Losing Lennon

CNN will aire a special called Losing Lennon Countdown to Murder. I don't know how I feel about the subject matter of recounting the immediate time before the murder but I'll probably watch it just because it is about John who is my all time favorite guitarist/songwriter. I just can't believe it was 30 years ago. Where were you when you found out and did it have an impact on you?

I fell asleep in an apartment I shared with my brother the night before without hearing the news. I woke up the next day to my alarm radio and they were playing non stop Beatles. My brother came in from an all nighter studying for his finals and I said "David, it's gonna be a great day, they're playin nothin but Beatles". He said, "Phillip, sit down".

I prefer to remember October 9th...his birthday. Not the day he was murdered!

That's just to depressing, for me. He was a witty, funny, man. I didn't always

agree, with him, politically...but, I did like the fact that he was putting it

out there. We need all sides, represented...agreed with, or not. He was no

"God"...just a human, with all those frailties. It really says more about us,

than him, that anyone would follow any musician, celebrity, politician. It's all

a bit of a "con!" How much so, depends on where you are mentally, and what you

believe or don't believe. But, I loved his music...Beatles, and on his own.

And, in that alone, I miss him!

Very well said CB. I loved the Beatles in the beginning because my sisters who were (are) 10 years older than me loved them and I thought they were so cool. When I became a guitar player in my teens I realized how original the music was and have always been a huge fan. Have to admit that besides imagine and cold turkey and mind games and Momma, I didn't love his post Beatles stuff but the earlier stuff with his nasaly voice, just love it.

I am not and never have been a beatles fan but I liked Lennon as a solo artist. 30 years and still as popular

I`m just the opposite. When he became a solo artist , he had lost alot on his voice. He was a better singer in the 60`s. I think he wrote better songs too. I know Imagine is a great song and John sings it well , but I think he sounded better in the 60`s. If you listen to This Boy , he couldn`t of pulled that off in the 70`s. K

Thanks for the information. When are they airing it?

Sat & Sun this weekend. 8pm Pacific, not sure about the other time zones. Not sure if it's a two part or a one hour rerun on Sunday.

I've got the DVR set. Like CB, I'd rather not dwell on that day, but I'm curious to see what they do with this.

Well, depending on how they depict it (I don't have "TV," so I won't get to see it),

I can't imagine anyone, who loved The Beatles, and John in particular, that was around

in their/his "heydays," wanting to have to go through that terrible night, again?!!

I suppose, to those who weren't emotionally invloved, or were not yet born, there is some

"historical," interest...beyond mere morbid curiosity? Don't know...

On a more personal/emotional level...

Frankly, I don't give a damn, about Chapman's "motivations!" He, like most criminals, that

do that sort of thing, especially, is the "waste of oxygen," IMHO...

To say nothing, about taxpayer's money!

If you want to watch a great show about Lennon use the link below-

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters/episodes/lennonyc/watch-the-full-film/1722/

It has the last studio recording he did, and there wasn't a darn thing wrong with his voice. He was preparing to do a world tour, was for the first time in his life at peace with life...

Thanks Jaxson, I definitely want to see that, seems more up beat and frankly I don't have morbid curiosity about the actual murder. I don't want to see his dead body, etc.

I also agree with CB and Neocon, Chapman is a waste of oxygen, food and ... Total disgust from me.

Agree with what?

My posts disappeared...

I know, I saw that. I agreed with: Chapman shouldn't be sharing the same oxygen, Reagan's shooting was one of "those" events (was for me too), Lennon's post Beatles politics weren't embraced by many, and he did some great stuff (music writing, especially Beatles). Hope the paraphrase was close enough.

I was in my second year of marriage sitting in the back room writing new songs. When my wife came in to tell me he had just been murdered. So I wrote the words to a song and called it John.

JOHN

I was standing on the inside,

With my feelings flowing out.

I don't understand the reason,

but somewhere it's logical no doubt.

Do you feel the coldness slipping in,

As if your life is growing thin.

Please won't someone explain it to me,

this ending doesn't make any sence at all.

(refrain) My life has been for the love and the people,

I didn't have much time for my family at all.

I finally worked and got my life together,

Such an ill begining such a trecherous fall.

I found love had true meaning,

And is a feeling I've allways shared.

I tried to share those feelings,

In a way a poet only dared.

Then my life came to an abrubt ending,

In a way I couldn't see.

I loved the world and the people,

Why couldn't the people share this love with me.

(refrain) My life has been for the love and the people,

I didn't have much time for my family at all.

I finally worked and got my life together,

such an ill begining such a trecherous fall.

Time comes and time will go,

Your time will come to.

So if you have love in your heart,

Get out in the world and show it's true.

Have you ever wondered why it is,

That men that love their fellow man.

When they come out to share it,

Their life ends all to soon.

(Refrain) My life has been for the love and the people,

I didn't have much time for my family at all.

I finally worked and got my life together,

Such an ill begining such a trecherous fall.

I was standing on the inside,

With my feelings flowing out.

I don't understand the reason,

But somewhere it's logical no doubt.

It sounds like a good programme you guys have onmsp_thumbup.gif - I enjoyed his music as solo artist and of course with the Beatles!! I have heard he had some quite extreme political views certainly. There was talk he helped finance some 'controversial' organisations for example....

That doesn't sit well with me, but...

I can enjoy music to it's full, no matter what the person did, as I can compartmentalise things. PM if you want to discuss this, because music and morality is something that really interests me. I don't think the nature of the lounge would allow an uncensored debate on the subject - but please get in touch with any thoughts. It is something I studied as a postgrad - how someone can produce or even appreciate music that many would regard as beautiful or even Godly - yet can be a tyrant themselves! For example (albeit a fictional character) Hannibal Lecter msp_biggrin.gif

Exploitive.

RIP John.

BUT . . .

I'd like to see a Celebrity Boxing bout featuring Yoko vs Heather Mills.

It would be a real one legged a$ kicking contest. . . . [lol]

She wouldn't have a leg to stand on

I had a pun thread which I must find againmsp_thumbup.gifmsp_flapper.gif

This song is really Lennon's biography, written by him, told by him. Chillingly honest as only Lennon could be, he also confronts his abandonment of his son Julian, begging Julian not to do to his children what he did to him, you can hear the pain in his voice...

Great stuff Steven. Have you put it music and if so would love to hear it? That night had a big impact on you to put something like that out.

The next day when I found out, I just went to a park in Fayetteville, Arkansas where I was in college and sat there and stared into space trying to make sense out of it. Not sure if I ever did.

One of my favorite acoustic numbers with him belting it out:
