How many have modified their guitars.

I've modified my little junior with a Mean 90, tuners, badass style bridge, paint job, new knobs, and my very own "strap locks"

I'm looking forward to upgrade to a tusq nut to complete the package.

Also, i'm upgrading my special 2... making into a "junior"

GFS Fat Pat

new tuners

I don`t do too many mods. I like to keep most of my guitars stock. My 1968 SG had a DiMarzio super distortion put in as soon as they came out. I put the green Kluson tuners on my 1965 Olympic, and a Bad *** bridge. My 1965 Coronet is heavily modified. A Di Marzio super distortion, brass nut and a JB Player dive bomber tremelo. Everything else is just standard.

Good Gawd.

Epi Custom: Straplocks. New Pickups. Bone Nut. TonePros Bridge and Sperzel Locking Tuners En Route. After the last mod, there will be nothing left except for the pots which I am hesitant to change since they are tapered for a left-handed player.

Epi Standard: No mods (well, it came with straplocks and locking tuners), but a ton of tests. Over the past 2 days, I have tried every possible combination with 2 sets of standard Epi pickups (HOTCH in both bridge and neck, 57CH in bridge and neck, 57CH in bridge with HOTCH in neck, and choosing between the two sets which pickups put out the best performance.) Interesting tests.

'68 Reissue Strat: Originally modded with Seymour Duncans (hot rail bridge position, texas tone in neck) 10 years ago. Since then, it's been refretted with jumbo frets, and has been "retro-graded" with signed Abigail Ybarra vintage '69 pups.

Fender HWY 1: Originally installed a hot rail and JB Jr. in that guitar. Dumped them back to the stock Alcino III's after failing to capture a good sound on some recording sessions. Also changed the pup covers and pickguard to black. Off white pickguard and covers went to the '68.

Gibson Les Paul Studio: Straplocks, and a new pickguard is on the way!

Squier J-Bass: I reversed the nut and the intonation for a left handed player.

Why am I confessing all of this?

I have no idea....

All get straplocks. Otherwise only my Epi LP Standard Plus got upgraded. DiMarzio Virtual Pups, Gibson Pots and Switches. I'm thinking seriously about upgrading one of my Elitist LPs, though. I bought it secondhand and I've been thinking it might not have the original pups in it. Anyway, no sense in having two (have a GT Elitist as well)...So I'm thinking about putting some new pups in it along with rewiring to Jimmy Page style. Just having to decide what pups I want to put in. Then there's this Dot Studio that I have. Can't decide if I want to upgrade all the hardware or just by a 335 and be done with it...

Everything gets straplocks the day I bring it home, I've modified several, but either sold or traded most of those.

The only mods on my current "harem" are:

My Tele, has a Hot noiseless Kent Armstrong bridge p'up, and self installed Bigsby.

And through the years, my GLP has had many mods, dimarzio p'ups, single tapped origional p'ups, speedknobs, but now, its back to all origional, factory spec.GarysCam046.jpg

I almost always change out pickups, pots, and tuners. I've had several that I never modified: either I didn't have them long enougn or they had more value as original ('63 Gretsch, '67 Ric).

That's why I like Gibsons and Epiphones: there is such a variety of pickups available that it's easy make a good guitar a killer.

Natural Casino Mods:

1. Pickups rewound by Lindy Fralin. This made a huge difference... much more controllable when distorted.

2. Gotoh tuners. The tuners it came with were ok but felt sorta loosey goosey.

3. Strap locks. I am a spaz so I need them!

4. I bought it used and it was missing the pickguard! So, is that a mod?

Black Casino Mods:

1. Kent Armstrong pickups. Eh... they don't fit right on the body. Huge gaps. I thought these were made specifically for casino's? Worst of all... no difference that I can tell between these and stock. I am having the stock pickups rewound by Lindy Fralin, they'll fit, and sound better.

2. Earvana nut. Solves the out of tune G thing that can happen, but hardly necessary.

3. Gotoh Tuners. These just feel so much better!

4. Strap locks!

5. Pickguard removed!

Cherry Dot:

1. Earvana Nut. Big help on this guitar. Changed the tone for the better.

2. Aluminum stop tailpiece. I read an article that said to change this and the bridge, so I did. It does sound a lot better.

3. Tone Pros Bridge... seems much nicer.

4. Seymour Duncan jazz humbucker in neck, pearly gates in bridge... huge difference, although I may either go with 57 classics or the Seymour Duncan 59's. The pickups are just a little too hot and edgy for me.

5. Pickguard removed.

6. Straplocks.

All in all the dot changed the most. It's a cool guitar but I just love the way the Casino's feel. Oddly enough both are Korean, but the natural just feels a bit better somehow.

One day I'll get an elitst.

All my guitars are homebuilts or modded except the Gibby. Still working up the nerve...

Yup..i'm the same way..I'm constantly modding and improving my EPis and my homemade LP types, but if

I had a Gibson (which I don't), I probably would be content to leave it just as it is....after all...how can

you improve a product that has been perfected by the "greatest guitar factory in the world".

Sure, you can put a set of Gibson Burstbuckers on it..or some fancy SDs..

....but the actual guitar and it's construction stands on it's own.

My Gibson LP and my Epi Gold Top are stock and will stay that way. On my Epi Lp custom flametop, I changed out the pups to SD Pearlies, and changed the bridge and pickguard. The bridge is a Ghoto. I changed the pickguard and toggle plate to cream to match the binding on the guitar.

OK...seriously....

In light of how this forum is comprised of a bunch of gearheads....I'm beginning to wonder if this question on this forum would be akin to walking into a bar and asking "Hey' date=' how many of you have drank a beer?"[/quote']

I agree. I have modded all mine, but there are probably some members here that haven't. I like to mod my guitars to give them a more personal affect. Same reason I modded my Valve Junior. I also like to do it because I'm just a modder at heart, I have to mod about everything I own except like my stereo and TV.

LOL! Well, yeah...I haven't modded ALL my guitars, but some. It's usually just little stuff, to personalize it, a bit....or, in some cases changing pickups, or hardware to "better" but still original looking. I the case of some "used" stuff, I've purchased, I've modded them BACK to original spec's, in lot's of cases...because although of sound structure, they were in pretty sad shape, othewise. So, in those (2) cases I had a luthier "restore" them, to original specs/condition. It's nice, to restore a guitar, that had been otherwise abandoned, or mistreated.

2003 MIK left-handed Casino with straplocks, Graph Tech string saver saddles, 6" trapeze tailpiece and a new lefty wiring harness with CTS pots that I've either got to summon the courage to try to install or (more likely) have someone else do it. Thanks John Ashfield for telling of your experience with Casino aftermarket pickups; the Lollar rewinds are tempting!
