Really sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. Regarding your V sounding great, I can't remember ever hearing one that didn't, it must just be something about them. I can understand if you are reluctant to take the pickguard off given the advice JO'C gave you regarding the degradation of the plastic, so I think it might be worth contacting Gibson with the serial number (they'll probably want pictures of the guitar as well) to see if they can help you.

Yes, as Murph said, but I'd advise you to put a small strip of masking tape on the guitar and make an indentation with a bradawl or other pointed implement where your going to drill just to make sure the drills is not going to skid off on the lacquer.

Hi Dave and welcome to the forum. I've never tried it on my 335, but I have done it on one of my Les Pauls, so here's what I discovered. Just changing the orientation of the pickup won't get you the out of phase, but it will change the sound of the neck pickup it's a tiny change though. To do the job properly you need to remove the magnet from the pickup and reverse it, to do that you obviously have to remove the pickup, loosen the pole screws and the four screws holding the base plate on, then if you are lucky you will be able to slide the magnet out, but most likely you will need to remove the base plate. Of course, the out-of-phase thing only works with the selector in the middle position and with the volume controls at the same level. What I found was that when I put the pickup selector into the middle position the volume drop made it unusable, I wanted to use the out-of-phase sound f or lead playing ala Peter Green but the loss of volume made that impossible, the juggling of the two volume knobs really was a total pain. After a couple of weeks I changed everything back to how it started out. Of course it's up to you, but I would advise against it.

Sam, on my LesPaul with P-90s, pushing the pickup down leaves the two adjustment screws sticking out above the pickup, but I've never altered the height of them, also mine's not a Custom shop one but I wouldn't have thought that would make any difference. The pickups should push into the body if you push them down firmly enough unless the previous owner has screwed them right down (unlikly) or modified it in some way. It does make sense to push the pickup down whilst adjusting the height in order to minimise the risk of cracking the plastic.

Sam, I'm pretty sure P-90's can be adjusted for height, there should be two screws on the top of the pickup but they can easily be confused with the pole piece screws (there will be 8 screws, 6 pole piece ones and 2 height adjustment ones). Obviously, the pole piece ones will be immediately beneath the strings, have another look, you should spot the two odd one's out. The height/mounting screws are sprung, so if you press down on the pickup, against the spring you should easily identify the two your looking for.

PRS have basically adopted the design philosophy of both Gibson and Fender, as have most guitar manufacturers to some extent the Silver Sky being a rather extreme example. Personally, whenever I've played a PRS, I feel nothing and as 10PoundLester mentioned the same can be said, to some extent with Taylor acoustic. There's absolutely nothing wrong with their guitars, the build quality and setup are superb, and they're very easy to play, but could that be where the problem lies? Maybe they are just too impeccable. Every Gibson is slightly different to the next supposedly identical model, maybe that's where half of the fun is! I think sometimes things can be too perfect but maybe that's just me bearing in mind the car I drive is a Morgan with the associated hand-built imperfections, rather than teutonic perfection 🙂

Sorry to hear your sad news RCT, always rough to lose a pet, especially one that you've had for so long. Looking on the bright side, 18 years is a good innings for a cat, I'm sure he had a good life.

I'm not familiar with Rio Grande pickups but I'm assuming they are modelled on Billy Gibbons Pearly Gates? If so, it might be worthwhile looking at Cream T's Whiskerbucker pickups, apparently, he makes them for Billy: Whiskerbucker (creamtpickupsdirect.com)

Whitefang, I think that's called a Psychopath. I knew a bloke like that when I was at school, he was probably the most charming teenager you could wish to meet but he could become positively deranged at the drop of a hat.

Maybe an elderly, disabled & unsuspecting guy and a Woman are the best he can manage, might have been a different story if he tried it with a young healthy bloke. If that's his cup of Tea, I'm sure the Ukrainian army could find a place for him. People like him are just barking.

In reality, I've had it for a couple of weeks, It's a Supro Delta King 8 and I took it to the band rehearsal last night and wow, with the boost switch turned on it sounds incredible. I had to buy a used one because here in the UK they are like Hen's teeth, I couldn't find a new one but the one I did get is in mint condition. I like it so much I'm seriously considering selling my Blues Junior and getting one of the larger Supros. It's only one watt but it was more than powerful enough for band practice (we don't have a live drummer) but sadly I don't think it's powerful enough for gigs. I love the simplicity of it, just a volume, tone, master volume and the aforementioned boost button. This is the second one-watt amp I've bought, the other was a Marshall DLS1C (it's a weight thing having to carry it into the Church hall where we practice) but that was truly awful, if you turned up the gain it sounded like a swarm of angry Bees.
