Female Singers

Rocky4

Recommended Posts

I had my old iPod Mini hooked up at work last weekend and a co worker gave me a shot about the fact that I listen to a lot of bands with female singers. i think he was challenging my manhood. I love a good female rock singer. I think their is more emotion in a female voice.

Let's give it up for......

Ann Wilson

Bonnie Raitt

Kim Deal

Kristen Hirsh

Grace Slick

Joss Stone

Christina Aguilera

Xene Cervenka

Joni Mitchell

Kate Bush

Maddy Moneypenny

Maia Sharp

Nika Costa

P J Harvey

Martha Davis

etc.......

I'll see your Ann Wilson and Martha Davis (GOOD one!) and raise you one Pat Benatar.

Her early albums ROCKED with her hubby Neil on guitar.

[thumbup]

Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty hit paydirt with Stop Draggin' My Heart Around.

Shame there wasn't more from that...

I had to go look, but Melissa Etheridge hit the bullseye with Somebody Bring Me Some Water.

Downhill from there.

Always like Sheryl Crow's Favorite Mistake - really Stonesy sounding in the intro.

Beyond that, eh.....

[unsure]

Baby Animals was a band outta New Zealand if I recall.

Early/mid nineties.

Suze DeMarchi did vocals and guitar.

SMOKING HOT live show.

First album is the best - with One Word on it.

Seems like she married Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme.

Crimes Of Passion is one of my favorite albums. I remember the first time I heard Somebody Bring Me Some Water, I thought it was Steve Marriott

Rightly or wrongly Rock has many more male participants

Than female

Partly due to the style and ethos of the music

Country and Country/Rock is an easier route to success for a female

And some of the early Blues pioneers were women

Jazz has never been short of great female vocalists

Recently there is a trend for Classical/Operatic female singers

To 'go pop' for fame and fortune

There are some great male vocalists who can hit the highs like

Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Sting

And falsetto harmonies from Beach Boys, Beatles etc to satisfy the

High register in an arrangement

It's great to hear variety.....

On a personal view of this thread I would rather work with a female singer than a guy for a few reasons.

1: A female vocalist would be a huge benefit just because its simple (and sexiest sorry) more guys go to see bands live.

2: In my experience most ladies can cover more material, and are not afraid to sing male tunes; how many guys will sing chick tunes? I have yet to meet a guy willing to do that.

3: I have yet to meet a male who can cover Zep tunes, even Plant can't hit his own notes live; but a woman (like Ann Wilson) can do it with no problems.

4: I would much rather look a woman's backside for 4 hours a night than a dude..............

Glad to see Ann Wilson there but what about Nancy Wilson. One of my person favs is Melissa Ethridge.

I've worked with female singers in one of my bands for years. There are some advantages and I do like the dynamics of playing lead guitar to a females vocals. But, you end up having to deal with drama, erratic moods, diva syndrome etc. It's been just about a year since I've played any shows with this band, and I must say it's been a nice break from the drama.

Yeah, I wasn't gonna go there...

I don't want MY WIFE in a band with me, and every other woman gets in line behind her...

I really like the voice of the singer from the Cowboy Junkies.

Yeah, Margo Timmons.

Reminds me of another one.

Limited range, and did music I was only slightly interested in, but liked her voice - Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs.

Oh, I see CJLandry already got her in here.
