Murph Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Usually it's just a slight ringing. A minute ago, I swear it was an (old time) dial tone.........
Hall Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Understood. I live with the sound of a boiler on ready 24 hrs a day.
Hall Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Have you seen a doctor ? Don't know about Murph, but I certainly have done so. Not much that can be done.
MorrisrownSal Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 sometimes allergy medicine helps me... For those that dont relate... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoPidoFqvsU
kwalker201 Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 That slight ringing is non stop with me. It sucks
kelly campbell Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 That slight ringing is non stop with me. It sucks Same here and yes it does suck and sometimes like Murph said out of nowhere it booms loudly
Versatile Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 No laughing matter.... Can be linked to high blood pressure and other issues Not just loud electric guitar players either... Violinists and Scottish bagpipers can be prone Often guilt kicks in...at being naughty in one's youth: going to loud rock concerts and turning headphones up too loud <_< Motorcyclists, machine operators, airport technicians, riflemen et al Can all suffer V

I've put my bike up for sale, time to hang it up.
Smurfbird Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I've had it since age 13! Mild concussion started the right ear and 'fluid' in the middle ear helped kick it in on the left ear. I've had it so bad that I couldn't hear anybody over it. Often stress makes it worse. I'd recommend getting a white noise machine for sleeping and also for those moments when the house is too quiet. Allergy meds have helped me a bit. But mostly I avoid loud noises and music and try to relax. But it sucks and I'm sorry for everyone who has to suffer with it. It ended my electric band days back in my 20s.
Smurfbird Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Anyone else notice their Tinnitus getting worse after having the wax cleaned out of their ears? It may be psychosomatic but I swear whenever I've had a doctor clean out my ears with those metal tongs, My tinnitus gets worse within a week. Now I make them flush out the wax with water and I haven't noticed any issues.
L8_4thesh0w Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Mine always sounds like crickets recorded at 33,1/3 and played back at 78 rpm. Some reports have cited long term use of painkillers as a causative factor. There's really not much anyone can do for it as yet. Hopefully, modern research will find an effective remedy. They are currently experimenting with an electronic nerve therapy which cancels out the offending frequencies. Has anyone tried the Lipo-Flavinoid I've seen advertised? It's kinda pricey, especially if it won't do the job.
duluthdan Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Nothing slight about it. Ruined mine producing stadium arena rock shows in the early 70s. Made enough dough to pay for college and then some, but paying the price now.

I don't know about tinnitus, but it destroys that range of your hearing. And, the second killer - gunshots without good ear protection. Wish someone had warned me when I was younger. Maybe they did - and I didn't hear them.
58 Relic Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 I suffer from a similar problem but only in my right ear and I swear blind it was due to a good few years standing on stage next to a loud drummer with a Black Beauty snare drum . Now I use ear protection if I ever play with a full band ( thankfully very rarely)
duluthdan Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Has anyone tried the Lipo-Flavinoid I've seen advertised? It's kinda pricey, especially if it won't do the job. Took it for 2 years, and nada, nothing, zip, no improvement.
songman Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Have you seen a doctor ? This! And if the first doctor you see cannot help you go to a second one. I once had a case of phantom noises in my ear. It was the third doctor that I saw that helped me get rid of it.
Murph Posted August 12, 2016 Author Posted August 12, 2016 Mine's actually very slight, and seems to come and go. It's barely noticeable considering 35+ years of bar gigs, many of those (probably a decade) with a Marshall half stack. I truly believe it's not so much the gigs that caused the most damage, but the living room "circles" practicing and such. We did 4 months of this in 1998 putting together the Double Aught c.d. Anyhow, I was kind of joking about the dial tone.... And no, I'm not going to a Doctor ! Whoops, I gotta go, somebody left a phone off the hook.........
Smurfbird Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Songman, What did the third doctor do that got rid of the tinnitus? Every specialist I've ever consulted has only suggested ways to make it more bearable -- and then suggested avoiding caffeine, chocolate, alcohol...and yet I've never noticed the ringing to get better or worse when cutting these things out and then trying a little bit. Sometimes I think a sudden change in weather -- barometric pressure -- can kick it off.

Sometimes I think a sudden change in weather -- barometric pressure -- can kick it off. Careful! I did not have tinitus, I had phantom sounds, that means that most sounds I heard would be accompanied by a nonexistent rumbling extra sound. If a tap was running I would perceive also the sound of a boiling water can, things like that. I remember two medications I had to take: prednisolon and something to increase the bloodstream to the tiniest blood vessels. PLEASE, DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A SUGGESTION YOU DO THE SAME. See another doctor.
Tman Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I have bad tinnitus that became bad when I started statins. Rather be alive with tinnitus than the alternative.
Johnny 6 String Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 Usually it's just a slight ringing. A minute ago, I swear it was an (old time) dial tone......... What, what was that?? Your gonna have to speak up.....buzzing ringing in my ears is so loud it keeps the wife up at night. I forget what life's like with out it. One of these days the good ol'docs will find a fix....I hope
Fullmental Alpinist Posted August 13, 2016 Posted August 13, 2016 I'm surprised by the number of youse that suffer from this. But considering your backgrounds it makes sense. I'm hoping Tom B. will weigh in here.... I'd like to hear what he knows about this.(Or at least he can show us some more vintage guitar pictures. )
