What made you buy a Gibson?

For me, it was the sound. I never really go by the name on the headstock, I played one, and I fell in love. I really like the ability to turn down the volume on one of the pickups, have one cranked, and its almost like having an overdrive pedal. I played Strats and I like em, still want one, but I think the LP suits me a bit better.

I like flatter fretboards.

The Fender shorter radius makes it difficult to do extreme sting bends.

I like the sound of P90 pickups.

I have an Epiphone and a modded ESP/LTD with P90s that I like just as much.

I'd love a strat if I could get one with a 14" neck radius, as I like their looks and their sound too.

Well, I was originally going to get a Fender Strat, a buddy of mine, a drummer, his guitarist brother had told him about Gibson, the brother played PRS

So he told me, I checked out Gibson on wiki and all their models and then I searched bands who used them and vids and all that stuff and I liked the sounds and looks and all.

At that point, the name didn't mean sh*t....

It was the sound

I've loved Gibson guitars since I was young and especially with first seeing Tony Iommi with an SG, then Jimmy Page with his Gold Top Les Paul, and of course the icing on the cake for me was Peter Frampton's Black Beauty Les Paul.

But my first (hopefully with many more to come) ownership of a Gibson came late but better than never, just a couple of weeks ago with a beautiful SG 61 Reissue. I have to say that what attracted me in the first place was the looks of it but when I plugged it into my Marshall, the tone just totally blew my mind. It also surprised me with how much grunt this guitar has. This guitar was meant to be played loud, that's for sure!

Although my first real good quality guitar was a Fender American Standard Stratocaster (which I still have) takes pride of place in my collection (albeit only two guitars so far), but the SG has so much more grunt and that wonderful, unmistakable Gibson tone. I'm really lucky that so far I have two awesome guitars. Naturally I hope to get the "Holy Grail" of guitars one day....a GIBSON LES PAUL. I'll have to save my pennies, but in the meantime I'm really enjoying the SG.

I had an Epiphone Les Paul, when I tried a Gibson Les Paul I was hooked even though it was a lowly Vintage Mahogany. I did not go by the brand itslef but rather by what what behind it. I had always been a Fender fan because when I grew up those guitars were highly regarded, Gibsons were too expensive to be affordable when I grew up.

Growing up in the 80's I always wanted an Explorer so that was my second Gibson. I love it.

Well, as a young lad I couldn't stay up very late but I really wanted to watch this new band, The Beatles, on their first American television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. My parents watched it every week so I quietly watched the Black and White images on our television from the top of the stairs. What does this have to do with me wanting to buy a Gibson? This. I loved to guitar John was playing. All I could remember were the 2 "horns" on either side of his Rickenbaker necks. By the time Dad and I went to the music store I saw what turned out to be a Gibson SG with 2 humbuckers and said, that's the one. Perhaps the most auspicious mistake in my life. More than 40 years later I still have it and will never part with it. Nice inheritance for the kids, huh? BTW, I bought the Model 350 a few years later.

Mine was a gift from an old friend. I'd always been a Fender girl, mostly Strats. Friend is a HUGE Gibbomaniac and decided that he would find a Gibson I liked! Noticed all my electrics were single coils, so he sent me a used 2000 R4 Custom. I plugged it into a Bassman head w/2x12 cab (Marshall 1936?) and I was gone...it's nice to have friends.

Thinking about an SG w/P-90s. :(

When I was younger, I always loved the look and feel of Gibson's. Then when I was 14 years old, after 6 years of playing, I had saving up $1500. So I went to my local store and tried out EVERY guitar in the store, and I got my first Gibson, a Gibson Les Paul Studio, my 2nd guitar. And the rest.........is history. :(

I went to guitar center looking for my first electric. I seemed to like the exotic shapes of the BC Rich guitars, but based on the price my dad kinda had a gut feeling that it was junk, and had me look for another one. I ended up coming home with an Epiphone SG 400, and from that day forward, I knew i would some day buy a Gibson SG. I bought my standard about 4 months ago.

In the late '60s, I had access to a couple of electrics (Hagstrom, Gretsch) that belonged to friends but lived in the basement of my folks house (along with Standel, Ampeg and a couple of Fender amps). I started on a job where I worked rotating shifts. Plugging in at 02:00am usually brought the "wrath of G-d" down on me for all the noise. I decided to get an acoustic, played a few and decided I wanted a 12 string (Gordon Lightfoot?). Played a b45-12 in Manny's or Terminal Music, liked it a lot. Had a chance to get a used Martin from a college buddy, but I couldn't seem to get used to the neck. Went to a local M&P shop played a Guild f212, a b45-12 and an lg-12, all about the same price. I was told that the b45-12 was "on hold". Choice came to the Guild and the lg-12. I liked the lg-12, sound and feel, and bought it. Still have it, still love it.

Deja' Vu? A few months ago, my son and I went up to Lark Street music, they had a 1967 Guild f212 and a B45-12 from the same era. The wanted $1000 for the B45-12 and twice that for the Guild. If I had the money for either I still would have bought the Gibson (clearer and stronger sound).
