60's Tribute Les Paul Studio

Hi everyone. I'm new here too but have been following your posts for a while. I ordered my Gold Top a couple of weeks ago and just got in in time ! The day after I ordered (from Guitar Center.com) I looked at the website again and the Gold Top was gone. The kid that I ordered it from told me I was getting close to the last one they had available. Like some of you others I was able to get it for 15% off so my total was $721.00. Amazing. It may not be the "real" thing but out of all the colors available I thought it looked the most realistic. Mine is supposed to ship in 2 weeks on the 21st. Can't WAIT !! Until then I'll keep checking out you lucky people who already have yours. I'm 53 years old and had a wine red LP back in the late 70's but have always wanted to have a gold top.

I had a honey burst on order, but cancelled it. The reviews I've read so far are very inconsistent. It seems some guys get a well made, good sounding guitar, and some don't. I have never owned a Gibson guitar, and the reports of inconsistent, sometimes shoddy workmanship, are the reason why. I'm going to wait and see if the reviews become more positive as more of these guitars enter the market.

Hi Rockabillybob:

I'm not a Gibson expert. Got my 1st electric (1965 SG Std.) in 1968, my 2nd was a 1959 burst, 3rd was a 80 Les Paul Heritage, 4th a 2007 Junior, and last year a Studio 50's Tribute. Call me insane, but the 50's Tribute sounds better, plays better, stays in tune better, once it's set up properly, than all of the others, and it's light enough to play for hours.

If I was being totally honest, the 1959 burst is amazing, but I'm afraid to take it out of the house, so it stays hidden in the studio.

The Tribute is so much fun to play, I've ordered the '60's tribute.

So take your time, and if possible try a few of these. It's hard for me to believe the Les Paul Jr. from 2007 was made in the same factory as the Tribute, cause they are oil and water.

Hello and welcome! I bought my first Gibson to a month ago. The "screwless" pickguard can be found here: http://bobbyleesignatureseries.com/

also a thread at My Les Paul Forum: http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/vendor-classifieds/926-screwless-pickguards.html

Hope'd it helped!

Thanks Timmy, I'll check that out. I guess my next question is, am I in danger of voiding my warranty if I install these? I guess it's not an intrusive process, but any screwing/unscrewing scares me with the warranty thing. Those bobby lee's look great, so I'm hoping not! Like I've said though, it's my first new guitar and first gibson, sooo I'm nervous!

Thanks!

Edit:

I was looking at my 60s Tribute, and since the P90s don't have any visible screws, I don't think the Bobby Lee's will work for me, unless I'm missing something. Hrm. [confused]

just to let some of you know

im having to return my honey burst.

the nut was done wrong way to low, causing the E to rub on the first fret.

also a very bad crack underneath the first fret that can cause problems later on, the fretboard doesnt look like it will hold.

i ordered 4 and so far 1 is a dub and possibly one of the gold might need to be examined by a guitar tech.

these are a great price just understand, not every single one is perfection

also underneath some of the inlays bad cracking, not good.

i will post pics later just a little upset about this, i hate returning guitars, but thats what you get with mail order.

i suggest actually looking at one before you purchase or it will be the return game for you!!

Hey all. Owner of a 50s Tribute GT... hadn't really been following what's been going on with the 60s much, but got to play one at our GC today. I prefer the neck much more than on my 50s. Are the GoldTops as tough to find as they were for the 50s? Guy at GC looked on their site while I was there and you can't order one there. Came home and saw that MF has the Gold's listed... but wasn't sure if they were going to do what they did to some last summer with the whole "sorry these aren't going to be available" nonsense. I'll have to unload my 50s first, but I don't want to do that unless I'm sure I can get a 60s in Gold.

Honey Burst, Cherry, Gold, Ebony or White?

Color wise, seems like lots of people prefer a Gold one. Out of elimination, now I’m considering getting a black one. Anyone like white? You can’t tell how many piece body those colors have. I like ones with a nice even dark fret board. This guitar is becoming more temping to buy, seems like a cool Gibson value.

Check out the below link as they have every color but GT in stock:

I'm going on Friday to my local GC. They have a Goldtop, Cherry burst and black one in stock. I'd be happy with any of the three colors - I'll focus on which is built best and sounds best, although I'm aiming for the Goldtop if it is well built. I never really wanted one before, but I'm starting to Jones for it now! wish me luck!

Well, I finally pulled the trigger. My first Gibson guitar. A cherry burst 60's Tribute Les Paul. Due to the worn finish and lack of binding, I've nicknamed it "Plain Jane". But what a sound. The P90s have that shimmer and jangle I like. (I play Gretsch guitars, Telecasters and a P90 equipped Casino and Epi ES 295 mostly.) The finish is really very nice. No sanding marks, etc. Just one little black line in the wood on the front that looks like a Sharpie mark. Out of the box, the intonation was dead on. It plays beautifully and sounds fantastic. Mine is fresh from the factory. The date on the inspection card is 02/23/11.

