Silenced Fred Posted June 12, 2010 Share Posted June 12, 2010 Now before people get all over my case, I am on a limited budget (saving up this summer), and want a good semi hollowbody sound. So the two options: Casino: P90s, I hate the headstock though. I can't get over that. Sheraton: I feel the build quality is higher, feels more substantial, and I would swap out the pickups. Hopefully looking for one used, around 300 dollars, with my projected mods (P90 in the neck, seymour duncan jazz or alnico slash in the bridge) would be pretty versatile. Any recommendations? duane v Posted June 12, 2010 Share Posted June 12, 2010 Casino is a hollow-body, the Sheraton is a semi hollow body which is why the Sheri feels more substantial. pohatu771 Posted June 12, 2010 Share Posted June 12, 2010 I'm quite fond of my Casino. I've only played a few Sheratons. The main difference between the Sheraton and Dot, other than cosmetics, is the neck profile. I don't know which is which, but one is thicker than the other. You may want to investigate that, although it does give you the headstock you dislike. A used Dot will be much cheaper than a used Sheraton, however. The Casino has a very thin neck. It's thinner than any of my other guitars. The closest match is my Spirit or LG-0, which are both slightly smaller than a Fender C-neck. They're very different guitars. I'd like to add a Sheraton or Dot to my collection at some point soon. Don't rule out the Lucille, either... it's slightly different, but may be what you want. I've never played one. So why not save for a guitar that he will have forever? You don't know sh¡t. I have no plans of selling any of my guitars. Yes, I would like to get a 339, but I want a P90 guitar. I wouldn't get a 339 to mod. The 339 is a superb model, my favorite that Gibson is putting out right now. Duane- would the Sheraton, being only semi hollow, solve some of the feedback issues people complain about? Or would it be right about the same? charlie brown Posted June 12, 2010 Share Posted June 12, 2010 I have both ('66 Casino, and a AIUSA Sheraton), and they are very different guitars! Both, are excellent, by the way. But, they have very different tones, and characteristics. If you want a P-90 guitar, but "Semi-hollow" body, I suggest a Riviera P-93! Best of both worlds...less feedback (semi-hollow with sustain block, like the Sheraton), and 3 P-90's that give you Casino like tones, as well as even some "Gretsch like," twang. Also, it has the same upper fret access as the Sheraton. A Casino, is limited, that way. But, both Casino and Sherataon's are wonderful guitars. It just depends on what you prefer. Gibson4life Posted June 12, 2010 Share Posted June 12, 2010 I agree with CB. The Casino and Sheraton are completely different beasts and I suggest you play them both. I, however having owned both, prefer the Casino because the tone and growl of the P-90's are something I look for in a guitar. But, you shouldn't rule out other models such as the Dot, Lucille, and the Rivera P-93 as others said before. Unless you give up playing the guitar altogether, you're going to go through a lot of guitars in your life. I had a Strat I loved and swore I would never get rid of it. I ran into some hard times and it ended up in the pawnshop. I had every intention of getting her back, however the hard times lasted longer than I expect and she is with somebody else now. I'm leaning towards the Sheraton, I'm gonna throw in a P94 in the neck, and a Alnico Pro in the bridge. Looking used, around me, a Korean made Sheraton is around 400 with a case, usually less.
