Oh MAN, I love that.

I must confess, I'm not a big ES-335 fan.
But that is one gorgeous guitar.

And the P90's make it special and head-turning to me.
😍

I think this is even better than a 335..  They dont make many 336's at all...

Man I shouldnt have posted on here.. Its making me want it more damn it.. Been watching it for about two weeks sorta hoping someone else would buy it.. Its still there though.. Even the price is not bad at £2845...  Damn it.. I know I dont need it at all.. But man I want it 🙂  Apparently its a Made 2 Measure so not even an off the shelf guitar. Damn it..

Surely its an investment..  Right...  Riiigghhhhttttt [blink]

In my search to see if I could find any other similar..  There was a 336 from 2017 that had dog ear P90s.. Didnt look quite as good IMO...  Then I found this one...

Let me tell you.. If it had still been for sale I would have bought it in a heartbeat  😄

That's not cheap but considering how little interest money earns in any investment account these days....I see guitars like these as an investment.  I shouldn't make any less in the long term than if my money had been earning the tiny amount of interest banks pay, plus I have daily joy from the guitar itself.

Retrospectively, one of the best things about the HJ era was the amount of short runs, new designs and limited editions.  Consider the 336 above versus some sort of reissue LP.  There are  many, many LP reissue variants over the years, so surely there's no way they can hold their price as well as something like this IMO - there are just so many out there.   And I don't think Gibson will ever be as willing to experiment and produce new models again.

Yes. That is what I am telling myself too 😄  Its just so unusual.. And I dont know that much about investment but I have learned a bit over the last few years.. But yeah, you could put your money in worse places...

My only if.. Is the neck profile.. The person described it as 60s like but flat on the back..  I have had a couple of guitars in the past with slim flat necks which I didnt like so much.. So I am not sure if its just a bad description of a usual 60s neck or its been carved to order as such and is not standard..  And its near Manchester, so, too far to drive and try it out.. Will be taking a slight risk.

I started this in my 50's doing these hand exercises holding each position for a few seconds then start over continuing for about 5 minutes.

Also use Voltaren and once in a while DMSO, including joint health supplements like Glucosamine Chondroitin and MSM.

So far these are helping me maintain a modicum of flexibility at 71. I my case if I don't use it I lose it and need to continually strengthen my fingers through playing and applying correct pressure to each finger without aggravating the joints.

I use Voltaren and Emu spray over top of that. Then rub it all in well, It does seem to help the pain but my hands and fingers are way too greasy to play Lol. I do need to start the stretching again. First thing at work everyday, we had to stretch everything from head to foot and that helped. Since I left, I stoped doing my stretches.

Just finished mowing, but after looking at that 336, I gotta go play my Mean90 powered 339...

Yesterday, I got my Rivera out after a long spell. Recently, I changed the factory strings and set it all up but never played it except for tuning it.  It's a wine red with 3 P-90's in it. I've been playing my Casino Coupe a lot but I hear so much more tone in the Riviera plugged in the tube amp. Of course, Deb wasn't home so I cranked it up Lol.

No its one I am thinking about buying and having internal arguments about  🙂  I really dont need it.  BUT!!!

Well, I have no clue to how many you have? But That is a Gibson I would get if I had the cash for it. Actually I do, but it's all in my 401K & Deb doesn't want me to take that out just yet, "For tax purposes."

I have four at the moment...  One is a 336 with humbuckers...  Which is why I say I dont need it..  But I love my 336 so much the idea of a P90 one is extremely tempting. I can afford it as such..  But that still doesnt mean I should get it..

I'm still deciding if I should keep the Alnico pickups in my Gibson Gold Top or put P-90's in it? I was looking up some today, over $200.00 for both.

I know... The prices of pickups have gone mad.. (well like everything else these days I guess). I am glad I know of good cheaper ones for my builds..

so.. how will you plan to retro fit P90s into the cavities for the humbuckers?

P94s is what you'd probably be looking for.

I always thought that Standard's came with the higher made pickups? Like P-90's, Burst bucker's and such. Are Alnico's the cheaper ones? Thats what's in my Standard G.T.  Same as my Standard Epiphone for $400.00.

P94's?  To tell the truth, I know little about changing them and what fits in what guitar. I have never even opened up the backside of any guitar yet or looked inside the front. All I know is many Gold Tops came with P90's or P94's as you say. My Gold Top Standard has Alnico's in it, same as my Epiphone.

Alnico's are usually referring to the magnets inside the pickups

Regular Humbucker's are not the size as traditional P90s,  They are bigger so the cavity that the pickups go in will be too big for P90s

P94s are the same size as Humbuckers but they are sill "P90s"

Note that MINI Humbuckers are P90 sized humbuckers.   Like you'd see on a  Les Paul Deluxe

so the question is what exactly are you trying to swap out?  (Photos)

No Alnico is the magnet inside.... Usually they are more classic sounding..  You also have ceramic magnet ones like I have in my classic that usually give you more of an aggressive output...  Theres also different alnico magnets i.e.  Alnico 2 and 5...   And actually you can find the same types of pickups in a lot of Gibsons...   The Customs come with custom buckers..... Which I think is more to do with the exact amount of coil winds... You can also easily change the magnets, they slide out.

The way I see it, pickups are not complicated things..  Magnets with wire wrapped around them and a case.. Which is why I dont mind using cheaper pickups... As long as the cheapest crap isnt used to make them (crap magnets and cheap wire) you can get really good cheap ones. I do have a thing for Gibson pickups though.. They are very good, Gibson has their formula down.

I wish I could do photos but I have problems with Imgur letting me in.  Photo bucket used to let me post but that is gone now.

I'm thinking with my lack of skill on changing any out, I will probably take it to a Luthier to do it after we talk some about it.

I was having issues with Imgur..  What I did in the end was leave the Beta page and go back to the old page.. Theres an option for it in the settings somewhere.. Works fine now.

Ok, So I learned something, Thanks. I always thought they were the cheapest and really, I don't know what I have in it. I have done comparison tests on the net and cannot tell the difference between the two. So maybe what I have is alright?

Thanks Rob, When Our son gets time, I'm going to have him help me out with Imgur this year. I would love to post photos here of my guitars.
