more beautiful than a plain Jane, broken in J.

And study diligently. You can't build wealth properly if you are carrying debt. He has 2 kids in elementary school and is going to dump his entire savings AND checking accounts on a guitar? It's a shame they don't teach capitalism in school, rather than socialism. Actually, our leaders should study up on these principals as well, has anyone seen the debt clock lately? We're running out of other people's money. Who is this Dave Ramsey you speak of, I have never heard of him. Is he one of those get rich fast in real estate with "no money down" cats??? RBSinTo
afishynado, Why should it matter to your "friend" what advice anyone here gives him? He will do what he does, regardless of how good or bad, selfless or selfish that advice is, so what is the point of his question? Will he abide by the majority opinion of the suggestions made, and possibly change his mind, or is he merely seeking affirmation of a decision already made? With respect, I for one, don't even understand what the point of this thread is. RBSinTo Edited December 22, 2022 by RBSinTo

It would be much easier if you posted your number so I could just call you! LMAO!!!! But on a serious note, you said "will he abide by the majority opinion?" well brother I hope not. What'd I miss? This guitar is dressed up, I think the first one commemorated Gibby's 100 year anniversary, so it's understandable to me. Besides the Monarch, to what others did he attach what you refer to as gaudy bling? Edited December 22, 2022 by afishynado

He surely understands the pure geometry of a great guitar build, he just adds a flair I don't appreciate. Hell, I even hate all pick guards, and pull them whenever prudent. They muddle up the naked beauty.https://www.facebook.com/RenFergusonCo/ Edited December 23, 2022 by jedzep

My wife and I did the Dave thing. We got out of debt, partly due to him and partly because my mother passed away, and so did my father in law. So we inherited some money and a paid off house. We had the cash to clear our debt, and go into retirement mode. My wife does not work, and I work PT at Home Depot, so we don't spend 24/7 up each others arses. I don't think anyone from back in the day put their kids through college selling off their rare Beanie Baby Collection, like they thought they would. Edited December 23, 2022 by Sgt. I must have been standing on the line handing out peace of mind rather than that handing out the ambition to climb the ladder of financial success. I guess I am lucky though in that my wife has enough of that to cover us both. But just the other day I was rummaging through boxes in the basement looking for something (which as is typical I could not find) when I ran across two of Dave Ramasay's books which reminded me my wife went through a phase where she was an acolyte. While I cannot say it had anything to do with her reading those books the only debt we have remains the house mortgage. So, while I can easily afford a $7K guitar it ain't going to happen. I am just as happy playing a block letter logo Harmony Sovereign H1260 as any guitar in the house. It took me a while but I finally got it through my thick head that no matter what guitar is in my hands I just sound like me. Murph
I'm not "totally" committed to his system, but I (we) did follow "some" of his advice. Mostly to live beneath our means, save and invest and don't finance stupid stuff. It's served us well and I'm glad we listened to his radio show often, back in the day.
