Sitedrifter
My 5* uses Hercules stands and hangers exclusively. Every guitar I have looked at shows no sign of any type of damage including a 2010 model they have had since new. So I decided to purchase Hercules myself but I am still nervous so I did this http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/106286-hercules-covers/page__p__1436915__fromsearch__1#entry1436915
69tele
Now that's sweet! What brand and where did u get it? From an online store in Europe (I'm in Southern Europe) it's made by Stagg and was cheap to boot as well. Had it for a good 7 or 8 years now and still going strong
OldPlucker
Okay, I am vintage and own a vintage Rivoli that I bought new. I was reading this wondering why people are leaving their guitars on stands or hanging for weeks or months at a time. I can understand that in a store; but. an individual? Can me strange; but, I only use my guitar stands when I am using my bass guitars or planning on playing them. The rest of the time them stay in their case in a environmentally controlled conditioned space. When they go out, they ride in the passenger compartment of the car, not the trunk. This has resulted in no stand wear, no fading and no cracks in the finishes. When younger I had lots of my collectable toys and photos hanging out for people to see. I was later shocked to discover how much the air, dirt and UV had effected the goodies. Even the hardshell case is not 100% safe. My brother stored his Fender Jaguar in the case; but, foolishly it wasn't in area that was properly conditioned. Having seen a friends $3000 Gibson accoustic guitar fall off smaller stand, I switched to Hercules stands more for stability being Nitrocellulose Safe never entered my mind. I haven't checked; but, I think the EB may be the only one with the Nitrocellulose finish and when it is out, it is on the Hercules stand.
spacealf
Don't you think they ought to just make a stand for the guitar case and keep the guitar in the guitar case? A guitar case stand! Ya!
Guitar God
String Swing is supposed to be Nitrocellulose safe.
NHTom
I have a very nice Hercules stand. Seems strong rugged, etc.......but as stated above.....all mine live in cases. I use my stand while playing so that if I need to put the guitar down, it is safe, not in a position to slip off the bed, etc. It might hang on the stand for an hour or two at a time, but when I'm done for the night, it's back in the case. I'd love to have a wall full of hangers so my stuff could be out and seen, but not worth the damage to me. I'd rather deal with all the cases then have damage. Sitedrifter
I just ordered 3 custom built display cases for my Gibsons. I like to keep them out (I hang them on the wall in my spare room) but the task of dealing with humidity (or lack thereof) is a real pain. I decided to put them in display cases and maintain the humidity levels that way (much easier) all the while keep them dust free and most importantly giving me easy access to play them. LPguitarman
What you've read so far is dead right. A foam stand safe for nitro is like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.... I've posted these pics a million times, I don't mind posting them again. Mother in law cut up a cotton bath towel and sewed Velcro on it. Made the wraps and even the little pieces to wrap the stand fingers on the top. Cheap insurance. By the time stand damage is done to your finish bad enough you can see it - too late. No polishing, no crying, nothing will fix it. I have a Les Paul and a 335 that show the results of less than a year on a "good, nitro finish-safe" stand. Hard to see, it's too subtle to photograph, but it's there - and I'll always know it. Wait, What??? awe, you just ruined Christmas and Easter for me. The environmentally controlled display case is a great way to be able to show them at the same time protect them. Be careful what lighting you use, some lighting puts off UV which will damage (fade) the finish. Many quality LEDs are Museum safe.
tbonesullivan
So, since there seem to be no nitro safe rubber materials, why doesn't anyone make felt/cotton stands? I'm probably going to make one myself so I can leave my nitro guitars out for longer than 3 hours. Just seems surprising that with the amount of guitars that still use nitro, that more hasn't been done to make stands that won't kill them. I've got some stand rash on my SG supreme, which I touched up and buffed out.
