has a piece of music ever brought a lump to your throat?...

The Maple's Lament by Laurie Lewis never fails to move me. The lyric is moving in and of itself but Lewis's clear voice against the haunting notes drawn on the fiddle is a chilling combination. Sorry there's no vid posted but the mp3's available here.

Sometimes the old "Minstrel Boy" does get to me. And it's centuries old.

I know it's cornball in ways, but when the mood's right, I've sung it as a reenactor of soldiers in an era it would have been recognized... The melody is choice, it plays well fingerstyle on guitar, sung a capella or simply recited. Oddly it works well in US 1860s "CW" camps of both sides, as both sides might identify with the warrior bard.

The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone

in the rank of death you'll find him

His father's sword he has girded on

and his wild harp slung behind him

"Land of Song" said the warrior bard

"Though all the world betrays thee,

one sword at least thy rights shall guard,

one faithful harp shall praise thee"

The Minstrel fell but the foeman's chain

could not bring his proud sail under

The Harp he loved ne'er spoke again

for he tore it's chords asunder

And said "No chains shall sully thee,

Thou soul of love and bravery.

Thy songs were made for the pure and the free,

They shall never sound in slavery"

The Passion According to St. Matthew and Jesus Joy of Men's Desire.

One because it saddens em, the other because it fills me with joy.

It takes Bach.

Also, the Mexican National Anthem, specially before a soccer match.

I feel like a traitor for converting, and it just fills me with rage. I lose it.

Then, there is the love song that reminds me of her.

Change the station fast enough or I'll start getting misty-eyed.

"Amazing Grace" on Bagpipes will do it, everytime....(My Scotch-Irish blood, I guess?)

"God Only Knows" The Beach Boys

"Tears in Heaven" Eric Clapton...

"Wind Beneath My Wings" Better Midler

And, So many others...

Actually, any great piece of music, played (and/or sung) with real passion and expertise,

CAN (and often does) do that, to me.

Here Today by Paul Mccartney. Written as kind of an open letter to John after his murder.

The last verse goes;

And if I say I really loved you and was glad you came along

Then you were here today

For you were in my song

Here Today

He did it live when I saw him back in August at Fenway Park and barely made it through that last line.

"In My Life" is another "Beatles" song, that can do that, too.

Lennon's "Beautiful Boy," from Double Fantasy... (I always loved the line: "Life is what

happens to you, while your busy making other plans!")

I also remember a "live" version, of "Wonderful Tonight," where EC did a second solo...starting with

one really elongated/sustained bent note...that just sent shivers down the spine, and a tear to one's eye. I

absolutely LOVE IT, when that happens.
