First new computer

Recommended Posts

First new computer I ever bought.

Dell Studio 17 laptop.

ICore 5, etc...

Badass piece of electronic wizardry.

I'm a little behind the times with all this new-fangled technology stuff.

No tubes in it, and it doesn't cover my entire metal desk from the 1950s.

Lots to learn.

I predict that this whole computer thing might catch on after all....

Hah!

Yeah, Windows 7 - whatever that is....

:-

I'll admit, I've been slow to "need" new technology through the years.

I tell people I'm the original stone-tablet-and-chisel kind of guy.

Tube amps, passive pickups, no effects pedals, natural breasts and minimal makeup.

I bought my first VCR in 1997, 15 years after they hit the market.

The only reason?

I had just installed a DirecTV satellite on my house, and worked shifts.

The only way I would ever get to see the cool stuff was to record it.

People would mention recording TV shows and I would say I didn't have a VCR.

They gave me a stunned look like I didn't have indoor plumbing or something....

(Hey I was pretty quick to go from vinyl to compact discs in the late 80s.)

I always used girlfriend's computers for stuff I couldn't do at work, and was told

what would happen if I looked at nekkid chicks on either one.

Plenty of technology on the job, I had no desire to bring that sh!t home.

Especially if I was paying for it....

Finally, in 2006 my company was told by corporate HQ that they had to scrap all

their Dells and get in the company groove with a fleet of IBMs.

They raffled off all the new/old Dell computers (including laptops) to employees

and I snagged a state-of-the-art Dell Optiplex GX260, a flat screen, killer speakers,

and a HP Deskjet printer.

Free.

Been trouble-free for four years with tons of use.

Not a bad deal.

Recently I started taking college courses again and the need for a laptop finally

became apparent, so I consulted all my nuclear Alpha-geek buddies for advice.

Also changed cell phones from Verizon to Virgin, got a camera - and a keypad for texts!

Also bought a Casio scientific calculator with 2-line display.

More technology in a week than I figured I'd own in a lifetime.

Oh, and TG, Mrs. Neo is exactly the same.

Gee-whiz/"Ooooh! Look at THAT!!!" technology does nothing for her.

I've tried for five years to buy her a new vacuum cleaner...

Cool Neo.

I'm more of a Mac guy but the only things I would use a computer for are recording and listening to music. And perusing the forum of course.

Yeah, Macs are great for what they do. I love 'em and don't think I will ever go back to the dark side. The largest shareholder of Apple other than the company? Bill Gates does, think about that

The you too can do the upgrade free to XP Pro if the new machine came with Win7

The alpha geeks are working on it for me.

I have no business installing software.

At the old job I was known as the IT Assassin.

I could wreck entire systems just opening my email.

So besides his penchant for tube amps Neo still has natural breast and wears very little makeup. Ok

Damn Neo, I feel for ya. I just got my first cell phone yeterday. The wife had one we used, so I never really wanted one. I actually LIKE to be out of reach when I go to my hunting cabin. Anyhoo, just a phone/camera, not into texting.

My next step is high speed and a new fangled solid state computer like Neo.......

I've got a Dell vostro 17" laptop. I've had it a couple of years now. I'd recommend anyone to have one. Customer service has been first rate.

But since I've had my iphone I use it less and less. I find the iphone the best bit of kit I've had. My son's just had a iphone 4 and it's better. But not a great leap. The screen's the biggest difference.

You should have taken it into the Apple store, they give you a 1 year warranty.

I must admit that it took my a long time to really get into the technology gizmos. I just got a cell phone last year! I still hate computers to this day though. I'm more of a paper and pencil type of guy. But lately I'm starting to see the fun in these gizmos. However, I'll never be a fanatic about them.

My biggest issue with computers is that I strongly believe that they dull the mind. I teach a senior level course in Spacecraft Dynamics & Control. It's a highly mathematical course. The students do a pretty good job with the computer projects but most of them couldn't think beyond their noses. The students are great number crunchers but they lack critical thinking capabilities. Working with paper and pencil MAKES you think. Having the computer solve the problem for you makes Jack a dull boy...