Wow, that is nice! Is it a one piece back? What GC?

Hi MBeshada. I ordered this one from Musician's Friend. I think it's a two piece back. My eyes detect one line where the grain appears to be different. I'm sorry, I'm not much of a wood worker. Someone with a trained eye could tell immediately. Regardless, it's a great player and sounds fantastic!

Look at the back end (edge). Any seams will show up there. Nice guitar, seams or not! Congrats!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge charlie brown. I see three seams. Here's a sound clip, if anyone's interested. It was done with a Tascam DR-07 placed about two feet from a Vox Pathfinder (with Jensen speaker.) Guitar volume knobs at about 3, amp treble and bass at about the 3:00 o'clock position.

Got my Honeyburst a few days ago from Sam Ash in NYC. Beautiful guitar, sounds great, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to exchange it. Was hesitant in-store because it's put together from FIVE pieces. The only other one in the store was a three piecer, but the finish on it was terrible. I know I should have just ordered a new one from the factory, which was given as an option, but I had a serious case of the "gotta-have-it-now" syndrome. But after getting home and really playing her up and down the neck, I noticed that from the 12th fret on the low e and up, it has a buzz so bad you can't even hear the notes. This can probably be fixed with an adjustment, but between this and the five-piece back, not to mention a couple minor but visible dings in the finish, I think I'm going to ask them to order a new one for an exchange. Was thinking about the ebony, but I've heard/read that the finish on the black models is the shoddiest looking, the guy at Sam Ash says it looks like a dirty pair of dress socks, so I guess I'll stick with the honeyburst, which is beautiful. Really peeved at having to exchange it, the thing is so amazing, but I want the best unit possible.

I just noticed my 60's Tribute GT doesn't have the chrome inserts in the Vol. and Tone knobs. Did Gibson use whatever parts they had on hand when they built them?

That's been a common complaint. Just e-mail, or call Gibson Customer Service, and they'll send you some.

Got my Gold Top yesterday.....after a restring/setup its perfect. I ordered mine from MF (I live way out in the middle of nowhere)...got a two piece body. After reading some of the posts on here about the guitars I wonder why some of the folks on here bothered to order one. One person actually said "they wouldn't hang their rep on this guitar"..."its not your go to live guitar". Wow. I'm willing to bet that your cover band won't be able to tell the difference amigo. Like a lot of folks on here (I'm willing to bet) I am a touring musician and have been on the road with several successful bands over the last 20yrs. I can say that my "go to" guitar that I "stake my rep on" is actually a Mexican Telecaster that cost me around $200 when I was a kid....granted I play it through a 1967 AC30. I've got American Teles that back it up! I'm not trying to be a jerk....but ANY guitar can make beautiful noise in the hands of the right person. If your strings buzz at certain frets, take the guitar to a tech OR learn how to correct these problems yourself (it will come in way more handy than the "perfect" guitar). Today you're going to be hard pressed to find a perfect guitar OR one that is properly intonated. Get over yourselves and enjoy.

Hi everybody, I'm a newbie and I have been enjoying everybody's comments on these guitars for quite some time. I am one of the ones who is currently in line to receive a GoldTop Tribute 60's from GC online, put my order in back on feb 11 and have been impatiently waiting for them to be supplied from Gibson, I too heard and noticed that Gold Tops are no longer available to be ordered so God willing I can be one of the lucky few that get one of these babies. Had the pleasure of trying out a Goldtop in a local store and I completely agree with all the positive comments, it made me want one even more, loved the dynamic response from the P-90's, it's tone, sooo unique, the look, also unique, the 60's neck didn't feel as thin as I thought, my 77 Standard feels soo much thinner, I suspect that the GT I tried was in fact a 50's but the gentleman in the store assured me it was a 60's even though the SN dated the guitar as being made in 2010 which made me even more suspicious, either way loved it, no matter the thickness of the neck. I guess if I get my 60's I'll be able to tell if indeed it was a 50's or a 60's.

I didn't get that one, if you must know, because the price I got from GC was soo much better than the one at that store, I also wanted to see if the neck from the one I get hopefully is thinner and lastly due to the fact that it had a 4 pc back which I'm hoping I'll be lucky all the way and get one that has fewer than 4 pc of Mahagony in the back.

I promise to share a picture if I get it, supposedly they'll get a shipment in this sunday, hope to have a positive update for you all after the weekend. Always wanted a GoldTop so I am really enjoying the suspense... Will I get one? Stay tuned and in tune y'all

Cheers,
