  1. I moved in with my wife 20 years ago and rented out my place in California. We were paying about $6,000 in property taxes every year on the California property. We finally decided to sell the California place. (Nice not to have to pay that property tax every year!) Of course, it was worth a lot more now than it was when I acquired it. All of that increase is capital gains. Capital gains are taxed at 15% for the feds, and California wants another 12%. That's 27% right off the top! So we worked a "1031 Exchange." If you take the money from the sale and put it into another rental, that shields whatever money you put into the new rental from capital gains tax. Otherwise we would have had to pay upwards of $400,000! As it was, we didn't put all the sales money into a new rental and still had to pay six figures in capital gains tax. I really hated writing out that check, especially when the president of the country apparently doesn't pay any tax.....
  2. Totally! Major congrats! I love my SW-12, too!
  3. Wow! Heck of a first Gibson! Well done and major congrats!
  4. I usually just check "new posts." Where is that now?
  5. I like the flamed trans amber, myself. Of course, they don't make that finish anymore. I guess antique something-or-other comes close....
  6. I'd like to put up an SJ-200 against my F-50R.
  7. Major congrats! Couple years ago I had Music Villa let me know when Gibson popped out a burst J-15. Just as that happened, a New Hartford-built jumbo burst Guild F-50R came up on reverb, which I nabbed after the seller accepted my offer. Funny how one's guitar acquisition goals can change in unexpected ways!

Something very fortuitous going on here! When the moon is in the Seventh House And Jupiter aligns with Mars Then peace will guide the planets And love will steer the stars This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius....
  10. No expert on the topic here. Last time I played with others was a few years ago when I sat in with a group down at the Bayou club in town. They had an old vintage Wurlitzer electric piano that I played - some uptempo 12-bar blues. I was surprised when the crowd went crazy! I guess I nailed my solo, LOL! Anyway, playing with other guitarists is one thing; playing with a keyboardist is entirely different. You're generally on equal footing with other guitarists. But you can be way overpowered by a piano unless the player lays back and gives you some sonic space. A lot depends on how the guy plays. The only tip I've got is: Have Fun. That's the whole idea anyway. An old buddy of mine kept sending me his guitar recordings. He's kind of a beginner. I liked one of them and decided to add an improvised keyboard part. So here's an example of a guitar-keyboard combo.
  11. Hey FZ, Congrats on your JF-30! I've found Guild jumbos to be in the same league as Gibson's SJ200. They're just excellent guitars. Guild serial numbering is generally too messed up for me to make any sense of it. I just rely on the guys over on letstalkguild.com to decode serial numbers. I expect you're right about the "93" though.

  12. I bought a ES335 copy from them, with case - super cheap. Grain figuring was stunning. Pots were cheap. Later sold it. Kept the case. :^)
  13. Good lookin'! Congrats!
  14. Congrats! Would love to see photos! I think it'll fit in a standard dreadnought case. Welcome to the boards!
  15. Well done! Gibson's J-15 really blew everybody away. Who knew a walnut-backed guitar could sound so good? And, well, I'm partial to abalone rosettes. I'd guess no upgrades needed. All it might need is a setup, but that's only if the action is hard. I doubt low humidity is a problem in Hawaii. I think you're good to go. Welcome to the boards!
  16. They'd both probably be fine. IIRC, it was the early 70s that was kind of a low point in guitar production.
  17. I've got Guild 12s out of Westerly and Corona and a Gibson 12 out of Bozeman, and I'm still intrigued by those F1512s. For traveling, maybe.... even though I've got an old 1970s Epiphone 12 that works quite well for traveling. Just.... crazy, I guess.
  18. Yeah! I can't imagine getting an SJ-200 with a cutaway. Seems sacrilegious! If you're playing way up there, you're ignoring over half the guitar!
  19. Yeah, I happened to hear that in a restaurant the other day and couldn't get it out of my head... in a good way! Really like that song!
  20. Amie - Pure Prairie League! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4mCiYQeU_s
  21. Yeah, sorry this never got answered. As far as I know, when there's a strip of tape over the original serial number, that means it's a refurbished guitar, which means there was some flaw in its production, big or small, that was identified at the factory, so the guitar was sold wholesale to a refurbishing company, usually MIRC, who looks it over and tries to fix whatever might need fixing. Their s/n numbering system is completely different from Epiphone's, so that's why you're getting "mixed signals." So that guitar was made in China, but you're unlikely to be able to find out much more about it, other than that's a "refurb."
  22. I can't help with your questions, but you are indeed a lucky man to have that RAVS! They're pretty rare these days. I've had several EF500 Masterbilts, and the RAVS was the last to go.... to fund other guitars, of course. Great little guitar!
