BigKahune
. More or less. The diameter from pole to pole is shorter than the diameter at the equator. A giant alien squashed it a bit. B)

rocketman
It's an oblate spheroid :P That's exactly right. This is why gravity is slightly different at the equator than the poles (called the J2 effect). Not a big deal for us on Earth but this little effect can be a nightmare for spacecraft designers. proparch
From Wikipedia: A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!" milod
Actually after I hit age 10 or 12 I began to wonder why the atmosphere and various magnetic bands and such aren't also included as what makes up "earth" by definition. It's more than just a dirty rock. m
