Skynyrd fans

I understand Skynyrd's place in rock & roll history, BUT.... since 10/20/77 they have been nothing but a "tribute" band to themselves. I know a lot of members here are not old enough to have known the "real" Skynyrd, but I was there from their first release. Is there anybody still alive from the original band?

When I played in bar bands I've had to play Freebird, Gimme Three Steps, Sweet Home Alabama, and Simple Man so many times I can't count, and that was when they were new songs. Their really great songs get completely forgotten. It's way past time they signed up for the casino "tribute" tour.

Here's a pic I took right before the plane crashed:

I'm pretty sure Gary Rossington is still alive.

I think Ed King is too, but I don't think he is playing with them currently. I just don't keep up with them any more.

They are one of the bands I built my early chops on.... or stole licks from (however you want to say it).

Allen Collins was always my favorite Skynyrd member and I was so saddened when he had that car accident and died a few years later. He is very much missed. Favorite Skynyrd song is Free Bird of course.

Their first album cover was a picture of the band on what was Main Street in Jonesboro, Ga. my hometown. Skynrd was huge for us in the 70's and into the 80's also. I always enjoyed Mississippi Kid, I can't remember it getting any air play, it was one of those deep tracks.

I think Gary Rossington is the only band member still alive. I believe EdKing just died a few years ago. I don't really have a favorite member of the band because they just all seemed pretty equal to me. Personally, I like the songs that never got airplay, you know, older stuff. Mr. Banker, Curtis Lowe, Am I Losing, Cottonmouth Country, stuff like that.

This is the album cover of their first album " Pronounced" . Looking off to the bands left is a railstation that was used in "Gone with the Wind"

and survived that pyromaniac Shermans march to the sea in the war of Northern Aggression. Always liked this tune also.

Tough to narrow down but here are a few off the top of my head.

Things Going On

Needle and the Spoon

Poison Whiskey

Call Me The Breeze

I've Been Your Fool

As a guitar player it's hard to pick a favorite. Gary, Allen, Ed and Steve are all fantastic players. But I have to take a moment to say that in my opinion Billy Powell was one of the most underated keyboard players in rock. Truck Driving Man anyone? Dang.. add that to my list above.

Great picture! Man would I have loved to been there! I totally agree with all of your comments about the new and old bands. Once Gary Rossington dies itll just be a cover band [lol]...

Thank you all for your input and interesting info! My favorite band member was Allen Collins and unfortunately I was never alive to go see him live...
