Guess the name of the song from the previous poster, write it down, then post some mysterious lyrics for the next forumite. I'll start....

If only you believed like I believed baby

Like I believed, we'd get by

If only you believed in miracles baby

In miracles, so would I

I think its "Miracles by Jefferson Starship"

I'll learn to work the saxophone

I'll play just what I feel

Drink Scotch whisky all night long

And die behind the wheel

Of course, "Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan

Thought of you as my mountaintop

Thought of you as my peak

Thought of you as everything

I've had but couldn't keep

I've had but couldn't keep

Apologies if the one above is too obscure. How about just making it an extra credit question and moving on?

Here's one I hope will be gotten more quickly:

We can never know about the days to come

But we think about them anyway

And I wonder if I'm really with you now

Or just chasin' after some finer day

Carly Simon -Anticipation

I'm not the kind to live in the past.

The years run too short and the days too fast

The things that you lean on are things that don't last

Sweet Thursday - Gilbert Street

"Mother thinks the road

Is long and lonely

Little brother thinks

The road is straight and fine

Little darling thinks

The road is soft and lovely

I'm thankful that old road

Is a friend of mine"

Yep, it's a good one alright. I used to drive over that pass quite a bit back when I lived in Texas. I always had Townes queued up in the tape deck (okay, it was a while ago) and would play that song as I crossed over the pass. Good memories

Sorry for the interruption, now back to the regularly scheduled programming. Great thread concept by the way!

Ironically, I first heard it by Gillian Welch before I heard Townes' version! Gil and Dave do an amazing version of it too. Wish I could post it somehow.

EDIT: Oh duh.....

well the air smelled like snakes we'd shoot with our pistols

Paradise-John Prine

Well you might see me tonight with an illegal smile

It don't cost very much and it lasts a long while

Won't you please tell the man I didn't kill anyone

I'm just tryin' to have me some fun

Well I sent him to ask of the owl if he's there

How to loosen a jar from the nose of a bear

That one is "The House at Pooh Corner" NGDB

No one gave it a shot.

The one below is still open.

Another John Prine song, which is "Illegal Smile".

How 'bout this one...

So, I'll give you until sunrise tommorrow, my friend

Before I come to shoot you down and bring your body in

I warn you that I do my work quite well with gun or knife

I've tracked down many a man, I've taken many a life

How about...

Gonna lay in the hot sun

and roll a big fat one

Grab my guitar and play

Nice to take a break from my remodel. I've smashed my fingers so many times I wander if I'll ever be able to play again.

The fantastic Pale Blue Eyes - When I was a kid they used it as a theme song for some anti-drug school-tv series and it always had me shivering : Sometimes I feel so happy - Sometimes I feel so sad. . .

Only several years later I came across the album and found out who was performing.

How about another verse, the group or the album title?

This is the song about a rose

or perhaps it's a song about the shadow of a rose

In the morning the apple sellers congregate on corners of their own

But you and I we sing our song about a rose or perhaps the shadow of a rose

First version of Pale Blue Eyes I heard was R.E.M.'s cover of it-- beautiful, somewhat eerie sounding. Also liked R.E.M.'s cover of Femme Fatale, and when I discovered they were both Velvet Underground songs, I began listening to them and really getting into their music, as well as reading about their Factory days and all of that.

Seems like this whole town's insane

On the 31st floor your gold plated door

Won't keep out the Lord's burning rain
