Help on choosing between two guitars.

Recommended Posts

Ok' date=' Just recieved $250 from a local venue, and $200 from my day-job. Im choosing betweeb two Epis at my local Guitar Center, a SG G-400 for $300 and a Casino for $320. I was wondering which guitar is good for the price and is there any flaws I should know about both models.[/quote']

Casino for $320 sounds like a great deal to me.

+1 on the Casino! $320 is less than half price. Naturally, your gonna want to really look this one over well and make sure its not gonna need another $300 in repairs.

dont think anyone is going to choose the sg when the casino is that price, if its in good condition.

if it is, run there now and rip it from their hands before they find out its way under priced.

the g-400 is a good starter level guitar, i love playing mine and chose it over my sheraton sometimes in band practice when i want a change but the casino is a piece of musical history.

I'd go for the Casino because

1) It's a better deal - Casinos have a higher price tag

2) The Casino is more versatile

3) I love the sound of P90s

But #2 and #3 reflect my personal tastes. And as mentioned, hollow guitars have a tendency of feeding back at high volumes (but if you are playing that loud, you are inflicting permanent damage on your ears anyway).

The P90 pickup IMHO is the best. With a touch of distortion, you can make it sound similar to a humbucker, but there is nothing you can do to make a humbucker sound like a P90.

Of course, the condition of the guitars are important as well. If the Casino is beat up and the G400 is in great shape, that might be an equalizer.

Plug them both into an amp, play them clean, and see what you like better.

Wow; two totally different guitars. I think they are both worth the price but you have to consider your style of playing when choosing. Do you like the high gain, hard rock type material ? Do you play mostly blues, jazz, or surf type material ? Alot of variables. You should play both, through the same amp, and see which sounds and feels best to you.

I know it doesn't need to be said anymore than it has already... but by looking at the guitars in your signature, it looks like the Casino would balance out your collection perfectly. You already have the LP for heavier music, but the Casino could play everything else.

Good luck with your decision!

John' date=' Paul & George...seems to me.

I hate to see Ringo neglected like that. Epiphone should have given him a Casino too. I mean, the thing is hollow after all. He could have tapped on the top with a drumstick or something. Or made it into a tambourine.

On a more serious note, I read somewhere that Ringo is the custodian of Beatle guitars. Apparently he owns John's Rickenbacker 1996 model:

And one of George's Country Gents:

the REAL Questions is ... What kind of music you play ?

Casino is Pop

SG is Rock

Here we go, again...LOL! Either guitar (or any guitar, for that matter) can play Lead, Rhythm, Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz, County, Classical, etc. It's up to the Player. Sure, some seem more suited for one or the other, and each has it's strengths, but it's the player that makes it sing, no matter the style/Genre...IMHO.

I can't get a decent blues tone out of Rickenbacker. And I can't the Telecaster bite out of anything but a Telecaster...

Other than that, I agree with you...
