This is why on the clear evenings I stand in my back yard and jiggle my junk to the sky in a south westerly direction.

Just in case. ;)

Well we better hope they have telescopes more powerful than ours if you hope they will be able to see something that small. [lol]

Beyond this universe is space, perhaps another universe, ours is not the only universe. We may be alone, we may not be alone, there may have been life on other planets that may now be extinct. We know this because many life forms have lived on this planet in the past, and are now extinct. The odds of another life form traveling here is slim, they would have the same challenges we have with deep space travel, but if on the off chance that happens, one thing for sure, they will be much more advanced technologically then we are. For that reason I believe we should perhaps concentrate our efforts of taking care of this planet, so far the only thing we have proved in 60 years of space travel is that earth is the only home we have and we are taking very poor care of it.

Does the universe bend back into itself?...

That was one of the favourite theorems for a rather long while.

One of it's most celebrated enthusiasts, of course, was Dr. Steven Hawking although quite recently I believe he has formed a slightly different viewpoint.

I was watching an incredible science show the other night on one of the documentary or science related channels. They showed enhanced photos of the deepest that they have looked into space and saw that what once was believed to be stars was in fact millions of incredibly distant galaxies with each one of them containing millions of stars.I find it mind boggling trying to comprehend the infinite size of the Universe and the inconceivable number of galaxies in other areas of the growing Universe. With such an incredibly enormous number of solar systems and planets in them,it is probably doubtful that our Earth could be the only planet that supports intelligent life forms. The odds would very likely be in favour of their being other thinking beings somewhere else in the Universe.

Here's the deal. Matter is made up of atoms - nucleus in the center containing protons and neutrons, electrons orbiting around them. Remind you of anything? Our sun would be the nucleus, earth and other planets the electrons orbiting around it. Electrons represent the least mass of any of the atoms components. We are like tiny little specs on a tiny little electron. Groups of solar systems and galaxies might make up the equivalent of one cell of some type of matter. We are so infinitely small that there is not likely anything else this small that has a mind of it's own and plays Les Pauls to amuse themselves.

So the answer is no there is nothing like us "out there" anywhere we are too insignificant to be replicated. We just have such high opinions of ourselves. [tongue]

Personally, I think you'd have to be idiotic, to think we're "alone,"

and/or even much above complete stupidity, compared to what other living

creatures may be, on other worlds. Sure, we may be more "advanced" than some,

as well as completely inconsequentual, to other beings. To think otherwise,

is pure hubris, and...as "Spock" would say: "Illogical!" But, that's just my

opinion. And, we all know what they say about opinions. LOL [biggrin]

Hello!

My neighbour is 100% sure that we aren't alone. Actually, - He thinks - that shape-shifting reptilian aliens rule and control our World.

He keeps coming to me telling, this-and-that politician/banker/whoever is a shape-shifter.

Once I got enough and told Him: Why do You assume I am not one of them? He must be racist - He doesn't talks to me anymore...

Cheers... Bence

.....it's probably the delivery of vacuum packed mice that did it. [scared]

... the universe is approximately 1.33 x 10^22 light years in circumference.

The reference to the circumference of the universe, I assume, means the physical universe containing all matter, and space is infinite. This would also assume that physicists are still saying that the big bang was the beginning of the known universe. Certainly, theories of other universes are being tossed around by academians.

I think, while there may be micro organisms out there, the odds of alien beings existing are astronomical. Just because the right elements are present doesn't mean life can exist. Think of our atmosphere... at less than 19.5% oxygen, we die. At more than 23.5% oxygen things have a tendency to ignite. Small window......

Actually space as we know it is not infinite. It exists within the boundaries of our universe. Most scientists will tell you that the big bang was the beginning as we have proof that there was some sort of big bang approximately 13.7 billion years ago. Space is expanding in all directions faster than the speed of light. If you reverse the expansion then all of space comes back to a singularity.

There is the multiverse theory that states that other universes exist outside our own. However, this theory is simply an idea right now because we currently have no evidence to back it up.

I'm sorry but I just gotta challenge that one Tman.

As far as I'm concerned ALL theories are just ideas. Some are based on more facts then others but even with that they are nothing

more than a specialists best guess. And all it takes is one to propose his theory in such a way that the rest all go,,, ya, that's a great

thought. And then all get on board and all of a sudden it's the mainstream theory. Which is still the farthest thing from fact.

These things change all the time. I don't mind hearing these different theories but don't like hearing theories stated with conviction.

There is no way you can substantiate the claim that space is not infinite and say it with such conviction.

But hey,, it's a cool discussion and at least it sounds like most people have enough common sense to not think we are the only intelligent life.

Hell,, I don't even think we are the most intelligent life on this planet let alone any other.
